A captain in my eyes has to have quite a bit of campaigner in them with the ability to on field coach as well as leading by example with football smarts.

Jack Steele is my vote.

Has he got the footy smarts. They need to be able to be a bit of an on field coach as well.

Yes he does and as for the latter he's not part of the current leadership group so it's not his role but if given the opportunity i believe in him. He sets high standards for himself so that's a start.

Ratts to channel Clarko and use Ross as a Richie Vandenberg stop gap captain for a year or two. Not good enough for the 22? Who cares.
Geary was meant to be that and yet here we are. In his 3rd year of captaincy. Still bombing balls with 75 seconds left in a drawn game.

To be fair to Geary it isn't his fault not one single player has put their hand up to become an on field leader since he took over.

It's neither here nor there at this point of time, but Riewoldt should never have given up his captaincy.

Well Geary's hardly been a stellar onfield leader now has he? As we've just discussed he's incompetent of the most basic of captain's roles. Not instantly panicking under pressure.

Geary was selected because he was the most respected leader to take over from Reiwoldt , however on the field he lacks the qualities that is really needed to be a leader.
Some one who can pick up his game in a attempt to turn a game.
This year Billings and Steele have shown more every game than anyone else and one of the main reason's Ratten said in comments last week that Billings and Steele will get it.

Time to pass the baton on to a new face

From afar Steele looks like he has the ingredients to be our next captain but I don't know much about him or why he's not in the current leadership group. His play this season certainly seems to have improved under Ratts, so maybe his confidence will also rise consistent with the change from being a dour stopper to a creative playmaker. Clarke is showing the qualities needed for a future captaincy in about 3 years time.

Wait until you see Byrnes on Monday. Was The Sandringham Dragons skipper so should also be in consideration in the future. I expect him to tear it up on Monday. No pressure son. ;)

I'd say anyone not in the leadership group won't be the captain next year.
It’s a really interesting situation. I’ve been happy with Geary to be captain over the last few years but it’s time to move on. He’s going to turn 33 next year, if he goes on.

No clear option. Billings I’ve always seen as more of a quiet leader who isn’t quiet captain material but he might be the best option.

Leadership suits Billings. He seems to thrive with responsibility. And he's really improved with his public speaking.
I think he'd be a great captain.

From our current leadership group I think Billings and Membery porobably have my vote. I'd like to see Steele, Wilkie and Battle get their noses at least in the leadership group the next couple of years, from the outside looking in they seem to have a bit of leadership about them.

I can see one of Membrey (turns 27 during next season) or Billings (25 for next season) getting the role and then holding it for 4-5 years before handing to King once he's 23-25 years old.

Against the dogs smashed JJ, Saints win
Against Carlton destroyed Doc, Saints win
Against Crows blanketed Smith, Saints win.
I would suggest that Geary shutting down the oppositions key play maker and drying up the oppositions best ball mover is a factor in 3 of our victories.
Geary might not be the most skilful player in our team but I suggest he is far from our biggest problem.
