By a mile: Carlton taking a recruiting gamble, going for established talent rather than developing their own, and very, very close to stealing a flag - finishing 2nd and 3rd, and in any other year would have been raging favourite in 2000. Now they've come away with nothing (not even a night flag), have lost their dominance of the premiership aggregate, have lost/ are losing star players left right and centre and face the prospect of some time in the middle of the table.
For me that is just the icing on the cake. No offence Julia, I'm sure you'd be saying the same if the table were turned.

PS. As for Essendon, don't know about you other fans but I'm still just feeling relief rather than elation (much like many of my Carlton mates said they felt at the end of 1995).
