Shorten electric car aspirations will surely only influence voters on the cusp of the green/Labor divide, see Toyota who have 18 years in the hybrid car market, dismissing electric power for Australias #1 selling motor vehicle the Toyota Hilux.

Of course virtue signallers all will move to electric vehicles foe photo opportunities, just need someone to put their money where their mouths are - where are we know :https://www.caradvice.com.au/car-news/topic/industry-sales-results/

Interesting too who know where electric trucks are up to: https://www.tandlnews.com.au/2019/02/05/article/electric-trucks-are-the-way-to-go-alc/

If Bills electric car announcement moves one vote I'll be amazed, even allowing for the fake news discussions that surrounded a non - event.

Electric trucks is already happening. I know someone who is managing fleet conversions as we speak for several national name logistics firms.

Motivation is purely financial, it's cheaper to convert and run on batteries for the lifecycle of the vehicle

Roger that in trucking, heard a few anti the suggestion (if one lot is for it, the other lot is against, no investigating or understanding), & to a journo/commentator they had NO idea.
I'm not anti electric cars, just cynical about the why of the aspirational %.

That is a fair point and I do believe that the future can only lie in EVs if the grid also switches to renewables - the carbon emissions aren't reduced by plugging your Tesla into a coal-fired power grid.

Toyota will always stick with and promote hybrids though because they are the leaders in hybrid engines (the Prius gave them the head start over the competition that they have maintained ever since), and naturally this will be reflected in their approach to the Hilux. Besides, the Hilux is top selling because of it's competitive pricing, reputation and durability, so that's not really evidence of hybrids being better.

shouldn't the greens who champion the rights of transgender and gay people be up in arms about Brunei stoning gay people? their silence in not upsetting Muslims is deafening

You can criticise the Greens for a lot of things - loopy lefties, watermelons, hopelessly naive, whatever - but at least they are principled and haven't yet sold out their soul to the highest bidder. A lot of Parliamentarians protested when George W Bush visited the Australian Parliament but Brown and the Greens were the only ones to also have the same level of protests when Hu Jintao visited shortly after as well.

David Leyonhjelm was easily the most principled politician in the country, but he never got credit for it.

Despite being pro marriage equality and pro marijuana legislation, the greens treated him like Pauline Hanson (David and Pauline agree on virtually nothing). Hardly principled.

In any case, you're right that nobody gets respect for having principles. Politics is as tribal as footy, the facts don't matter. The only difference between humans and monkeys, is monkeys haven't figured out how to access internet porn yet.

Boycott Divestment Sanctions the anti Jewish movement which is the darling of the hard left and the Greens.

Being against Israel's settlement policy is not being anti-Jewish. If anything, stopping the Israelis from having millions more Muslims in their territory is more likely to keep it as a Jewish state.

But you knew all this already, and are just being disingenuous so you can take a shot at a party that you don't like.

Ah yes, the man who took $50 000 from the cigarette lobby, formed a voting bloc with Fraser Anning, threw a hissy fit over a Wicked Campers van referring to him derogatorily instead of women, and tried to **** shame someone on national television. Yes, how principled.

Being anti Jewish is offensive full stop, don't dance around it, stand up to it.

or at least be honest about it unlike most of the left.

It's been framed that any questioning of Israeli policy or support for their opposition is anti Semitic. It's clever but stupid.

Promoting the two state solution is now being crafted into anti-Semitism too.

It'd be funny if it wasn't so worrying.
