Mentioning dropped points to Birmingham, Reading, Wigan etc last season is just pointless. The other big 4 teams also dropped points in places they shouldnt, Utd being a prime example dropping all 6 to City.
A bit rich comparing City to Birmingham, Reading, Wigan etc. I would have thought you would know that well enough having dropped points to us as well last season.

I could dig out the stats, but to be honest you don't want to know. So just like we did last year I'll leave you in the belief that you're club is closer to the title than they really are. We'll see where we are at the end of the year (usually by about December, and then February after a brief resurgence gives scousers hope again)

I'll have to say that attitudes like yours make me hope someone like Villa do give you a wakeup call. Cause it's arrogant in the extreme for a Liverpool supporter to totally dismiss the likes of Villa as competition.

Referring of course to the dropped points last season.

Champions don't drop 9 points to 2 relegated teams and one that came extremely close to it (2 points to a probably relegation side dropped already this season). You obviously want to win your games against the top teams but in my mind, this is the more important problem for Liverpool to fix.

And you misunderstand the point I was trying to make. I certainly wouldn't be dismissing Wigan, Birmingham and Reading as competition for us (we dropped more than our share of points to them ourselves) but losing matches to a side around top 7 or 8 (and we were probably only a point or two away from Liverpool for each of the derby wins) is more palatable than dropping points to clubs at the foot of the table.

It really isn't. Our biggest problem is our appalling performances in the 6 point games. That isn't to say we don't have a problem against lower sides, but if you look at our record against the Big 3 under Rafa, it really is pretty damn piss poor compare to the efforts against so called relegation sides

TBH we have a problem in both those areas, but even the Big 3 will drop points against sides they are expected to beat, it happens every season. If we're 30 points from the leaders like we used to be a couple of seasons ago then yeah, I'd agree with you, games against lower sides, but our gap now isn't even half of that. From then on it's just our record in the 6 point games. Although if we keep playing football like it's some of defensive fortress game at Helms Deep like we did against villa, then we have no hope

Rumour is Liverpool will make a swoop for Gareth Bale and Aaron Lennon during the transfer window

Bale to replace the often injured Dossena
Lennon for the right wing to give some balance after we finally got a left winger in Riera

That wouldn't be too bad. Gives us something in both areas we need it.

Is it just me, or are teams clearly getting ready for the 4 + 5 rule, or what ever it is. Buying Bale and Lennon gives us two extra in that department.

How much do you think that will cost? Bale by himself will be about 10m IMO. Not sure about Lennon. They would be to good young signings though.

Has anyone seen pictures from the Crewe match. Apparently Torres got a haircut. Now i don't know about you people, but i remember reading articles about Torres, and how he is a very superstious person. I remember him saying things like, "if i was standing on the bus on the way to a game, and then i score a hatrick, then i will stand in the bus for the next game." I also remember reading something similar about his hair, and when he cuts it.

So Torres got a haircut, maybe he thinks he is out for form. Down on a little confidence. He didn't really look that great against Stoke. Very Rusty. But I'm sure he'll pick up the scoring soon.

I know it's a petty thing but i just remember the article.

Degan suffers Injurt Blow

http://www.liverpoolfc.tv/news/drilldown/N161429080923-2222.htm

Geez, pretty unlucky for the guy. Was there any broadcasts at all of this match?
The hot word is he was pretty pathetic for his first turn out but it was just that, his first turn out.

Hopefully he gets back and ajusts to the pace and physicality of english football and can produce some solid displays.

Most of his passes vs. Crewe were hospital balls and give aways and looked too fast for his own good at times by over running the ball.

Personally I would really like to see Darby get a gig at some stage because he impressed me quite a bit during preseason (well from what I could see on a feed) and have heard glowing reports

Mate, you dont even want to know the inner demons I struggle with. To tell you the truth, Villa and City scare the shit out of me. I cant imagine my beloved LFC not being a power in English football but the way things are going, it really is something that could happen. With City's newfound money and the fantastic signing of Robinho, you know other big signing's will arrive.

While that doesnt automatically mean success, Chelsea seemed to have done alright so why cant City. Utd are Utd. I dont even think their squad is that good, their midfield bar Ronaldo is very average but for some reason, they just flat out WIN. Arsenal's kids make them impossible to go backwards. Imagine Wilshere, Vela, Ramsey all coming through the next few years. They wont go backwards.

Villa are going from strength to strength and with the Barry saga, it's proving that Villa are becoming a buying club, not a selling one. Which means they should hold onto guys like Young and Agbonlahor etc. They are a very good side.

But! Im a Liverpool fan and obviously I believe in my team and the squad Rafa has built. Pound for pound were right their with the other big 3 talent wise. Torres is the best striker in England. Better than Drogba, Rooney, Berbatov, Adebayor etc Gerrard IMO is better than Lampard, Essien, Cesc, and pick any of Utd's midfielders (barring freako portugese fag). I strongly believe that Mascherano is the best defensive midfielder in England, perhaps the world. Our defence is rock solid, Carragher, Skrtel and Agger compare well to Terry/Carvalho and Rio/Vidic and Reina is better than VDS and Almunia.

But for some reason that nobody can seem to explain. We just cant put it together. Perhaps it's a belief thing? Chelsea, Arsenal and Utd have all won titles recently, Liverpool havent in a long, long time. Perhaps with the way football is going, particularly in England that IMO it is far more difficult now to win the league than it ever has been. How do you compete with Chelsea. I mean their RB costs more than any player on our team bar Torres and Keane I think??

Our strongest midfield of Gerrard, Alonso and Masch is as good as any. But after that, our squad just doesnt compete. Chelsea after their strongest three in Lampard, Deco and Essien, then have the likes of Ballack, Obi Mikel, Malouda, J.Cole. It is extremely difficult to beat that kind of talent.

Im not making excuses either, I do believe that Rafa has built a squad capable of challenging. Will it be difficult? God yes. Will it be far more difficult than 5 or 10 years ago? Definitely.

Am I more scared of being caught by those chasing us, than us actually catching those we are chasing? Yes. But if I didnt belief and I didnt support, then what kind of Liverpool fan would I be?

As of right now, were ahead of City, Villa and Utd strangely enough. Were even on points with Chelsea and just 1 point behind Arsenal. As of right now, were in the title race. If were still in it come January then it's a step forward. Right now im taking it game by game.

But if for one second you think im some kind of arrogant supporter who thinks we deserve to finish top 4 every season just because we are LFC then you are very much mistaken. Trust me, I have one eye on Arse, Chelsea and Utd and the other eye firmly fixed on the likes of Villa and City. I hope that Rafa is the same.

Do you mean the often injured Aurelio? No Dossena?

Either way I dont want to buy a LB. If we want to buy English to accomodate the rule that might be coming in, then buy an English RB. GIVE INSUA A CHANCE RAFA!

Lennon is a bit lightweight isnt he? If Riera settles on the left, where to for Babel. We buy Lennon, will Babel be third in line behind the much loved Kuyt and then Lennon?

4-4-2 isnt working either. Must go back to 4-2-3-1.

oops yep i meant Aurelio is injured often

Kuyt keeps dropping hints he wants to go to Germany, so who are we to get in his way if he wants to go ;)

As for Babel he may have to play the role of super sub for a bit longer

We will always be Liverpool and at the moment we are THE MOST SUCCESSFUL CLUB IN ENGLAND. No one bar Manchester United is even slightly close

We could get some very good news in the next year or so aswell, I don't think it's a matter of if Sheihk Mo will buy us, but when.

To the best of my knowledge when the move was being talked about out of respect he said he would love to one day play for Martin Jol in Hamburg but he is very happy in Liverpool.

and why wouldn't he be, He is after all Rafa's lovechild!

Your right you dont. But to think were not far closer to challenging than we were when Rafa took over is simply not true. And im not saying you dont believe us to be closer. You certainly dont seem to think we are a chance though.

In 04/05, Rafa's first year, we actually finished 5th and qualified for Europe thanks to Rafa taking us to glory in Europe. Chelsea won the league that season with 95 point, we had a 17.7.14 record for 58 measly points. Horrible stuff. 14 losses! 37!!! points off winning the league.

Last season we went 21.13.4 for 76 points and finished 11 points behind United. I think we are much closer, obviously the record shows that but IMO it's more about the quality that Rafa has brought to the club that can hopefully make us genuine challengers.

Look at the squad that finished 37 points behind Chelsea, yet won the European cup?? in 04/05. In order of talent. Then look at the squad now which i will list next to them.

GKers
Dudek - Reina
Carson - Diego
Kirkland - Gulacsi
Luzi - Hansen

Defenders
Carragher - Carragher
Hyypia - Agger
Finnan - Skrtel
Riise - Arbeloa
Warnock - Hyypia
Traore - Dossena
Josemi - Aurelio
Raven - Degen
Whitbread - Insua
Pellegrino - Darby
Otsemobor - San Jose

Midfielders
Gerrard - Gerrard
Alonso - Mascherano
Hamman - Alonso
Garcia - Riera
Kewell - Babel
Smicer - Lucas
Biscan - Benayoun
Nunez - Plessis
Welsh - El Zhar
Partridge - Pennant

Forwards
Cisse - Torres
Baros - Kuyt
Morientes - Keane
Sinama Pongolle - N'Gog
Mellor - Nemeth
LeTallec - Pacheco

I mean that is actually pretty thread bare. First 11 is ok but after that it drops away terribly. The squad now, is FAR better IMO. Would you not agree?

Kuyt is going nowhere. He is Rafa's favourite player. Despite his lack of goals, he is actually a really good player.
