That's the whole point. He shouldn't be captain but because he is we are inventing ways to keep him in the team. I'm not saying he shouldn't be on our list but I am saying he is not best 22 anymore.

Defensive forwards (who basically tag the opposition player who sets up counter attacks from half-back) were 'invented' a long time ago.

Gears is doing that job exceptionally well. He's also kicking the occasional goal & creating opportunities for his team mates too.

Best 22 is an irrelevant concept these days... you pick players who can play the roles that the coach demands. Is Geary in the top 22 best pure footballers on our list? No. Is he a better option than guys that are more skilful but don't have the mental edge that he has? Yes.

He'll keep leading the team until his ability to play the specific role that Ratts wants him to play drops away.

I have no doubt that we'll have a new captain by the start of 2021 anyway... my bet is that Jack Steele will be the man.

And this is the sort of warped thinking that has delivered 27 wooden spoons.

Haha yeah playing a guy in a vital role that he’s more than competent at is what has held us back for 140+ years.

Maybe you spend some time learning about the history of the club... start with the St Kilda Cricket Club & join the dots.

Would argue it’s quite clear Steele should be our captain.
By the end of this year we will see who has become our leader on and off the field.
ATM we have several players coming to the fore.

Steele has led brilliantly this year.
Billings has grown in stature.

Seeing as he’s not even in the leadership group I wouldn’t deem that to be clear.

Not to rule him out.

Steele has clearly become our on-field leader.

He’s the man now.

Things have changed quite a bit since February.

Being the captain is a lot more than playing well every week.

The amount of random names that are brought up in here after someone plays a good games suggests people are only considering on field performance when thinking about the captaincy when thats just a small part of the selection criteria.

With the role of leadership groups these days, the title of Captain is more about off field than it is on field.

How does that player present in team meetings? What are their training standards? Their off field behaviour? Can they hold other players to account without being hypocritical? Are they able to present to executives, and sponsors? Are they someone the entire playing list connects with? How do they present within the media? Does they player even want to be the captain and have all the extra responsibilities involved with being a leader within a club?

Now, not saying that Steele doesnt tick all these boxes or that he wouldnt be a great next captain but leading through performance on field doesn't instantly mean someone should be the captain.

And we need to consider that there would be a reason that Steele wasn't voted into the leadership group in February - it's a big jump from not being selected to being the main leader within the club and everything involved with that.

A vital role....maybe. Four or five younger players that can do the role better than Geary....Definitely.

I think Ratten should rotate the captaincy next year. Choose a group of 5 players in the leadership group and let each of them be captain for a block of 4 games each. Of course that would depend on injuries. Then in 2022 select 2 co-captains from that group and 2 vice captains and the other player just remains in the leadership group.

Spot on, Dustin Martin best player at the Tigers, never see him full time capt
maybe Hannerbery was earmarked when recruited ?
We still need a A grade midfielder , any potential captains out there ?
might end up like Steve Smith , given heaps of time to develp his captaincy
Any talk from the club

Noticed he has been doing a few interviews , the thing is he willing to take the captains job.
I would have Billings after Steele.

The leadership group I think was Geary , Ross , Billings , Membery and Roberton.

Co captains?

Geary is lucky to get a game, sure he is a leader, but nothing else. has his good moments but everyone else always does. Mediocrity at its finest.
