There's been plenty of good (better) teams on paper that haven't won SBs. The most successful QB in NFL history goes to a good team and suddenly they win their second franchise SB. I'd say it's a pretty causative effect.

The largest causative component was recruiting Gronk and AB to that line up

The one thing I hate about Brady is his bad sportsmanship. For a person blessed with so much success and awards, he is the saltiest human there has ever been when he loses from time to time. Not shaking hands with opposing QBs, and other such, crying to the refs etc.

Point is though, give Marino et al the defenses, the situations Brady has had, and they all would have just as much success.

I'm not saying lesser QBs have the same success, cos Brady is an excellent QB. But those on the same level, Marino, Manning, Rodgers, Brees with less SB wins would do what he's done. No doubt about it.

One of the most unsung aspects of the 49ers dynasty was their consistently excellent defence. They came up against high-powered in-form offensive machines in their Superbowls. Montana got all the headlines, but it was their defence which laid the foundation for their victories, conceding just 5 touchdowns in 4 games (3 of those in junk time and 1 from a kick return)

Just while we're on the Systom Brady reality check, if he was playing on the Chiefs today and Mahomes was on the Bucs, it would've been 55-3 instead of 31-9.

Most 25 year old QB's should be beating a 43 year old QB.

But they didn't.

Lol. Please, I am sure that THE reasons they give will ALL be the reasons why no one makes that determination that Tom Brady is the greatest based on those things. We already discussed this ad nauseam in the other Brady vs Manning thread.

When deciding the best, you look at them "in a vacuum" as players per se, and how well they would've played under other coaches, with different teams.

All the great players (Brady included) would've excelled in different teams etc. But NOT all in different systems. For instance, Joe Montana was a WCO system QB. He would not have been able to do so well in the Air Coryell. Brady could excel at both tho. Elway, Kelly, Marino, etc, could all have excelled in different systems.

What ends up happening is among all the truly great QBs, people are nitpicking over this or that little thing when trying to put them in some kind of rank. They are all equally great -- as players per se.

Super Bowls are won by teams, it's a team effort.

Barry Sanders is the greatest RB ever and he only played a couple playoffs and never won a Super Bowl. Emmitt Smith was a great RB, durable, etc. But he's not the greatest because he won 3 SBs. On pure talent/ability alone, in a vacuum. The eye test.

Marino is the single greatest QB ever, thruout all the eras of football. No one comes close. Not a single one. The rest, all the true greats, like Brady, Manning, Elway, Staubuch, Starr, Unitas, etc etc....they're all ranked anywhere from 2 down. No one approaches Marino for consummate QB ability, like no one approaches Sanders for consummate RB ability. Or Rice for consummate WR ability.
