Yeah it's going to be interesting to see what Rafa does with the three of them. Gerrard and Alonso pick themselves and now Sissoko is going so well that I wouldnt want to start a match without him in midfield. Yet all three are central midfielders so we may very well be playing a lot of 4-5-1 this season.

with Sissoko's brilliant form, we need to fit in all of Alonso, Gerrard and Sissoko in the starting line up, so this means we will be playing 4-5-1 for the whole season? unless Gerrard plays on the right again, then we can have two strikers up front.
I think this season Rafa is going to chop and change the team a lot depending on the opposition as well as the formation.

Momo Sissoko has given him a good selection problem as we are a much better outfit when he is out there. He gives Gerrard and Alonso a lot more freedom. I think Gerrard will alternate between central midfield and the right flank as well as being rested along the way to keep him fresh.

It wasnt so long ago that someone was questioning our midfield depth ?

There's no definite starting XI in Rafa's mind.

Some games Gerrard will play on the right and some games he'll rest one of Momo or Xabi and play Gerrard in the middle and Pennant out right.

Every player in the club has accepted that from Rafa, there will be ****stirring journos who'll keep going on about how upset Gerrard would be for not starting but **** them

Yup spot on. To achieve what we want the whole squad is going to have to work as a team and i think everyone has accepted that.

Scott Carson has been put on loan for the year to Charlton.

That means Dudek is going to be the number 2 goalie or that Rafa is in the market for another young keeper.

We've got David Martin to be third choice keeper, so we're not exactly wanting in the keeper department at the moment. Dudek seems happy to stay around for this season as Reina's number two.

Gonzalez scored in a 2-1 win over Lincoln and Mellor was back. Robbie Fowler played a lively 45 minutes by all accounts. Aurellio played as well.

Things looking nicely on track at the moment.

2 goals for Crouch for England as well. On fire the lad.:D

Liverpool agree £10m deal to sign Kuyt
By Jason Burt
Published: 17 August 2006

Liverpool's long pursuit of the Feyenoord striker Dirk Kuyt appears certain
to end in success in the next couple of days with the two clubs likely to
agree a £10m fee.

Talks have intensified over the past 48 hours after Kuyt, who was last night
due to appear for the Netherlands in their friendly against the Republic of
Ireland in Dublin, again told Feyenoord that he wanted to move to Anfield.

Indeed sources in the Dutch national squad indicated last night that they
expected Kuyt to fly to England later today to discuss terms and is likely
to be a Liverpool player in time for Saturday's opening Premiership match
away to Sheffield United.

The stumbling block, for some time, has been the asking price with Liverpool
loath to pay more than £8m for the 26-year-old. Liverpool have offered
players - particularly Jan Kromkamp - plus cash and have tried to negotiate
a staggered deal on payments but the Dutch have attempted to hold out.

A problem for Feyenoord is that few other clubs have registered an interest
in the player despite the fact that he scored 22 goals last season, taking
his total to 71 in 101 league games since he moved to Rotterdam three years
ago. However Kuyt suffered a poor World Cup.

He had hoped to move to the Premiership last summer, and was strongly
pursued by Tottenham Hotspur, but decided to wait another season while
Liverpool's only serious challengers have been Newcastle United.

Their manager Glenn Roeder and chairman Freddie Shepherd flew into Dublin
last night in the hope of watching Kuyt but their interest has not been as
strong as Liverpool's who also have the bonus of, hopefully, offering
Champions' League football.

Newcastle also chartered the 10-seat private jet so that they could take
their players from the Irish squad straight back to Tyneside after the
match. Originally there were four players but following the withdrawals of
Damien Duff and Shay Given only Stephen Carr and Alan O'Brien were due to be
on the flight.

Meanwhile, Jose Mourinho thinks he is the "Special One" but John Toshack
believes that title should be attributed to the manager at Anfield Rafael
Benitez.

The Wales coach, an Anfield hero in the Bill Shankly era, had an input into
Benitez's early career when managing Real Madrid and a young Rafa was
working with their youth. Toshack said: "When I first met Rafa there was
definitely something about him. I remember when I was at Madrid the second
time around and we were in Switzerland pre-season.

"He was over watching the training and was making notes. He was always a
very studious type. I think his Valencia side that played Liverpool a couple
of times was very impressive.

