Widespread job losses strike AFL, phony Covid measures get real & its coming to your club too.

A significant restructure of the AFL executive is part of major cost-cutting measures implemented by the league on Monday that will result in mass redundancies across Australia.

AFL issues redundancies nationwide as clubs begin to cut
assistant coaches

The measures will extend to the competition’s 18 clubs, with high-quality assistant coaches being informed they will lose their jobs from next season due to a cut to football department spending.

The blood is on one mans hands here. He had the option to make more money and save more job but turned it away just to protect his own ego

Lets hope at least half of the 10 x $800,000 plus executives get the arse but it looks like just a shuffling of the deck chairs on the Titanic!

The AFL continue to pay Brad Scott as part of the deal over his departure from North:
'Former North Melbourne coach Brad Scott, who had joined the league in a football operations role, will now head AFL Victoria, while Trisha Squires will move from the Tasmanian chief role to be in charge in Queensland.'

& there is how to cut the Wages bill without losing someone:
'Ray Gunston, who had been in charge of the Marvel Stadium redevelopment, will move to a consulting role.'

In other words Gil kept his mates in a job and fired those who actually contribute instead

Anyone else think axing the person in charge of policing the salary cap might prove to be a problem down the line?

Also side note there are/were so many AFL executives that were on huge salaries that did not seem to be doing much. The AFL definitely became very bloated with those in charge giving high paying jobs to their friends.

Brad Scott's contract with NMFC was to end this year. https://www.nmfc.com.au/news/280461/brad-scott-extends-contract

Especially given they're tightening up both the salary cap and the football department cap.

Integrity has never been much of a priority with the AFL in recent times though.

Was Gil warned of the specifics of changes to Jobkeeper, so transfers the poor souls on to Jobseeker?

Hopefully someone posing as a real journo will ask about the $400 mil.

Can you craft the question for us? Maybe a real journo might be reading and can steal your genius question

How are they beggars????

The game is on life support. $500 million loan to get the league through the season.

NAB won't be very happy if the AFL goes turning its nose up at the $35 million on offer from WA to host the GF.

That was a question Kwality

One might have thought the $400m might relate to losses due to Covid-19

My question OR the question.
I'd keep it simple, say, Its claimed the AFL is heading for a $400 mil loss, other than the reduced media rights what are the major contributors?
Gil will know the numbers, he'd have run it past the Commission. If he ducks & dives, its BAD. A straight answer suggests there is financial control in line with the operational control we have seen getting the games played.

Might help if the AFL just concentrated on managing football instead of trying to set itself as the highest example of political correctness. If you’re having to tighten the purse strings you get rid of the non essentials and no profit parts of your business

The game is on life support? You have no idea whatsoever. Whatsoever

Why won't NAB be happy? The line of credit has barely been drawn upon

People getting excited about the "$400M loss" are probably up for bit of disappointment.

-The $400M loss almost certainly refers to revenues, including this year and the next tow in terms of the 13% reduction in TV revenues
-The communication of it in the context of an announcement of lost jobs is almost certainly motivated by a comms excercise
-The use of job keeper and furloughing of most of the staff has reduced a huge part of the wage bill for this year
-The AFL has essentially "never let a crisis go to waste" and made big cuts to head office and carved a massive chunk out of the football department soft cap which will save significantly in its distributions to the smaller clubs
-There is little evidence that the clubs have ultimately required access to the line of credit. Both Melbourne and North Melbourne, of all clubs, have briefed

If you look at last years annual report, you can imagine where the cuts will show on expenditure side of the p&l....

In terms of "operating expenses" the AFL removing "20% of its roles" will translate to, say, $40M in savings - perhaps more. They will probably save at least the same again in payments to clubs given they have reduced club spend by $4M through chopping the soft cap on the football department

So after all that the AFL will emerge from the crisis leaner, and in better shape "fiscally" than they went in to it.

And I am sorry Winky but the AFL are primed to invest even more in the AFLW going forward.
