I was watching the races at Pakenham early this evening and the cameras caught an amazing shot of the full, yellow/orange moon near the horizon. It looks enormous when it is that close to the horizon, especially if it is framed by buildings. I grabbed my eldest daughter (she's 13 and has a love of seeing the moon and the planets too) and we ducked out to a nearby bluff to check it out. Beautiful sight.

Unfortunately, none of my photos came out well, but I was watching the footy tonight and the far more powerful cameras there zoomed up on the moon and gave us a few shots. In the west it didn't have the yellow glow it has tonight in Victoria, but it was still worthy of showing, so I took a screenshot and have included below.

So, enjoy the close up shot of our beautiful spheroid satellite.

Yes the moon was stunning last night. As I said that picture didn't have the colour it had in Victoria, but that picture did allow you to see that the moon is clearly curved.

I think we should also take a moment to pay tribute to the often forgotten and sometimes maligned shadow object.
The shadow odject plays a very important role in our existence with no fanfare whatsoever.

Yes the moon is beautiful but let's not forget the beautiful shadow object. Just because we don't have so many photos doesn't mean the shadow object isn't equally as beautiful and wonderful in its own right.

At least we don't have any BS stories about the shadow object like we do with the moon.

I have, since posting my initial query, googled this shadow object of which you speak and am now aware wtf you're talking about.

This shadow object is the greatest example of making up evidence to suit a theory that I've probably ever seen in my life, and in fact anyone proposing its existence must surely, surely be trolling.

The thing I love most about the shadow object is that it only blocks out the moon, never the stars! It floats around our flat earth, apparently, and never gets between us and the stars somehow, but manages to block the entirety of the moon! Quite the object really.

The stars don't exist unless they are being observed so why would the shadow object have any influence on them?

Greek philosophers huh. Sitting around with the lads all day, talking shit and pontificating, while the women did all the work. One of them smart arses drank himself to death on jailhouse hooch, while his mates egged him on "scull scull scull."

Anyway, back to the moon. Handy bit of kit that thing. Lots of times when I'm staggering home from the pub the only think that keeps me from walking clear into the creek is the beautiful guiding light from the dome globe. Mother natures own fluorescent glow in the dark toy.

I'll be honest; I stopped and howled at it one night, felt kinda silly, and then pushed on home.

Agree the moon is great.
It's important not to make it a competition though. The moon,Sun and shadow object are all equally important in their own right and without any of three we wouldn't exist.

I think we have all howled at the moon at some point in our lives,I know I have also,howling at the moon is a sign of respect and nothing to feel silly about.
