The title says it all, im not sure if this has been done before but name the best Swans team that you've seen in all the time you have watched AFL/VFL.

A couple rules to keep it interesting

- Name the year you went to your first game.
- 22 players, 4 on bench
- You can have one midfielder in the backilne and one in the forward line if you like, otherwise players must be named in their positions. (ie I have Gerard Healy in the backilne and Stevie Wright up forward as resting rover)
- You must have 2 ruckman! If you are old school, like myself, you can name the resting ruck man as a back/forward pocket, but otherwise the bench is fine.
- The player must have played at least 50 games for the Bloods, so no Paul Chambers
- Name a captain and vice captain

1984. That's a good team Thuggee, but I'd make some changes. Jude Bolton to replace Barry Mitchell. Also Lewis Jetta replaces David Murphy. Craig Bolton moves to fullback, displacing Rod Carter. Leo Barry moves to the vacated back pocket. LRT comes in on the bench (yes LRT). And Mummy, you are very unlucky, but your career isn't over yet.

This is a tough one. I have followed the Swans for over 50 years and in that time have seen many good footballers
but few good teams until recent years. As time goes on you tend to forget some players but some stick in your memory
forever such as skilton, bedford, kelly, williams & healy

Here is my best I've seen

B: Jarrad Crouch, Ted Richards, Leo barry
HB: Denis Carroll, Paul Roos, Mark Browning
C: Gerrard Healy, Greg Williams, Mark Bayes
HF: Ryan O'Keefe, Graeme Teasdale, Paul Kelly
F: Michael O'loughlin, Tony Lockett, Peter Bedford
R; Darren Jolly, Adam Goodes, Bob Skilton
IC: Josh Kennedy, Jason Ball, Brett Kirk, Lewis Jetta

There are 12 brownlows shared in that side by my counting

II probably saw my first Swans game around 1964

Good to discover that not everyone on BF is a spotty-faced 13-year old know-all.

I hope you don't mind me discussing your team without doing my own Im being lazy.., Tilt is very lucky not to get the nod before Ted at fullback, even Bolton has the runs on the board. I would strongly disagree about Jolly, Round has him covered and the one that really caught my eye was Teasdale.. He also won the best and fairest anda Brownlow playing in the ruck..maybe Jason Ball could fill both their water bottles and we could slide Barry Hall in at CHF?.Maybe Rhys Jones over Kennedy(for now) as a Ruck Rover also Lewis Jetta very lucky also being your age but I do like him. Cheers mate, no offence meant.

Teasdale and over Hall is a very big call! Hall was a genuine Top 5 player for 3 consecutive seasons, not sure Teasdale ever had that level of impact, but he did have an outstanding Brownlow season (from all reports). TD is also a massive call. He must have been amazing in the 19 games (mind you he doesn't make the 50 game criteria)

TD is in the best i saw thank you and Hall along with the doped up Eagles cost us the 06 flag with shit kicking. Teaser would also do some rucking up forward.
However i've been following for a long time and thats my best and who says it has to be a 50 game criteria

Teaser won our b&f when thrown into the ruck and the brownlow, he wasn't a traditional ruckman but got results. Hall is being underrated and fwiw, read the op again re the 50 game criteria lol

Jesus I really wanted to get LRT into that side but couldn't fit him.
Would of also liked to have selected Roo's as a starting player but can't remember enough of him... I remember Schwass, Lockett, Kelly and young MOL very well though...

Sorry to start the thread and run off guys/gals, I've been staying in the Otways for the last few days and have been out of range, some great teams here, seeing Skilton's name in a few teams sends shivers down the spine - I guess I'm not that old school after all lol.

I've heard Max Papley's name mentioned in the past but I don't know much about him, can anyone tell us what sort of player he was?

He was our centreman before Peter Bedford, Max was an absolute star in the VFA for Moorabbin before finishing his career at Williamstown. He played 59 games for South and kicked 66 goals from the centre, at Moorabbin he was their Full Forward where he kicked bags of goals. In 66 he won the B&F and the following year he played for Victoria, then he turned his back on the VFL to captain-coach Willy. From what i believe having a young family was a big factor, as the money from Willy was too good to refuse. When Max finished there he moved to Bunyip and coached them for many years, he was a great coach , so far ahead of his time and the players loved him and i know that cause i played under him. Bunyip is also the Mummy's home town.
Great player for South and if he'd stayed we might have won that final in 70

Great post old fella, also worth noting that in Skiltons 11 years he won 9 b&f's,(AFL/VFL record equalled with only one other, Murray from the Roys I think?) two of those years he was only beaten for it by the great Frank Johnston from the mighty Borough, genuine superstar that came to us a bit late and Max Papley who left us too soon, as you say we would have had much more success if he stayed on with Skilts, and even Bedford what a trio that would have been. When Papley left to Willy in his first 3yrs he got them to 3 2nd division Grand Finals. Also he was recently selected as a centreman in Willys team of the century.
