Is there any young Australian fast bowler whose body can handle 1 day of test cricket?
Doesn't look it :(

If one more bowler goes down this test I'm going to have to stop watching it because it's getting painful to watch, and we'll literally have no healthy bowlers left by then.
Marsh - Hammy
Starc - Heat
Hazlewood - Cramp
Johnson - Back

That leaves Lyon & Smith to spin at one end with Watson & Warner to throw down some mediums. And it's only day one

Well done to Steve Smith on his first day as Australian Captain.

He did as well as could be expected for someone who has had to overcome many barriers to get where he is.

Well done to him. He is an inspiration to many people, including Lee Westwood.

He had a shocker. I also saw him chasing a ball to the boundary, pick it up and throw it 10 metres to another player to hurl it back.
It's ok to do the flick back, but this was an embarrassment. Where's camera man Joe, can't catch, can't throw.

And as we may see tomorrow he can't bat either.

Has cricket reached a stage where "emergency" players need to be considered, to actually replace someone who is injured.
Is there another team sport that you can't call on a reserve player to replace an injured player? And I'm not talking about Siddle fielding. I'm talking about an injured player being removed from the starting 11 to have his spot replaced, able to bat and bowl.
I certainly can't think of any other sport. I'm a cricket traditionalist, but reckon its time this was considered.

Today has been a rare event so I wouldn't call for drastic measures yet

However from reports we are ****** lol

I don't disagree with you except to say that it's not that rare.
A bowler does a hammy day 1, is it time to at least discuss the concept of not being the only team sport in world sport where you can't replace a player. I love the game and consider Test Cricket as the only true form of the game, buts it's always slightly annoyed me that an injured player cannot be replaced.

He can't throw too far because of his elbow surgery, that's why he was in the cordon.

We'll he can't slip, can't throw and hasn't exactly set the world on fire in tests for batting either.
At 31, one would have to query what the **** he's there for.

But that is an issue, The players association can say with back to back tests and the increased schedule there needs to be subs for the bowlers for when they get seriously injured.

If one team has 3 front line pacemen injured then that ruins the game for everyone involved and it is a bad look for cricket.

Are we REALLY going to call Starc a frontline bowler here? Really?

Stark isn't a test bowlers jock strap, if we can somehow draw this test hopefully that lesson will be learnt without too much damage

Considering they only recently got rid of runners after fat campaigners like Ranatunga abused it, I seriously doubt cricket will go this way.

The sub was tried (albeit as a tactical ploy) in ODIs for about 6 months a decade ago, it was a disaster.

He is the best of a bad bunch.
He really isn't.

I think its going even further the other way. Heard that now if a player brings a pre existing injury and then can't take the field, the opposition captain can refuse a replacement and the team fields one short.
I believe it's a new rule

Tbh I like the no runner rule. When a bowler gets injured that team suffers (like today) by being a bowler rotation short, yet batsmen could just keep batting. Swing from the hips and get some whippet to run for them, this is fairer

no truer word spoken, he's a yo yo cricketer yet keeps getting picked despite being consistently inconsistent.

The best performed state player would be Cowan but he ain't going to bat at 5. So who knows really who they'll pick for M.Marsh but I suspect S.Marsh will get a second crack if he fails at the Gabba.

Hard to prove and open to abuse too.

The runner rule was fine in theory, but then flogs started using it for cramp.

The game is better without it, but only because of what it became, not how it began.

Before the Marsh injury I would've said Watto out! (Sure he would have asked for the DRS:p) but it could possibly fall to Faulkner. I'd prefer White tbh.

Honestly I know he's been tried in the middle order but can't remember whether he was successful there or not. I think we need Faulkner tbh, can't rely on Watson overs all series, he has a long injury history and only came back from injury in October/November.

Reckon White's time has passed. Faulkner would be a real chance if he'd made the most of his shield appearances this summer. I wish they'd drop Watson, but unfortunately now Marsh is injured it doesn't appear to be the right time. :(

I'm not sure what's happened to Faulkner. His batting has improved, but he's basically been the 4th/5th bowler for Tasmania. Might make it at test level at some stage, but is too much of a bit-part player right now.
