Reading another posters post in another thread. The question was posed that should we let Judd go to another club for his final few years to gain that 2nd premiership?

I think Judd is amazing and is easily my favorite player. So I begun think. What would life be like as a Carlton supporter if we didn't take Judd and we drafted differently.

Instead to going back to to when we traded away Kennedy, along with picks 3 and 20. I went back to the 2005 draft and went with hindsight.

Below is just a quick list of different picks we could have made. Of course the players may not have blossomed with us for one reason or another. But I quickly realized how scary our team could have been...

Year Player taken. Who we could have drafted
2005. Murphy. pendlebery
Kennedy. Kennedy
Bower. Bernie Vince
Edwards. Andrew Swallow

2006. Gibbs. joel selwood
Hampson. Kurt tippet
Grigg. Alwyn davey
Austin. Todd gold stein
Benjamin. Tyson goldsack
Anderson. Aaron Edwards

2007. Kruezer. Patrick dangerfield
Masten. Cyril rioli
Notte. Scott selwood
Army. Cale hooker

2008. Yarran. Yarran
Warnock trade. Warnock
Robinson. Rory sloane
O'keefe. Shane savage

2009. McLean trade. David menzel
Lucas. Nat fyfe
Davies. Ben Stratton

2010. Watson. Jack darling
Mccarthy. Luke Parker
Mitchell. Alex johnson

B. Stratton. Jamison. Savage
Hb. Goldsack. Henderson. Johnson
C. Fyfe. Dangerfield. Carrazzo
Hf. Menzel. Kennedy. Yarran
F. Rioli. Tippett. Davey
R. Goldstein. J selwood. Pendlebery
Int. Vince. Swallow. Darling. Warnock

Others on the list and could easily get in the 22.
Betts
Bootsma
Buckley
Laidler
Scotland
Simpson
Waite
Walker
Aaron Edwards
Scott selwood
Cale hooker
Luke Parker
Alex Johnson

So, if we drafted differently, our team could resemble something like the above. There maybe list deficiecies and I am open to change and opinion. I just wanted to look back on the hits or possible big misses our club has made.

I've analysed those draft picks and the biggest what if I could come up with was, WHAT IF....we actually went and got the football.

I dont know what Judd is on but it would have to be around the $1.1m per year.
That would free up significant space in your cap to go after 2 quality replacements.
Imagine the two gun players you could get for $550k each.
You desperately need a key forward and key back so i would target Taylor Walker and Tayte Pears or Frawley.
Worth considering.

Mods we can roll of all the shit threads that have been recently started into one big thread, so those of us who don't wish to partake in the wrist slitting can concentrate on the three remaining threads?.

the only one that really upsets me is Gibbs instead of Selwood.

take a moment to imagine our midfield as is with the addition of Selwood.
#firstworldproblems

Fair chance that the Cats wouldn't have gone for Selwood if they had picks one to six. Clubs had medical reports that Selwood's knees weren't in great shape. Think they were interested in Gibbs and Boak who came from Torquay.

Only one that upsets me is not getting a shot at Hawkins for our third round pick.

Who said the Father-Son rule isn't a free kick?

Geelong would have had to use their first pick today.

The only big what if that the Blues should be looking at is what if we packaged up our first round pick and a good young player like a Lucas could we get a CHF. To get something good you have to give up something good and i we need a good second tall. I keep thinking of what the cats gave up for Ottens. Who is there and how can we get them.

Lock the thread.

Moronic hindsight.

FFS.

Next we'll complain that we don't have Collingwood's cleaners.
The one thing I can't stand more than us losing is arrogant know at alls...
Just because I don't dedicate my life to posting on this site 10 times a day because I actually have a life doesn't mean I can't get on here and make an observation.
Too many times I see people say something on this site only to be shot down by some big shot who can type. I have probably been to more games on here than most, and feel that some people here can be very harsh. If you don't like something, shut up and keep it to yourself.
I know a few people will have a go at me for writing this, but they need to learn to grow up.
I made this thread to look back on trade hindsight, not to have FFA and moronic written. Grow up people!:thumbsdown:

Honest question HCJ - what purpose does this thread serve?

You could go through every single club and end up with a dream list at the end of it. Fact is drafting isn't an exact science and nobody is ever going to get it 100% right, 100% of the time. We've done pretty well out of the draft in recent years, all things considered.

Might as well post how rich you'd be if you won every lottery you ever entered into.

Plus you have Alwyn Davey on the field ahead of Betts and Simmo not even in the team.

I have been a great fan of Judd's. Even before he came to Carlton, I thought he was the best player I had seen in over 20 years. No one can shape matches like he can, and it is for this reason that from a selfish viewpoint I would have liked Judd to have been remembered as one of the all-time greats...up there with Matthews, Brereton, Dick Reynolds, Bartlett etc...but at Carlton he isn't going to get the chance to shine on the big stage of the finals....and that is where all these players mentioned below made their reputation.

Matthews - 4 premierships
Reynolds - about the same
Bartlett - 5 premierships
Brereton - 5 premierships

Sure he might play the odd elimination final here or there, but I want to see Judd on grand final day- whichever team it is. We all acknowledge Judd has been fantastic for Carlton - great for membership, lifted Carlton up from 14-16 to 5-8...but if I had a crystal ball I would have preferred him to have played for a team that had the cattle that could have gotten him to grand finals. Just a shame how his career has worked out. That is all. He will protect Carlton from going down the bottom of the ladder, but that isn't the way you want a champion to be remembered.

This this this.

I mean seriously the thread is basically "what if we took who turned out to be the best players at our available pick". Ill tell you the answer. We or whoever had this kind of hind sight would be blood awsome. Is that what you wanted to hear OP?

Pointless looking back at it now. Lets look at how to improve our list in the future.

Of course you can. The improtant thing to remember though, is to try not to make yourself look like a tool whilst posting. This post unfortunately didn't help you in that regard.

I've edited yours to show you another, equally stupid example of what our team could have been.
Below is just a quick list of different picks we could have made. Of course the players may not have blossomed with us for one reason or another. But I quickly realized how scary our team could have been...

Year Player taken. Who we could have drafted
2005. Murphy. beau dowler
Kennedy. jarrod oakleigh-nicholls
Bower. ryan cook
Edwards. travis casserly

2006. Gibbs. scott gumbleton
Hampson. tom hislop
Grigg. albert proud
Austin. tim houlihan
Benjamin. brock o'brien
Anderson. matthew ferguson

2007. Kruezer. cale morton
Masten. no judd + no 7 years of hindsight
Notte. notte
Army. toby thoolen

So, if we drafted differently, our team could resemble something like the above. There maybe list deficiencies (there certainly are) and I am open to change (now or in another 7 years?) and opinion. I just wanted to look back on the hits or possible big misses our club has made.
Couldn't be bothered going on as I realised it's a stupid, pointless exercise. Did you really not notice the same when you did it? Maybe you should forward this to the club, along with your resume, and we can look forward to years of your amazing recruiting abilities (although we'd have to ask the AFL to allow you to take your picks a few years after the draft, can't see a problem with that).

In fairness, you can do this for all clubs and come up with an amazing list, but it does beg the question how we haven't been able to develop our talent as well as other clubs, particularly considering we have taken all this players before those mentioned in the OP.

Adelaides recruiting has been unbelievable, it's amazing they have struggled the last cpl of the years with all this talent. Clearly they didn't have the right coach. And to think how good their list would be with Bock and Davis.

Matt Rendell was their recruiter right? Get him!
