Amazon Prime spruiking it now for $30.

That was the rental fee I believe. To purchase it was $35. Which is what I did, I’m a sucker for making things easy and to just click a few buttons and watch it on the smart tv, I went ahead with that option.

Watched the first half last night, just an outstanding film. The first 90 minutes/2 hours just breeze by. Still have a few question marks on that last 20 minutes or so. Overall though, just a ******* glorious movie.

Outstanding filmmaking.

Just need to try and find 3 hours to watch it now haha.

Rewatching in smaller instalments probably the best way to approach it.

I picked up little things that I completely missed in the cinema experience. There’s a great tidbit of Batman’s first visit to the Iceberg Lounge, the first time he meets Penguin. I had my headphones in so could pick up little bits of dialogue.

After knocking down the twin bouncers who met him at the door, there’s a group of people he charges past. One of them yells “what is your problem”. The other says to the twins “I saw the whole thing!”, perhaps offering to support their story with the police :D

Of course though nothing can replicate that Batmobile start up that I was lucky enough to experience in imax. Felt like the cinema shook. ******* mindblowing. That s**t is going to stay with me for a long time.

I still haven't seen it yet - we're still mid renovations so tossing up whether to wait until I've got the 75inch back up on the wall with the surround sound or whether I just watch it on the gaming monitor with headphones on...

Oops sorry, I thought you’d seen it already. Didn’t mean to spoil anything, apologies.

Watched it again over two nights, honestly not as good as the first viewing. Maybe because not in the theatre but still enjoyable

Oh man, that was super underwhelming. Apologies for the long post to follow…feel free to critique all of it.

Casting - awful. Carmine was poorly cast, really thought Zoe Kravitz was average at best. It was impressive Colin Farrell was Penguin under all that but the Penguin character was really nothing special. Found the Riddler to be completely uninspiring as well. Personally think Gotham had a much better Riddler and Penguin.

Batman - thought RP was an appalling Bruce Wayne. Just never felt like the millionaire playboy at all. May as well have been an average Joe down the road. Was decent enough as Batman but that really felt about it. Liked him more than Batfleck but still have Bale comfortably ahead (yeah yeah, I know).

Batsuit - absolutely perfect…except for the ******* nose piece. Noticed it the whole movie. Just make the cowl one piece. The nose section essentially reminded me of a nose job the whole movie .

Sound effects/score - soooooo unnecessary. Ruined so many scenes. You don’t need to add sound for the sake of it. Even the scene with the Batmobile is ruined for me (more on that soon).

Unnecessary cinematography - a slow mo of Batman diving into flood water that never genuinely looked life threatening? Come on now…

Batmobile - perhaps this is because I work in a mechanical workshop that specialises in race cars but the Batmobile really didn’t impress me at all. Yep, it’s a V8. Basically just seemed like a car a rich person could buy. Always loved the Batmobile because it was out of the ordinary. No one could just buy it.

Overall story - though it was actually really good. Engaging and wasn’t the reason I was disappointed. Thought there was enough there for a 3 hour movie.

CGI - woeful. How in this day and age, this gets through is beyond me. I had a couple of drinks and still noticed this kick missed by 3 feet ffs. It’s 2022, how can they miss how bad this looks?!

I’ll definitely watch it again at some point but it really wasn’t what I was hoping it would be.

Again I appreciate a considered critique and a subjective medium isn’t above criticism. I don’t agree with it but I applaud the thought and effort, BUT…

Get out with the criticism of Zoe Kravitz man. She’s great and her chemistry with R-Batz is awesome.

Also this is a different take on Bruce, so by all means don’t like it etc. but R Patz did “it” (as in the reclusive damaged shut in Bruce) really well.

I like that they actually pushed the whole narrative that he's a broken and driven by anger and revenge over the death of his parents. It's and element of Bruce that gets brushed over in previous films IMO.

I could be wrong, but Spider-man and Bats have the most films/reboots of comic book characters - so to have a slightly different take on Bruce Wayne was refreshing.

The animated films constantly nail the detective noir feeling that Batman, so it was good to see finally see that with this film.

Haha she was 'alright'. Hated her face mask as well. Just looked terrible.

Yep, no doubting that. I personally don't think he has what it takes to pull off Bruce but he was very good as Batman. In terms of my criticism/disappointment, RP is much lower on the list.

Look, i can live with the R-Patz criticism (i dont really agree with it, personally this angry moody version of a young Bruce makes the most sense to me. Kid lost both his parents to a violent crime, i doubt that turns someone into a playboy overnight and i also suspect that he will realise as he gets older that the Bruce Wayne persona is as important as the Batman one and will grow into it) BUT i cant with the Zoe criticism. To each their own but shes amazing in this.

I’ll definitely watch it again at some point but it really wasn’t what I was hoping it would be.

Couple of tidbits for consideration here:

The lack of differentiation between Bruce Wayne and Batman is a conscious choice. Year 2 Batman, doesn’t care at all from Wayne Enterprises. Has to be coerced by Alfred to even meet with their accountants to attend to whatever decisions are required for the company. “What I’m doing is my family’s legacy”. He doesn’t even recognise as yet the need for a public persona of Bruce Wayne, and the influence he can generate by leaning into that direction.

It took me a couple of watches to really appreciate the muscle car concept. The car is hand built. During the opening hour or so, there’s a number of glimpses of the car underneath a cover, the engine being worked on, tools surrounding it etc. He’s working on it throughout. It’s not just a car that any rich person can purchase, surely the outer shell is obviously a muscle car of some kind. However transitioning it from that by hand to the Batmobile end product is something that makes a lot sense.

Lastly, that clip you posted, hadn’t really noticed it before. However has he actually pretending to be kicked, or has he tried to duck/weave out of the way and then try and shoot Batman? Difficult to tell for me.

Style over substance is an issue in a lot of modern fight choreography. It stands out in The Last Jedi if you slow down the scene where Rey/Kylo fight Snoke's red guards. Though I'd take some mistimed stunt work over the shaky cam/cut away fights you get in other movies.

It's not even really RP criticism - yeah I think he played a really poor BW but that wasn't because of his acting, it was the role itself. But I definitely see your point RE him growing into the BW persona.

Did you like the Catwoman get up? I suppose the rest of it was fine but the mask just seemed so pathetic. Not Zoe's fault of course but just added to the 'ehh' feeling I had about that character.

Yep, that's completely fair enough (and makes sense as to why we so little BW).

The outer shell is absolutely muscle car but that's fairly attainable still. Making it hand made adds uniqueness but really, money can buy that as well (in terms of getting someone else to create it). It just didn't feel like it had enough R & D in it for me. Sounded nice but I've spent a lot of time around V8's so that probably wasn't as special to me as it will be for others.

Could be either I suppose. If you can't differentiate between those two options though, it's probably worth reshooting it. Just a small thing of course but found it very odd.

Just about the perfect example to utilise for your point. That fight looks great at first glance but upon further inspection, it’s comically bad.

I’ll also add that I feel the major issues of this film are felt in its closing half hour. It genuinely felt like the movie was coming to a natural end after Riddler is arrested. The flooding etc seemingly came out of nowhere and felt a bit jarring in the context of the established story up until then.

I’m of the view though that it wasn’t the original choice and was quite possibly an adjustment made due to the shutdowns experienced through various Covid lockdowns etc.

Structurally however, in terms of performances, directing, musical score and cinematography, it’s comprehensively one of best made films in that aspect that I’ve seen. Almost flawless in that respect.

As for Paul Dano, I thought he was brilliant too. Have you seen Prisoners? That stayed with me a for a long time. He was genuinely unsettling in that film.
