Ayres' time is up as Crows eye future
By Greg Denham
May 28, 2004
ADELAIDE coach Gary Ayres will be replaced at the end of the season, with Sydney assistant Peter Jonas the front-runner to become the Crows' fifth coach.

In his fifth season with the Crows, Ayres' contract ends in September and he will not be given a third extension.

The Crows are expected to put out feelers to Jonas in the next two months. They are also likely to discuss the senior coaching role with Adelaide assistant Neil Craig and possibly former Western Bulldogs coach Terry Wallace. After three years of final-eight finishes, the Crows are 14th with just two wins from nine rounds.

Ayres fronted an Adelaide board meeting last week and was told by directors that they were not happy with the team's on-field performance.

And following the Crows' three-point loss to Collingwood last Friday night, Ayres again came in for strong criticism from his administration for allowing himself to be miked-up by Channel Nine for a national audience to listen to his quarter-time address.

With Adelaide certain to take a new direction next year with a bigger concentration on youth, the 44-year-old Jonas fits the mould perfectly. It is understood the Adelaide board has become impatient with its ageing list and will demand a new coach with a fresh approach to recruiting and the implementation of a youth policy.

Jonas, who would not comment yesterday when contacted by The Australian, has specialised in player development in recent years.

Sydney coach Paul Roos yesterday said he did not want to buy into any discussion on who would be coaching Adelaide next year.

"Out of respect for Gary Ayres, I don't want to get involved," Roos said.

"He's the coach and anything else is pure speculation."

But it is well known that Roos rates Jonas highly after targeting him specifically as a development coach at the end of 2002.

"We sought him out for this specific role and he's been great," Roos said. "You only have to look at the way some of our kids have come on."

Jonas, who comes out of contract with the Swans at the end of the season, is also Sydney's defensive coach on match days.

Jonas is a highly respected football identity in Adelaide, where he gained All-Australian status as a 19-year-old and represented his state seven times.

As a ruck rover, he played almost 100 games for SANFL club Central District before making a name for himself at North Melbourne in the 1980s despite twice breaking his leg.

In eight mainly injury-prone seasons at Arden Street, he played 82 games and kicked 115 goals from half-forward.

He started his coaching career at Central District in 1998 and won the SANFL premiership two years later.

Jonas followed long-time friend Malcolm Blight to St Kilda as an assistant in 2001, but his association with the Saints ended when Blight was sensationally sacked after round 15.

He and Geelong assistant coach Ken Hinkley declined to remain at Moorabbin without Blight.

Jonas previously played under and alongside Blight at the Kangaroos and was his runner at Adelaide in the Crows' first premiership.

In 2002, Jonas was employed by the SANFL as a development manager, in charge of the state's elite under-18 players.

After a rare year of no senior coaching changes in 2003, at least two will be made before the end of this calendar year.

Following Ayres will be Richmond's Danny Frawley, who comes out of contract this season, and his tenure will not be extended at Punt Road.

Of the other coaches coming off contract this year, Kevin Sheedy will stay at Essendon, Mark Williams is almost certain of being retained beyond 2004 by Port Adelaide, Neale Daniher is set to remain with the rejuvenated Demons and St Kilda's Grant Thomas will next month be reappointed for at least a further three years.

Does anyone have any comments on Jonas as a coach

If that's true then that's disgraceful. I see nothing wrong with Ayres doing that. If Ayres doesn't have a problem with that then the board shouldn't either.

I don't know much about Jonas but this approach sounds promising.

Can anyone give more insight into Jonas' coaching at Centrals?

IMHO, Jonas is a fantastic coach. He has put the foundations down to make Central District the power house that it is now. His results speak for themselves. He is a great development coach. He knows how to get the best out of his players, especially youngsters.

Anyone remember 2001 draft when there was only 2 players drafted from SA and many good football judges said that the young talent in SA footy is "struggling". Jonas came on board and developed some very good youngsters and the following year there we 15 players drafted from SA including Jericho.

I think he has fantastic credentials and if Adelaide is to go for untried coach then O'Donnel and Jonas would be picks of the bunch. I still think AFC will go for coach with senior AFL experience but if we end up with Jonas, I would be happy.

I know one thing for sure, Jerome would be stoked if in fact Jonas was coaching us next year.

BTW, ****, I have a problem with Gary being miked-up in quarter time adress to the players. In this game everyone is looking for an edge. Are you honestly telling me that Mick Malthouse or someone from his staff wouldn't have listened to that and made moves to counter Gary's tactic.

In the QTR time address to the players, Gary said to Hart that he is happy for him to comeup and play a loose man in defence and let his opponnent run of the wing unless that opponent is not Shaw because thats how he likes to play. What does MM do to open up his forward line. He puts Shaw on the wing and Hart goes to man up on him and we all know that things started going downhill in the 2nd quarter.

Thew only reason Gary did it was to put his name out there. He has been all over the media this year. He is certainly making other options available to himself come the end of the year.

Yeah fair enough, I know it does reveal some things but I don't believe Gary Ayres would compromise on field results to help out the media. You only have to see his press conferences to see how little Ayres likes to give away.

It doesn't bother SANFL coaches that anyone including the opposition can hear what they say. Also in the AFL, boundary riders often listen in and then report it to the TV.