"I saw the game at Anfield and they never gave Liverpool any options at all.
That sort of approach, which is common on the continent, maybe prompted
Liverpool to go for him and he hasn't let them down."

He added: "When I first went to Madrid in 1990, Rafa was working with the
youth team. He has worked his way up and did tremendously well to come
through some difficult times at Valladolid and Osasuna.

"He then got Tenerife promoted but was still a bit of a surprise choice when
he first went to Valencia. At the Mestalla he pushed on and was very
successful. He established a very methodical side and once they went 1-0 in
front it was very difficult to get anything back from them. He won the Uefa
Cup with Valencia as well as La Liga and his record since taking charge of
Liverpool speaks for itself."

I forgot the Lincoln City game was even on. Watched the England game and good to see Gerrard and Crouch both in fine touch.

I am going to Sheffield on Saturday (Costs £25 by train which is pricy) even though i dont have a ticket but hopefully one turns up on the day. It is expected to rain all day which could mean more tickets ? Hopefully whatever happens we come away with a win.

As an asied what i read on the teletext service indicated that Kuyt was going to snub Liverpool and choose Newcastle. Therefore i am hoping your report proves to be correct.

Well JLC, the reports coming thru now are that the deal is done for Kuyt. About bloody time. It's on both ours and Feyenoord's websites, quotes and all. Hope for your sake you can get to the game - you could just witness the start of something big. :thumbsu: It seems in the world of football the ugly buggers get the job done (Rooney, Ronaldinho etc) and we've just landed one of the best.

I've been on RAWK.com forum a fair bit lately and they say the 'Kuyt prefers Newcastle' **** was made up by a supporter on NUFC's forum and then picked up by a bunch of lazy journo's who couldn't be arsed doing the research themselves.

Finally it looks like we have secured Kuyt's signature. Pretty happy with that, we needed one more striker and his record in Holland is pretty bloody good. Means nothing coming to a new country and a different style of play but 70 odd in 100 or so games is a great strike rate.

Were set for a huge season! CMON REDS!

g'day fellas
I recently bought Futbol: The Brazillian Way of Life and it's a bloody good read for anyone with even a passing interest in the sport of football... With that in mind, I was hoping some fellow liverpudlians could recommend any books about the L.F.C. There are probably a stack of them on Amazon, but it would be a great help if anyone can help me pick out the cream of bunch.
Cheers,
Brad

Yeah the golden past book is a brilliant read.

There is one titled something along the lines of 'I come from the Spion Kop' and thats a pretty good read as it talks about the old Kop Stand and what it was like etc.

Great news re Kuyt that its finally been done (assuming he passes medical which should be a formailty). I think Rafa must be very content with the squad that he has at his disposal.

Seems apparently we could be in for Lucas Neill if we can offload Jan Kromkamp. Not sure how true it is, maybe one of the boys in England can shed any light on this if there is any speculation over there?

Lucas Neill would be a great buy if he can reproduce his world cup efforts as long as the asking price was right.

Yeah it seems strange that we got Kronkamp yet are eager to offload him? Also appears Pongolle may be sold for around £2,000,000 which is peanuts really but i guess that will help re Kuyt.

Houllier bought the French rejects for a total of 3m i think, so 2m for Pongolle wouldnt be a bad effort.

As for Lucus I can't see him signing, Finnan's performance last season would mean the RB position is his until otherwise proven, while at CB we have 4 players there already. Be very surprised if he didnt sign for a club where he could be a 1st team Centre Half, good ones arent easy to find.

Great news that Kuyt deal went through. Should play in CL qualifier.

Considering we got 2,000,000 pounds for Traore i thought Pongolle would be worth more.

Got a ticket for Sheffield so am pumped. All we need now is the reds to deliver.

dam it how the hell are we going to be a legitimate title contender when we cant even beat a promoted team like sheffield united?thats going to be the difference in us trying to catch up to chelsea, whether we beat the teams we should beat or drop 2 points against lowly ranked sides

A Gerrard dive saved our blushes

Zenden, Robbie and Kromkamp in particular were quite awful. Bellamy and Agger worked hard but that's about it. We probably just deserved the point in the end.

Aurelio's Roberto Carlos-sque marking for their first goal was criminal.
