I know this sounds kind of americanised, but doesnt the AFL premier also have a right to claim world champion status ???? I think id rather have the title of world champions than "premiers", seeing as aussie rules is played around the world now (although no where near the level its played here of course).
It would look better on all the GF marketing stuff, and make it seem like a bigger achievment.
anyway its just a thought...........

If Australia was the USA the use of World Champions would be a given. In the press in the US even the women's basketball competition winners are called World Champions. Fortunately, Australia isn't the USA so let's keep the World Champion tag to be used for genuine champions of the world who've beaten substantial international opposition to claim the title.

As a footnote, the New York Times New Year edition listed champions in sport for 1999 and under Australian Football were the AFL, SANFL and WAFL premiers and it also showed the World Champions as Papua New Guinea!

This will sound stupid at the start but we should look at having a comp like the FA Cup. Where teams from all over Australia get to play in the knock out comp, teams from SANFL, QFL, WAFL, have the AFL teams seeded 1-16 so they can play off in later rounds if they get thru. I know this could never really happen cause of the amount of days it takes to recover from an AFL game, but it would be interesting.

There's a report about Nauru in afl or age site stating there will be a 'world afl championship' in Melbourne in 2002 ! sounds great.

I'd think in the intersts of competitiveness each team will have a limit on the number of aussies (or AFL, VFL, Sanfl) players etc, so it might be a good spectacle etc.
