What about a Jack Steele/Zac Jones captaincy? Either as co-captains or one of them Vice Captain.

Seb Ross isn’t a suitable VC. It’s time for change and it’s time the club pushed some new faces into leadership roles.
I love this . Both mids who can change the game off their own boot and hands . Both hard at it . Would symbolize nicely what we’re about . Do it !!

I reckon Max King is only 18 months away from captain material. Can we squeeze another year out of Geary? Resulting from the improvement of our younger mids, Ross will struggle to hold his spot. Membrey & Billings would be favourites.

Before going off tap about Steele as our new mid saviour lets see him get those numbers against a team that is not in turmoil , I love how Jack goes about it but he has never got near those numbers in the the past , as they say one swallow doesnt make a summer

I thought the same as you Captain but when I checked his stats he's actually played 10 games with more possessions than he got against Adelaide. He has also had 20 contested possessions against West Coast in 2017. Monday's game was the most clearances he's had in a game though. I really like the way he goes about it too, but that doesn't necessarily make him the best choice for captain.

Almost need to bring back the old GT rotating captaincy and see who is best suited to it.

We have a handful of decent candidates but no real standouts, not the worst problem to have, but would certainly be nice to already have a clear standout.
Would be ok with this. Or wouldn't mind a Ross Lyon 2007 like idea either (Ball, Hayes, Lenny).

I'm on the rotating captains too with the caveat that they need to have a fair idea of the final "one".

I knew someone closely involved at that time with GT that reckoned that it built the base of an actual leadership group rather than a paper one. With Roo as the medium (long) term vision/hope at the end of the process.

The complete unselfishness of Lenny was a mark of the (young) man in that equation so that is a very important part and can't be discounted.

You could see the love Roo has for Lenny with the Hall of Fame induction. I think a lot of it stemmed from that process in the early days.

Who is the next "one" that at the start of 2024 is ready to lead our group post Gears and who is the loyal but also unselfish lieutenant?

If you went that path...I'm a fan of it

Sorry i should have been more clear , i was more talking about how many clearances he got (13) , Your right he got 10 against the eagles back in 2017 but his best this year had been 5 clearances so its a bit of a one of so far

To quote Richo...'Yeah nah'.
Why are Australian cricket captains predominantly batsmen? Because Keepers have enough to do and Bowlers are thinking about their attack on the batsmen...they have enough to do. Bowlers I equate to forwards Batsmen mids and backs. Keeper is the specialist viz Ruckman.
So using that logic Steele or Zac Jones as they have that come on boys follow me aura. Then maybe Clarke or Battle if they show the traits necessary.

King at this stage cannot hold his marks and if he played like he does at the moment and his name was Bruce he would be dropped. He has to get that right with his development....same with Marshall.

In years to come teams will be planning how to stop King and he will have to work around that....if he can then he gets the gig. Just like Rooey had to do.

Carey & Roo did alright as young key forward captains. Anyhow, I’m not advocating King is made captain tomorrow, I’m predicting in 2022 he’s one of the best tall forwards in the comp & bags 60 or so goal. For mine he’s got an old head on his shoulders. Complete opposite to Billings who has taken half his career to mature.

Doogs will be our captain.

Although BJ never got the captaincy even though he had the passion for directing the troops. I liked seeing someone who actually gave a shit though. I reckon Wilkie has more the calm manner for it but you wouldn't be surprised if we grab a back man as a captain. A lot of our quality is back there.

Billings just doesn't have the vibe to me. Maybe I'm remembering the shy kid not the mature man but he looks pained in public. Gears has the affable everyman down pat, he could literally talk to a CEO or a toothless fan on their level. Billings looks like school kid talking to the principal with both. Membrey always seems like he's had a few bongs out the back and looks a bit vague, Steele is a bit self contained and smiles but not much of a talker.

I haven't ben down to the club much in the last couple of years but from a distance the new guys seem to be a better lot as far as leaders go. Wilkie's premiership captaincy gives him a big tick for me but would like to see his media form first. Howard speak well in the media.

King is currently 10th in the league for contested marks (1st among rising stars). He is definitely holding his marks, he's just not holding all of them. Doing an amazing job 7 games in to his career.

Its sad that we even have a thread about our skipper , im not a big fan of gears but respect what he has been able to achieve, he is no leader IMO and we didnt have too many options at the time ,

The past few seasons, JB looks much less panicked and nauseous when speaking in public.
He seems to thrive with responsibility despite him coming across as extremely shy.
