He's a good tackler doesn't mind getting the hard ball and mans up opponents well.

Why didn't Barry Hall get time? Was much much worse than what Marley Williams did. Maybe Marley should of broken a players jaw on the footy field and just taken a 8 week holiday.
Well staker didnt press charges.

He will get time. He broke a mans jaw and he needed surgery. Somewhere around the 1 year mark.

Thanks for contributing that valuable information and answering my question.

What are you on about

Well if Barry hall isn't in jail cause Staker didn't press charges. How can someone who's dead press charges on a murderer?

They dont because they're dead.. what are you trying to say. The core of the question was why marley is going to jail but barry hall never did for an equally damaging punch on staker.

Well the backline continues to be unsettled with Brown & Sinclair getting injured. Keefe will be the Brown replacement, although I see them as very different players. Sinclair has been great on the small forwards and will be missed against the Cats who have leg speed. Fasolo seems to be first in line to come in, but I can't say I am filled with confidence in regards to his defensive game.

A backline really needs a settled back 6 to gel together and work effectively, constant changes are bad news.

On the positive side of things I really loved Frost's game against Sydney. Watching it on replay he looked even better. He has fantastic agility and speed and I think his ball handling is improving as his confidence grows. With Brown & Reid down we now will really rely on Frost continuing to improve, there is not really a plan D after Keefe & Frost.

Dasher Young must play back and take as many kick outs as possible. An area we have franklly been deplorable in. Young can really penetrate zones and clear the ball from danger, he is also capable of being a 80m player with his run and kicking, If he stays fit for the year we are on a winner, I am forecasting he will be one of our most important players by years end, if he stays back.

Also, loved Goldsacks work when he had to go back on Reid. His flexibility to do that after we lost Brown is very valuable. I still think this is is his best position although he was quite handy up forward too. Classic utility.

Maxwell also deserves a mention, it was like 2010 there against Sydney. Most sides will not allow him that leeway though. He looks fit & fresh, perhaps losing the captaincy lifts some pressure to play his natural game. You cannot buy his desperation in defence. He does need a comabtive game though, free flowing loose games with quick ball movement find him out - and the rest of the team as well.

Soon enough we will have some reinforcements returning from injury to the backline. Seedsman, Oxley, Reid (as an option), Sinclair, Brown, Fasolo, Broomhead and dare I say Marley all provide quality backline options. The injuries (& GBH charges) seem to have targeted our backline this year. Of course we also have Clarke, Yags & Armstrong who are struggling to impress as AFL players not sure how they have done at VFL level.

Yags was named in the best and has been pretty consistent.

Well time to revisit the backline. Somehow against all odds our backline has held together. Make no mistake our backline has had a nuclear bomb dropped on it when you revisit what was envisaged at the start of the year.

We are talking about a back 6 that at the start of the year would have been unthinkable other than in the VFL. They held Carlton to 2 goals in 3 quarters, probably only Marley Williams was near our preferred backline at the start of the year and he was coming off a long break. It did require dragging Goldsack, Lumumba and Taylor Adams down back to cover.

Frost, Keefe, Langdon & Williams were the only recognised defenders playing last week and they have less games between them than 1 of our regular defenders. All are impressive in their own right and hard to see them being omitted.

So lets look at our "depth" to come back:

The no brainers:
Maxwell - best year for a while
Toovey - our best pure defender
Young - done his best work behind the ball, I love his kick outs, been craving a guy like this.

Formerly walk up starts:
Brown - must be frustrating for him, potentially a chance to come back if Adel go for Jenkins, Pods & Tax next game. I like him on Tex.
Seedsman - we really need his quality disposal back in, but not sure he comes into the backline now. I think Lumumba should be feeling nervous about his position as Seeds offers a lot more class, poise and certainly disposal quality
Sinclair - his injury was ill timed for him, he was close to being that quick small defender we needed and impressed. Long way back now, but we know he can do a job.

Others:
Fasolo - showed a lot and maybe we persist, but with others coming back I like him forward of the ball, his use of the ball will make our forwards life easier.
Clarke - Not sure we will see him at AFL level again, given the options at our disposal
Armstrong - same as Clarke
Ramsay - still needs time, I see him on a similar slow developmnet route as Seedsman
Oxley - Another whose injury was horribly timed, he could have filled Langdon's role.
Scharenburg - An option at start of the year, interested to see what he can do later in VFL.
Yagmoor - still doing OK at VFL but not demanding selection, and this is the year he must do this

Utilities:
Lumumba -showed he can still go back and with all these midfield options and him not performing consistently he may need to learn again, yes harsh but reality.
Goldsack - Cemented a forward position but also showed he can still go back when needed
Reid - Still an option but needed more up forward now unless we get more injuries.

What a wonderful headache we will have choosing our best back six. Who would have thought?
I have tried and can't, keep finding reasons why we can't leave one out for another.

Lumumba hasn't been performing because he has had to play down back. Once our backline goes full strength Lumumba is an automatic selection on the wing.

Williams Brown Toovey

Langdon Frost Young

- I would love to see Fasolo play through the middle of the ground and stints up forward. As good as he has been down back.
- Keefe & Brown is a swap for each other only.
- Frost is a lock regardless , he has the speed advantage above Brown and Keefe

How do will deal with the opponents 3 tall, say against a GWS or GCS?

Good question!!! Ideas ? I cant honestly answer that. Suppose Swannies is another that swings to mind. Wondering whether maybe if teams do go that tall whether we can afford to play Brown Keefe and Frost?

I don't think this season, but maybe next? Or whenever Maxy retires?
Maybe if we play a 3 tall Backline, Reid needs to be involved as he his a fantastic rebounder.

Very true

Saying that Scharenberg has a bit of size about him? 190 cm or there abouts. Could take that third tall.

I think the backline since the freo game and team defence in general has been excellent.

No team has scored more then 70 points against us.

Frost and Keeffe have both won their fair share of 1v1s too so it isn't just the extra numbers getting back and pressure up field though this is playing a big part in it.

Looking forward to getting Reid back into that backline now that we have good structure up forward again. Frost, Reid, Langer make a good trio of composed marking and running backs with good disposal and decision making. If you add Shazza to that mix when available you have a Hawthorn style backline full of run and disposal efficiency.

The biggest problem is going to be finding the right balance.

Hmm I actually don't believe we do have a "good" structure up forward yet, is it improved on last year yes but White still isn't dangerous enough to stop Clokes double teams.
We need Reid forward imo it will make us much much more dangerous when going forward will also allow Cloke to push up out of the 50 having a tall marking threat in Reid deeper.

It's a balancing act loki I understand and appreciate your scenario, I just come down on the side of the two young rucks - who by the way are now starting to clunk marks and hit the scoreboard.
