The best thing about 1999 - 2000 for me.

By a mile: Carlton taking a recruiting gamble, going for established talent rather than developing their own, and very, very close to stealing a flag - finishing 2nd and 3rd, and in any other year would have been raging favourite in 2000. Now they've come away with nothing (not even a night flag), have lost their dominance of the premiership aggregate, have lost/ are losing star players left right and centre and face the prospect of some time in the middle of the table.

For me that is just the icing on the cake. No offence Julia, I'm sure you'd be saying the same if the table were turned.

Regards
Dutchy

PS. As for Essendon, don't know about you other fans but I'm still just feeling relief rather than elation (much like many of my Carlton mates said they felt at the end of 1995).

Not too harp on it Dutchman, because we've been over it before but :

If the premiership was decided for finishing on top, AND we also won the GF (hence we did the double), we would be feeling both joy and relief.

As it is now, we just feel relief. Your post is a GREAT example of how a premiership can bring only relief (as opposed to joy), because the team in question was already so superior, but they were forced to win ONE match to make it official. Unofficially, we were the best long, long, long before the Granny in 2000. KIt's shame that our 21 H&A wins meant nothing. What a tragedy that 21 out of 22 means nothing. It saddens me actually.

Anyway, the highlight for me was winning 43 of 49 games over 1999-2000. Although Carltons stuff ups are fantastic as you mentioned.

Sorry Dan but you said *Not too harp on it Dutchman, because we've been over it before but*

Dan YOU ALWAYS HARP ON IT!!! Please please dont start apologising for it now :p

Dutch glad you ended the season well, many of us feel the same toward Carlscums impending doom. Like the fall of Rome (Elliot fiddles while optarse burns, wouldnt it be cool) decadence leads to decay.

Grendel,

You're right.I shouldn't apologise for it. And I won't. I'm not sorry for bringing it up. Why would I apologise for somthng which is so obviously the "right" way to go. Have a llok at Dutchmans post and you can see for yourself.

Relief, not joy. That's how Essendon feel at the moment. OK, of course there a bit of joy, but it's "mainly" relief.

I want joy damn it.

Dan... it was relief... because they did not choke again... and in the process proved they were the best of 2000...

remember Dan... "the essence of sport is winning when it matters"... I love that sentence

Rooboy there is that word choke again. How many PF's have North been in and gone on to the GF's and won? The times they failed did they choke? If not why is Essendons close losses chokes but as someone else said anybody else losses are gallant defeats. Please explain.

Go Footy... you may not understand that I am not as biassed as what you may think... in 1999 the Dons Choked BIG TIME... in 1998 North choked 2.17 to one end in a Grand Final... should have been 10 goals up at half time...

Neither of these teams got beat...

They beat themselves... CHOKED

Once again, Dan hijacks someone elses thread to bleat his rubbish again.

He is Peter Hoare - SERIAL PEST!

I felt the same way after '96 and '99....sheer relief. In '96 it was because I was certain that it would be the only chance I'd ever get to see North win a flag in my lifetime and in '99, it was a case of redemption for '98. In the end though, you'll sit back and just realise how great Essendon's achievement was and the enjoyment will come.

As for Dan24, not content with telling us how the AFL champion should be decided, he's now moved into telling us how we should feel when someone's team wins the premiership

Shinboners,

I'm not telling you how to feel.

I'm telling you how you WOULD feel, if the season was structured correctly.

Oh and Rooboy, if a team chokes (even though choking is impossible with 18 athletes all playing at the same time), under MY system they won't win the Grand Final.

If you don't win on the day, you won't be the Grand Final winner.

So, what the 'f*ck are you comlaing about ? The Grand Final is there under my system and if you don't perform, you won't win it.

But quite sensibly, you can ALSO win the Home and away premiership, and it doens't render 22 weeks meaningless. It makes it worthwhile for you and Shins and Dutch to go to the footy each week, because the matches would mean something.

Heaven forbid.

Rooboy, you said this : "Dan... it was relief... because they did not choke again... and in the process proved they were the best of 2000"

I suppose Carlton courageous 1999 preliminary final win PROVED they were the leagues second best team did it ? Puh-lease. Carlton supporters know themselves that they were only the 5th or 6th best. Upsets happen, and they can happen in a final. The best team is never "immune" from getting beaten.

You act as though upsets don't happen in finals. You act as though the best team always win a finals match. Well, I've got news for you. The best team doesn't always win. Upsets happen. If the best team always won, the top team would go 22-0 every year.

You wanna what relief is?? Seeing Carlton win last year against the Bummers in the PF.

True or not.

Yeah, good comeback Rooboy (sarcastically)

Just admit it..... I've got a good point. Not that I need to be told. I take your meek response as a moral victory......yet again.

Unfortunately you will respond just for the sake of it, for your own "pride", rather than any argumentative reason. You are obviously a very pround person, but my system has a logical (yes logical) counterargument for anything you, and others disagree with.

You can try me if you want, but it will be waste of time. Unless I believed in it wholeheartedly, i wouldn't argue it so fervently.

On behalf of my species, I declare that we are vermin, NOT - Pests!

We do not wish to be associated with Dan24.

Yes, History? can it be changed? NO Please again stop with this crap Start a Non Essendon Topic that anyone is interersted in.

Dare ya.

Ok, we'll stop.

But as for "history" Rooboy, history says that "top spot" was the traditional way in Australian Rules football.

Don't have a go at me, I'm just satting a fact.

Ok, then....case closed.