As a basketball fan yourself you would also see it happen regularly in that sport in timeouts.

Either way, it should have been discussed prior to the event and I'd be surprised if Trigg didn't know about it and give it the ok.

If Gary did it without any clearance from Trigg then I guess he has a lot to answer for but I can't imagine that would've happened.

As a long time CDFC supporter, I'm not 100% sure Jonas would make a good AFL coach. People tend to look at his 2000 premiership and the fact he was the Dogs first premiership coach and think he is highly credentialled. Truth is though, Jonas can be likened to doing a similar job which Malcolm Blight did with the Crows. Alan Stewart during the mid 90s, set the tone for the CDFC to become a powerhouse in the new millenium, with Jonas reeping the benefits in the 2000 premiership.

He certainly has a way of getting through to younger blokes though, and if that's the road the Crows are looking at taking, then I say "Go for Jonas" with a full head of steam. Although I reckon Terry Wallace could perhaps do an equally good job as Jonas with a youthful squad.

PS: It's kind of ironic that Jonas is being linked with the Crows job. I reckon I recall Jonas being Malcolm Blights runner during the premiership years, and once Jonas was reported to be giving information to players which Malcolm hadn't asked for. Malcolm downplayed the claims, saying "Jonas couldn't coach." 2 years later he was coaching an SANFL premiership side. GOOD 1 BLIGHTY.

Interesting theory - and one espoused on radio this morning by Tim Watson. Ayres has had a fairly low profile in the Melbourne media, and in the last 2 weeks he's been on Talking Footy, the Sunday Footy Show and got himself miked up last Friday night.

I guess everyone puts feelers out when their job security is low so AFL coaches are no different.

****, basketball doesn't have runners like AFL, that can run out and instruct players or make positional moves.

Not holding it against Gary with the appearence on TV and radio shows. I am not happy about miking up tho.

He is welcome to put his name out there and no one can blame him for that. I am pretty sure that everyone would do the same thing.

Good luck to him. He deserves better than what he is copping ATM.

True, but you have a coach screaming his lungs out from the sidelines and the players can hear him.

****, Basketball is a bit different that Footy. IN Footy you have runner that go out and pass the message to a player. In basketball coach is screaming from the sideline. Opposition coach can hear what he is saying. Ususally its not much of tactical crap like "Run a pick and Roll" or "Pass it down to the low Post to Shaq and clear out" Coach often screams to the players about their positioning on defence and rotation on offence.

If a coach wants to pass on a message to the players that he doesn't want the opposition to know, he calls a player to come to the sideline and he tells him what to do and player passes it on to his team mates.

DIfferent sport, different game and in Basketball is not such a big issue as it is in footy.

Agree 100% with all you say.

Telling the opposition coach what your best player in the first term is going to do in the rest of the match is a dumb thing to do.

You must be joking. He has been representiing the club and doing so with dignity.

As if one move made all the difference in the Pies game. Lack of ability was the reason we lost.

Good on Gary I say, an innovative move.

Its funny how he hasn't "represented the club" in such way until this year when he is likely to get the sack.

He hasn't refused one Radio or TV interview this year. I am sure as hell he did in the past.

As I said no one can blame him for that and everyone else would do the same. Best of luck to him

OH PLEASE NO! and the same can be said for O'Donnell, Craig, Wallace and Eade!

Ayres is a better coach than all of the above...the players need a kick up the butt...and so does our recruiter...for mine he has been in the job far too long and escaping with no criticism...Its time to go James!

What style of game did the Doggies play under Jonas?
I can tell you that in 1999 the Dogs finished in a disappointing 7th position. Jonas was thought to be pretty lucky by a number of people to keep his job as senior coach in 2000, when the CDFC went through a major personnel change.

It may have just been a coincidence but Jonas really struggled in his initial years at the club, and you could say had an 'ideal' list brought to him (similar to Grant Thomas with St Kilda) primed to win the clubs first premiership. The next season (2001) he left to be by Malcolm Blight's side at St Kilda.

I've heard wonderful things about what he did with the under 18s squad a few years back and it appears as though he has a canny knack for working with youngsters. Marco Bello has turned into one of the SANFL's premier midfielders, and still thinks Jonas had the greatest impact on his career during his early years at the Dogs.

To be honest I don't quite think Jonas has been proven to be up to AFL standard, obviously I don't know how his reputation at Sydney is at the moment, but I reckon he'd be an ideal assistant coach to someone like Terry Wallace or Malcolm Blight, but not really senior coach material.

Sorry Peter!!!

I heard on the channel 7 promo for their news that the Crows had spoken to the man they want for next year.

I watched their sport segment, but there was nothing said there. Surely they didn't use this as the lead story of the news?? Did anybody watch 7 news in Adelaide??

I don't think the average Crow punter would be too thrilled if Ayres was the target for next year's coach.

Yep it was the lead story. They didn't say a great deal except showed the Peter Jonas thing from the paper and said he is the front runner but "channel 7 believes Rodney Eade is the man the Crows want", they also mentioned Neil Craig and someone else who I forget(pretty sure it wasn't Terry Wallace) as being candidates.

Gary O'Donnell??????

I would rather keep Ayres than have Eade as our next coach.
