Congrts to McCullum.

How's this for an effort, here's the leading run scorers in a 2 test series.

1. 571-Sanath Jayasuriya vs Ind 1997
2. 563-Wally Hammond vs Nze 1933
3. 540-Andy Flower vs Ind 2000
4. 535 - Brendan McCullum v India 2014
5. 510-Mahela Jayawerdena vs Saf 2006
And 2 of his 4 innings totalled 9 runs.

2 test series? NZ 1 up, they will bat as long as they need to.
great! i thought it was 3 tests...

congrats NZ, congrats mccullum (honourable mentions to watling and neesham).

ODIs against the then ranked no 1 side: 4-0 (5); tests against the no 2 side: 1-0 (2).

fair effort by NZ ranked around 7-8th in both.

As of the 8th Feb, this is the current test cricket rankings.
With the Saffers getting smashed and India outplayed since then, would they have changed. Does anyone know how points get allocated.
Team Matches Points Rating
South Africa 30 3988 133
India 36 4213 117
Australia 39 4314 111

From memory it's based on past results and series', India will go backwards, we won't move until this series is over.

How good would a SAffar white wash be? Cart before the horse... but a great thought.
Would be awesome, but I'd take 2-1 or 2-0 with solid performances. It's taken awhile, but all of a sudden the Test team is looking mostly settled again*.

*Replacing Haddin will be a pain though.

I've always rated McCullum very highly. Love the way he goes about his cricket.

Good to see a few of the top order score well. Smith is the real deal, and it's also nice to be able to say that Watson isn't a walk up start when fit again.
Fast bowling stocks are awesomeat the moment. We have the best spinner now since Warne.
Rogers age and low scores are an issue.

How's the experience differences.
Our top 4 scored 440 runs in that test, with a combined total of 49 tests, wth only Rogers missing out.
Their top 4 scored 90 runs in the test , with a combined total of 230 tests

go to agree, but he has a record almost identical to hughes... shows what faith and consistent selection can do with his turnaround. hasnt smith been given some major leeway?
He's been given chances in a different way, as opposed to getting long stints, he's been picked without doing much at Shield level, but it's paid off.

Has come a long way from the very good gloveman who once batted as a slogger at #8 in the test team.

Agree wholeheartedly on Smith, they got it right picking him. If he can improve his bowling even a little bit too, that would be great as a 5th option.

The bowling attack is the key, even when we struggled, we had a good pace attack, just there were problems elsewhere. It's good to see that there's some actual faith in Lyon too, it was ridiculous when despite him bowling well, he was getting dropped in India for Doherty, or in England for Agar, or there was talk of 4 quicks. He was underrated, but it seems he's finally getting the credit for what is now close to 3 years as the best spinner we have.

On Lyon, I thought before this series started he'd be the main difference between the 2 sides in our favour. Obviously Mitch has continued with his absolute purple patch.

Is there room for Watson in the test team when he regains fitness?

In my opinion, no.
Averaged 38 in the recent Ashes tour, and 41 in the England series.
Not too bad, but we need more from him.
I'm on the fence whether we need him or not at this stage.
