You might not like it or agree, but in my mind Wayne Carey is undoubtably the best player there has ever been.

Ever since I've been watching footy there's never been anyone that can turn a game like he can. There has never been anyone so reliable, you could kick the ball to him 1 on 1 and you'd be just about guaranteed he'd mark it. There has never been anyone that has meant as much to his team than Carey. Without him I doubt whether the Roos would've won their 2 premierships in 96' and 99' and I doubt whether they would've been such a super team in the 90's.

The only man that comes close is Gary Ablett, Ablett was great but he was never tall enough or as agile as Carey. He couldn't control a game like Carey and didn't have the impact Carey has.

I havent seen every player to play the game but I can't imagine that anyone could be as good as Carey. He is basically the perfect player, you couldn't get a better player. It would be impossible to find another player that can control a game as well as Carey.

As much as I hate him, its true.

Peter daicos was the greatest player i have ever seen and i doubt we will ever see another one!!!!

plugger lockett just his presence on the field scared the crap out of sides.if your side was 5 pts down in a grand final and your player has marked it in the fwd line no other player in the history of the game has ever been a more reliable kick for goal than plugger.
cheers!

ay u r stealing my thoughts. We discussed this on chat last nite. Ablett and Carey for me! close would be Daicos but he was more a freakish type player.

Ablett is the best player I have seen, I rate him just ahead of Carey. Ablett had it all, he had speed and power and was pure excitement everytime he went anywhere near the ball. He only played half his career at FF but still managed to kick a 1000 goals, and who could ever forget his super human performance in the 89 GF.

Carey by a mile in terms of value to a team and club!!!

Ablett awesome individual, but Carey brings more players into the game and hence 2 premierships to Abletts 0.

Just my opinion.

Cheers

And how many Premierships did Bob Skilton,Robbie Flower and Plugger Lockett play in ?

Premierships are team efforts, not individual efforts.

If you want to use premierships as an example, then we could really get techincal and say Ablett played in 4 GF's to Carey's 3 and to make a GF depends on how you performed during the whole year compared to winning premiership which is how you preformed on that day.

Wayne Carey is the best player to have played that I have seen .
One thing that is particularly relevant is his high resistance to pain which has allowed him to play with injury. Similar to Steve Waugh in the Adelaide cricket Test.

Ablett was a great player - a freak.
However he performed best under favourable rather than adverse conditions.

I might not be as old as some of you, but I've been watching footy all my life. I watch it every chance I get and love it.

There is absoloutely no doubt that Carey is the best ever. Noone had the presence Carey has and noone will ever have the ability he does. Carey is like the 'god' of football, if he puts his mind to it, he can do just about anything, and you can't say that about a lot of players. Also, Carey has the ability to play in just about any position on the field. Can Ablett play CHB or in the midfield as well as Carey??

He's so versatile, if there's a problem in the backline or somewhere else on the ground, Carey will go down and the problem will more than likely be fixed. The problem is finding the best place to use him!

Also, how many times has Carey been beaten? Very, very rarely. And when he is beaten it only seems that way because he isn't playing like the like the 'unbeatable' player we expect.

BIG POPPA PUMPed out the following:

Ablett made his name as a wingman/half-forward and only went to full-forward full-time after he'd turned 31!

I'm not disputing Carey's talents, but you're selling Ablett well short.

Glen Jakovich is one player that seems to have the better of him, probably just a mental thing, but how many others has Carey dominated? Some of the games Carey's played on Jakovich haven't been that bad anyway, it's just that we expect him to slaughter Jakovich because of the way he beats other opponents. We bag him for the slightest things and fail to notice the great things he does on the field because of how good he is.

Ablett was a great player, he was a champion, but he wasn't as well rounded as Carey. I know Ablett played as a half forward/winger but
he could never have been thrown into the backline when needed or play as a ball winning ruck rover. When needed Carey can be thrown into the middle and you'd be nearly guaranteed a centre clearance at a crucial point in the game. Carey can control the whole ground like a general, I doubt if Ablett could do the same.

I think it's fair to say SOS has had the wood on the Duck over the years as well.

Also, regarding Ablett playing in the midfield, you have to remember the talent Geelong already had in that department in the days Gary could play further up the ground: Bews, Bairstow, Couch, Hocking, Bruns and co were a fairly formidable group to try and counter in their own right, so Ablett was used more frequently on the forward line.

If you do want proof that Gary could play in the middle, get your hands on a vid of his 150th game when he racked up a lazy 36 possies and 5 goals against the Eags at Subi in 1992.

Three guesses who I vote for.
I have been watching, involved in football, for 40 years,(I don't count any time up to 15) and I can tell you without any doubt Carey is the best to play the game. I would rank Leigh Mathews, Haydn Bunton and Darell Baldock, in that order, behind Carey.
Before you get excited about how versatile a player Ablett was, ask yourself when he ever lined up at CHB (because he was too injured to play CHF) and got best afield. Ablett was exciting, but not in the same class as an all-round player, and Carey's ability to play injured is amazing.
Supporters of other clubs will inevitably go for one of their own (Frodo/Matera, Joffa/Daicos etc etc), if only because they are sick of Carey ripping them to bits when North play them, but an objective assesment would have Carey on his own.
I do agree that finals have very little to do with the individual, usually.

How can you go past Ablett? Could play in every position (except ruck maybe) Versatile.

James Hird is of a similar ilk, but doesn't have the strength of Ablett.
