I guess most readers will not have been watching the Bulldogs for the past 70 years, like I have. So they will not have had the direct data with respect to the following list of ten. However, they might be interested in the list, and wish to comment (or disagree with the selections, or the order).
1. Ted Whitten: Mr Football, outstanding all-round skills
2. Kelvin Templeton: Magnificent skills, but career tragically cut short by injury
3. Dougie Hawkins: Exquisite skills
4. Chris Grant: The Great Man, who had a superb all-round game
5. Gary Dempsey: Magnificent mark, and ruckman
6. Jack Collins: Wonderful centre half back, centre half forward and full forward--7 goals in the 1954 grand final
7. Scotty West: Ball magnet with terrific handball skills. Seven best and fairests
8. Herb Henderson: Easily our best full back. He always tamed Coleman.
9. John Schultz: Gentleman John was always in the best players, in any game. Amazing ruckman considering his height.
10. Simon Beasley: Our most prolific goal-kicker
Bernie Quinlan would certainly have been high in this list, except that he played his best football for Fitzroy, after leaving us. Perhaps the Bont or Jack Macrae will make such a list within the next few years.
There are three players from the 1954 premiership team in the above list, but none from the 2016 premiership team. One might say that in1954 we had a team with champions, but in 2016 we had a champion team.
