I reckon this is the best list and coaching staff since 1994.

Cotchin, Lids, Martin and Jack are the core of our team
Rance, Grigg, Houli Maric and Foley represent the support cast
Grimes, Vickery, Conca and batch are the emerging players
With a decent list of solid citizens in King, Tuck, Miller, Newman and co we have a good crop of players, a very capable coaching panel, an enjoyable game plan to watch and an incredible passion and energy for playing with purpose and mutual commitment which is gold in team sport.

I only question our list depth.

Great start boys, I'm looking forward to the ride.

Yeah it's hard not to get excited. And this time management is much more stable, so hopefully we don't self-destruct like we did back then.

I try not to get to excited. The old ticker may not be able to take it!

Oh stuff it, I can always have one of those implantable defibrillators put in!

Go Tiges!

Agree Mhill - my memory of '94 is that we started to mix it with the better teams and won a couple of close ones. The appetite for the contest and the back line run are exciting. When posters were slotting Steven Morris into our best side at the end of last year and talking of freeing up Deledio, I thought they were being pretty optimistic but it has been a big factor. This week will tell us whether we can hold the quick small forwards. Wonder how many games we need to win for Cotch to win the Brownlow.

Having guys like White, Graham, Mcguane and Connors running around for Coburg this year when 2 years ago they were walk up starts is the most obvious sign we're headed in the right direction.

to be fair we wouldn't have to have much of a side to beat where we were in 94:eek:

I like it though how we are starting to play some consistent footy and the guys really seem to have an understanding of the role they play and seem to have confidence to execute it. Our fwd line just hasn't functioned this year with a few out of form players down there but if that clicks soon then look out:thumbsu:

Actually, 94 was a sensational year. We were struggling along, and then suddenly from about Rd 14, we put together a run of 6 straight wins - against OK opposition as well. We eventually finished 9th (of course), despite winning 12 of 22 games (more than half) - we finished 9th of 15. To give you an example of how things go against us, the following year Brisbane finished 8th winning 10.5 games - less than half.

We followed up 94 with a leap into the top 4 in 95, won the sensational semi against Essendon, and looked set for a good period.

Then Mal Brown poked his head up and Northey left......

Agree there are some good signs. I haven't been this optimistic about our future for many years.

Just hoping they don't force Hardwick to walk like they did with Northey... That's the only thing that could really stuff us up I think.

It took a long time before I could forgive the club for the Northey debacle...... Hopefully we don't implode like that again.

It's already been mentioned that the organization is more stable this time(thank god). I think the decision to extend Dimma'scontract before round 1 showed enormous maturity for the club (plus it got lids to resign as well). I wasn't in melb in 94 but was there for 95 (ah...memories of that sunny afternoon in sept .... 5 goals down... Good times) .

I'm curious in terms of top shelf quality players how would you compare the current crop to the stars back then?

That 90s team under Northey gave their all.
That team didn't have many superstars just players that gave 200 percent.

I reckon todays team has more upside. Our defense is still very young.

Maxfield,Naish,Tape,Michael and Benny Gale,Scotty Turner,Matty Rogers,Greg Dear,Paul Bullus,Richo(injured most of 95),Bondy,Charles,Howatt,Campbo,Knighta,Neeld,Bower,Daffy ,Jurica and the others?

That list was all about team ethic and club pride.

Let's hope our cubs bottle that this Satdy Night.

My memories shot but I remember a cold wet day at Princes park last game of the season against the Cats, we had to win or needed Sydney to win and we would have made the finals? Is this how it happened or am I hallucinating...

Correct, we lost by about 13 goals and then the Ox kicked 10 the next day for Melb at the SCG and we were done!! But the year after.....well that was one of few 'good' years I can remember...

Northey walked with a year to go. We handled it poorly but that is a fact.
Players were selfish through the 90's but had talent.
We should've played many more years in the finals.

It appears as though the above issues are not in the current crop of on or off field

This era should deliver consecutive finals.

Don't think he said that, just listed the players in the team. Not too many superstars like he mentioned, but just a tough, hard working, willing team from what I remember.

We had a draw against the Bombers in '95. It was a ripper. I remember (I was 7) listening to it on the radio. Was a great match.

Whoever's playing Carlton.

I'd hope this group will be considerably better than the '94 group, because I don't know about the rest of you, but the thought of falling one match short of a grand final next year followed by another six years without finals doesn't really excite me a great deal.

Yep have talked of that game before, we came from the clappers to draw within 9 points after a brilliant daffy snap....fair dinkum the old stand, full house was shuddering....alas the Cats kicked the next 4 or. 5 and ran out winners:eek:
