I have never claimed to be Kuyts biggest fan, especially against a weaker side where you need a bit of finesse to break thru their defense.

but against talented side who tend to play around with the ball at the back and get fancy his constant harassment breaks them down and creates loose balls, loose balls that usually end at Torres's feet and well, last year that usually meant the back of the net.

I have massive question marks over Keanes importance but Kuyt has a place and he is head and shoulders above his form last year this time round.

I mean that is actually pretty thread bare. First 11 is ok but after that it drops away terribly. The squad now, is FAR better IMO. Would you not agree?
The squad is better, but the problem is that so is Chelseas and Man United, and Arsenals, and Villas, and Man City's (maybe not Evertons).

For me, you're relying on Robbie Keane returning to form, and Torres getting back to last years form to improve from last years performances. Everyone else mentioned is moving forward, I'm not so sure about Liverpool. Certainly not the way they're playing at the moment.

if for one second you think im some kind of arrogant supporter who thinks we deserve to finish top 4 every season just because we are LFC then you are very much mistaken. Trust me, I have one eye on Arse, Chelsea and Utd and the other eye firmly fixed on the likes of Villa and City. I hope that Rafa is the same.
Fair enough, that (And the stuff in the rest of that post) made a lot more sense, and it's good to see that you do at least recognise the threat from other teams. Liverpool still are favourites for top 4, but I can see Villa in particular giving your Arsenals and Liverpools a real push. City's time (if it comes) is at least a year or two away, but who knows if we can hang onto the coattails of the top 4 up until January.

In 04/05, Rafa's first year, we actually finished 5th and qualified for Europe thanks to Rafa taking us to glory in Europe. Chelsea won the league that season with 95 point, we had a 17.7.14 record for 58 measly points. Horrible stuff. 14 losses! 37!!! points off winning the league.

Last season we went 21.13.4 for 76 points and finished 11 points behind United. I think we are much closer, obviously the record shows that but IMO it's more about the quality that Rafa has brought to the club that can hopefully make us genuine challengers....
Good post...

Though IMO it isnt the fact that you guys are closing in on Chelsea, but the 5th-10th teams are closing in on the top 4. Look at how many wins you guys have had, and improvement of only 4 wins for those two seasons. Now, while this is a step in the right direction, I would be a lot more worried at the moment about Aston Villa and Man City etc... then United or Chelsea. If you are 1 point off the lead come January, then I would begin looking at United/Chelsea/Arsenal.

Your depth has improved the last 3 years, but it still isnt anywhere near the likes of United's or Chelsea's. And while some of your kids are good, they arent anywhere near the Wilshere's, Ramseys, Vela's etc... of the Arse...

While LFC have improved this season, IMO the jury is still out till January in regards to being a title contender, rather then pretender...

Page 200 for me.

As for the post about us only improving by 4 wins over those seasons, I think it's more of a point about not losing as many games. We lost 14 times in our UCL winning season, last season we only lost 4 times. So if you take away those 10 losses, it gives us (at least) an extra 10 points (depending on whether those became wins or draws), now if we could only consistently turn draws into wins, which is the next step (e.g STOKE at ANFIELD). We have a much better squad now, with more world class players, it's coming along nicely, yes City and Villa are closing in, but I think we're closing in on the top 3 (as you can see, we're equal with Chelsea and ahead of Utd).

Once we sort out being held scoreless at home against the lower table teams who park the bus we'll be well on our way, we've always been competitive against Chelsea and Arsenal picking up the odd point here or there but it's been against Utd were we have turned to crap, this season could be different. One week at a time and it'll be interesting to see who City decide to buy in Jan (if they dip back into the market, probably will depend on where they are in the league at that stage). They could very well catch us and I think that Liverpool really should be trying to weaken Villa by buying Ashley Young, yes they'll want an arm and a leg for him, but we should look at it as a) we're infinitely strengthening our team with a young English talent who could be anything in the future and b) severly weakening one of the chasing packs team who could catch us if things go right for them and wrong for us.

What exactly makes him a 'very good player'?
His workrate, his movement off the ball, his tackling and defending from the front, his passing is simple and he doesnt try to be Alonso, he does cross the ball very well when given the space. He scores important goals.

He's in great form at the moment. He isnt world class but he is a very good player and you can see why managers love him.

Yeah, obviously everyone's squad is improving but we have really addressed some big problems. We lack width, we buy Riera. We have lacked an real class forward since Owen left. Torres. Slowly but surely, we are trying to eliminate our weaknesses.

We just have to hope we are good enough to compete which I think we are if we can find our best form. Your right, we are relying on Keane and Torres to find form and work together but Chelsea are relying on Drogba and Lampard to play well. United are relying on Ronaldo and Rooney to score and Berbatov to fit in. etc etc... All teams rely on players because they are our best players so of course you rely on them.

If we find our form and Keane fits in, I really do believe we can mount a title challenge but who really knows? You can only really take it one match at a time. Chelsea are awesome, Arsenal always around the mark. Utd are dominant and Villa are ever improving. City will come.

Where do we fit in? Who knows. All we can do is watch and support and hope and dream.

I think were favourite for top 4 aswell. Villa may push us but im not sure they are quite good enough for a full season of consistent results. City's time is closer than you think, Chelsea found money and pretty much instant success. I wouldnt be surprised at all if City push all the way next season and either win the league or go very close. You have A LOT of money.

You right about 5th to 10th closing the gap. It's the Premier League as a whole that has become the best league in the world so all the stars are arriving on english shores. Not every big player in the world can play for thte top 4. So players of the ilk of Pavluchenko, Modric and Dos Santos go to Tottenham. Robinho finds a home at City. Santa Cruz at Blackburn... the list goes on.

If the Premier League continues like this I think in seasons to come it wont be weird to see Liverpool or even United missing out on a top 4 spot. Or teams like City, Tottenham and Villa becoming league champions or the top 7 or 8 wildly changing from year to year. No more Chelsea, Chelsea, United, United, Arsenal, Chelsea, United, Chelsea, United, Arsenal.

I think it could be a very different ball game in the next few years. It's actually kinda exciting. I just hope were good enough to get amongst it.

I've been better, until some people hi-jacked the Liverpool thread and made up 10k posts. But it's okay because we have a mod on the boards as a fan, he'll delete them and re-align the planets

Ash told us to.

We get restless sometimes at night, none of us of social lives so this is our crowning glory.

Take it easy DC, and enjoy the grand final champ. :thumbsu:

I know the blues didn't make it but you're probably used to that by now. ;)
