It's laughable how some people are saying they get 15-16-17 in the test. Was just reading the results from the National Draft Camp, and the best anyone got was 14.6.

An average draft camp run is level 13.3. A very good level is 14-plus and 15-plus is rare.

As has been discussed there are clearly different versions of it, a couple years ago i saw kids running til 17 at a state screening draft day (for those who dont get invited to the ais)

the best two readings i have done is 13.1 and 12.9. i was very sick after both efforts but happy to get the scores. i usually average in the high 11's.

hadnt done a thing for 6weeks. got 10.4 yesterday, after a semi relaxed 20minute wieght session, hot day as well think I could get 11 if conditions suited. going to aim for 13 by 2months, but im slow and that doesnt help.

What is the best surface to take the test on? I have done it on the local footy ground, and also hockey field, with the latter returning higher scores. But is a basketball court the best surface/ give a better indication of your true beep test score?

I wonder if people remembering past (high school) scores did the 15m as opposed to the 20m beep test.

It is extremely unusual to break 14 let alone 15 unless you have a pretty established background in sports/athletics and a very very high level of fitness.

The last time I did a beep test I was 14yrs old and can't even remember my score though I don't think to many people broke 10.

Having said that the highest scorer I personally know was a friend of mine with no athletics background and was a fairly average basketballer.
He scored 15.4 at age 14 which was better than one of the guys I knew who played state basketball and dominated state athletics (both 100m sprints and 400m) aswell as another one of my mates (whose dad is a commmon wealth medal winning cyclist) who at the time was training to hopefully eventually become an elite, perhaps olympic level cyclist.

It's not to say that you can't train to that level but I do find it a little hard to believe the claims (though not impossible due to freak ability) that non serious athletes, especially so many highschoolers can get post level 14 times (even 13).

It's not impossible but a fair amount of posters on here seem to be either freaks like my friend or fairly serious athletes.

Question - Can doing the beep test regularly (every 2-3 days) improve your fitness?? Is this a good way to improve your fitness for footy?

really important to remember the beep test is not entirely related to endurnace you also need speed and power when you get in the higher levels of the beep test. Something AFL players have alot more of than the average skinny endurance runner doesnt have.

up to a certain point the high beep test scores sort of become irrelevant. i'd say that if you're getting anything in the 13s or higher you would be better off concentrating your training on bumping up your blood lactate onset levels instead of VOmax levels which are tested on the beep test. Being able to perform at a higher intensity without accumulating lactate is far more important in games like footy.

Without sounding like Mr Fit, I use to do this test with a couple of former/present WAFL players and got 15.9 as a 17 year old. Yes that is better than the draft camp record by .1 as i was striving to break it. Obviously injuries got in the way in the end.

Thats pretty goood

Without sounding like Mr Fit I still do it with heaps of AFL players and i got a 19. Yes that is better than the draft camp record by 3.2 as i was striving to break it. Obviously being full of shit got in the way in the end.

Motivation plays a big factor in your running too.

Chasing after a footy or chasing after another bloke on the footy field is alot easier than running up and down a stupid 20m course.

Beep Test also prevents you from really recovering. In footy games you'll have periods where the ball is out of your area, as well as the Quarter breaks, where you'll be able to recover. You need at least 30 seconds to recover 70% of your energy levels and the Beep Test does not allow for this.

If you arent getting consistently high scores on the Beep Test dont let it discourage you from pursuing footy. Whenever we did the beep test I only did it to beat my mates. Otherwise, I took no real notice of it. My scores were pretty crap anyway, I only ever really got up to mid way through stage 12. On the other hand, ive never really had much problem running out a game of footy. Ill be stuffed after it, but during the game ive never had any fitness related issues. :thumbsu:

I have a PB higher than Paceys, but I have pedigree and he doesn't.:p

It is basically a mental test, rather than physical.

High 15's or low 16s?
