If no one is stepping up and demanding the captaincy, don't change it for the sake of changing it.
Would rather wait this year and next if say a developing young player could take the mantle.
Coffield at 21? If you're good enough, you're old enough.

He has been one of our best since the bye last Year.
Down game against hawks and made to play vfl in round 1 for 'team balance'.
Only 23 and still improving.

He had a good debut season, 3 ho hum seasons, and half a good season last year.
Lots of 20 possession games, which is good enough to make the side, but nothing to get excited about. No way is Dunstan crying out for the captaincy certainly not ahead of Ross.

You are correct he would not be ahead of Ross as it stands.
I was talking about the future.
I didn't say he was crying out for it.
Just seems a likely type.
You dont need 30 touches a game to be a captain.
Ross seems a quiet type, and if he was up to it probably showing more onfeild leadership by now.
Dunstan is younger, already seems more of a goalkicker and tackling contested ball player than ross.
No knock on ross.

He leads by example.
One of few amongst our mids and half fwds who doesn't seem to drop his head at any stage and keeps fighting.
But right now he doesnt seem to have the players following him.
Maybe it will come.
Maybe he needs that label to feel he has authority to demand more of his peers?

I thought that was sort of a captains goal he kicked in the 3rd against melb, that could have been a tide turner..
But no-one got around him?
I assume hes liked,
might just need to get more vocal?

That's an interesting observation, do we know why he was out of the team for the first two rounds? Somebody implied it was am internal discipline issue, maybe there's something to that.

Best mates with Acres & seems to be popular amongst his teammates.

It has been said on here by a poster that he was out for discipline issues.

Can be well liked but not respected, discipline issues can mean absolutely anything, two games isn't a penalty for rank farting in the huddle.

Carlisle is my choice a little left field but has presence on the field & fairly reliable.
I feel the same, he'd probably want to remove the heat of the moment gentle throat grabs from his game, but taking on captaincy would probably elevate him above that behaviour anyway. I really think we'd see him grow if given that responsibility.

What we have here is a failure to communicate! Some men you just cant reach. Cool hand Luke is the only way to go!

Don't leave it for the sake of leaving it . It's time for a change . Start next year with a new zest. Ross has to be the man . Mature enough. Won last years b and f and he s a midfielder. Let him step up , raise his own game and lead from the middle.

The other strange thing to consider is that our drafting and trading had -i believe- leadership qualities as a key criteria.

Newnes
Mav
Longer
Dunstan
Paddy
Billings

All drafted as underage captains iirc.

Where is the leadership? It's seriously lacking on game day, that is certain.
Under age captaincy is bullshit - it’s generally a popularity contest. Be a funny ****er or simply the best player in a team and you’ll get the votes.

In an AFL environment you need to be a noted and easy best 22, you need to be good for the media, you need to know how to handle egos, and you should have some form of loyalty. Most of this is redundant in junior footy.

Our Captain is loyal

and

and

that's about it

Surely we only have one option and that is Seb Ross. I cant think of any other player at the moment.

Yuck.

Probably the worst member of our leadership team we have. Spends too much of his time currently sooking and point fingers at others.

He's been more disappointing that any other player this year IMO (and don't throw possession stats up to argue)

I must miss that stuff. Seems a natural leader to me and secondly there isn't many if any better options.

Agree wholeheartedly. This blokes cheap possessions are masking his poor output this year in clearances and leadership!

The first rule of statistics is that correlation does not equal causation. But gee it's hard to ignore in this circumstance.

Thst last quarter was done entirely with our captain Geary on the bench. And it was the best quarter of the year by a long long way. Skills looked slicker, energy was up and their were fewer turnovers. Surely this has to create even further doubts and to whether his position as captain can be upheld.

Geary is starting to become a real issue for our club. He has been overtaken in his position this year, his disposal is consistently poor and deflating, and his leadership has not appeared to be anything special either.

Captains don’t get dropped, but there must be a change for next year. If we were in contention this year, there would be a good argument that a change was more urgent. Luckily for him, he will avoid this humiliation.

Our captain doesn’t need to be our best player, but he does need to be comfortably in our top 6.

Geary's inability to get it done onfield was always the issue. This year has exposed the importance of it.

The last quarter was or should be an eye opener for everyone, we looked composed and tough without him.

No Geary - no problem.
