The BigFooty Cricket Forum Fantasy Draft

With SaintkildaMan unable to run his draft due to real life issues, I've received permission from him to step up and take his place. For this edition, in order to keep it simple, we will be running a competition based on One Day Internationals. 8 participants will each pick a squad of 14 and compete to be crowned the inaugural champion.

Many of you may have undertaken drafts before and have a good idea of what to expect. However, for those of you who may not have participated in one before, or would like some specifics about how this draft will run, here's an outline of what to expect.

1. The Participants

a. The Chairman

The Chairman is in charge of running the draft. The Chairman enforces the rules, keeps the draft order and chosen players list updated, authorizes trades, posts match ups and randomizes the bracket. He will also deal with any issues that come up during the duration of the game.

b. The Coaches

In this edition of the draft there will be 8 'Coaches'. These players will select squads following the draft order. They will also be responsible for submitting their elevens before matches and arguing their case for victory.

c. The Umpires

In this edition of the draft there will be three 'Umpires'. The umpires act as the judges of matches, listening to the arguments of coaches and determining which team will be the victors in each match up. They will also be able to provide breakdowns and feedback of squads as the draft progresses.

(note. If we cannot find three judges, I will act as one. I will also judge if any of the umpires are unavailable for a period of time)

2. The Draft

Once the participants are finalised, I will post the draft order. The draft order will be organised. There will be 14 rounds of drafting in order to select full squads. At the end of each round, the order will be reversed, so as to look something like this:

Round 1
1. Team A
2. Team B
3. Team C
4. Team D

Round 2
1. Team D
2. Team C
3. Team B
4. Team A

All players who have ever played a ONE DAY INTERNATIONAL are available for selection. It is highly recommended that coaches post a link to their player's Cricinfo profile with their selection, as this will help with organising the available players list and with judging.

When a coach is up to pick, they must announce their selection in the thread. They will have 24 hours from the previous selection to make their own. If they do not do so, then they will be dropped to the last position of that particular round (the chairman will announce when a player's turn is forfeit). If they miss their selection again, they will be dropped from the game and a replacement found to take over their team.

If a coach knows they will be absent for a period of time, they can send a list of players to the chairman that they would like to select with their next pick(s). When that player's turn comes around, the chairman will go down their list of preferred selections from top to bottom and will pick the first available player from that list. The draft will then continue as normal.

The draft order will be updated often so players know where they stand. Only the chairman and the judges may update the draft order.

At the end of the fourteenth round, players will have 24 hours to finalise their squads (the chairman will announce the beginning and the end of this time period)- they can dump players and pick up a new one just by posting in the thread. Any player released by a coach is then available for any

2.1 Trading

Coaches will be allowed to trade players prior to the final submission of their squads. Trading will be open upon the completion of the second round of drafting. Coaches should suggest and discuss trades via private messages. All trades must involve at least one player and coaches must maintain fourteen overall picks in the draft.

In order to finish a trade, BOTH coaches must PM the chairman with the conditions of the trade - if this is not done, then the trade will not go through. The chairman will also block any trades that he feels is highly unequal.

3. The Matchups

Once drafting and squads are finalised, the chairman will post the matchups. This tournament will be run on a double elimination bracket, which means that a team must lose two matches before they are eliminated. The winner will be the last team left standing.

When matchups are announced, coaches will have 24 hours to PM their final elevens (drawn from their squads)in their batting order to the chairman. They must also PM their preference to Bat or Bowl first, which will be determined by a coin toss (the team listed first in the matchup will be considered to have called 'heads'). If a team does not send their line-up in, the chairman will randomize a team from their squad.

Teams must nominate a captain, a wicket-keeper and their two opening bowlers when they submit their teams.

In order to provide some extra strategy, each game will be played at a particular Australian ground, which will be announced at the time of the matchup. It will be assumed that all matches are day night matches and played without interruptions on the average pitch type for the ground. The coaches and judges can use this to help argue and determine the victors in the matchups. Each matchup will be played at a randomized ground. The grounds in the tournament are as follows:
·

  • The MCG
  • The SCG
  • The Gabba
  • The WACA
  • Adelaide Oval
  • Bellerive
3.1 Arguments and Judging

When determining the results, Umpires should take into account the balance of the sides (ie Batting Depth, Averages and Strike Rates, Economy rates, types of bowlers, bowling depth) and the conditions of the ground. Fielding and leadership may also be used as a determining factor. They should provide some sort of explanation as to why they have made their decision. Umpires need to judge all matchups for the round.

Coaches can make arguments in support of their sides. They can also counter arguments used by their opponents (remember, attack the argument, not the poster). The judge's decision is final - any coach who argues with that excessively will first be warned, then removed from the game if it continues.

All arguments and judging must be made on the basis of ONE DAY INTERNATIONAL records only.

Any further questions can be directed towards the chairman.

Ill take my spot

A bit confused though, how is this simulated and how does it all work. When you say choose players that have played ODI's, does that mean current and/or former players.
Any cricketer who has ever played a One Day International is eligible for your squad. From your squad, you'll pick a best eleven and that will go up against another coach's squad. The umpires will then judge who they think would win the match between the squads based on team makeup, match ups and stats. Winner's continue up the bracket, losers go down to the losers bracket.

First...damn, too many options haha.

Several options running through my head...but for sheer weight of numbers, I'll have to take best available...Sachin Tendulkar.

http://www.espncricinfo.com/ci/content/player/35320.html

Sachin Tendulkar has been the most complete batsman of his time, the most prolific runmaker of all time, and arguably the biggest cricket icon the game has ever known. His batting is based on the purest principles: perfect balance, economy of movement, precision in stroke-making, and that intangible quality given only to geniuses: anticipation. If he doesn't have a signature stroke - the upright, back-foot punch comes close - it is because he is equally proficient at each of the full range of orthodox shots (and plenty of improvised ones as well) and can pull them out at will.

There are no apparent weaknesses in Tendulkar's game. He can score all around the wicket, off both front foot and back, can tune his technique to suit every condition, temper his game to suit every situation, and has made runs in all parts of the world in all conditions.

Some of his finest performances have come against Australia, the overwhelmingly dominant team of his era. His century as a 19-year-old on a lightning-fast pitch at the WACA is considered one of the best innings ever to have been played in Australia. A few years later he received the ultimate compliment from the ultimate batsman: Don Bradman confided to his wife that Tendulkar reminded him of himself.

Thanks for getting this together Kryptastic.

My choice is Joel Garner. I want someone to lead my bowling attack, and I think he was probably the best ODI bowler ever. Had an outstanding economy rate (just over 3) which is very important in one dayers. Also, a very good fielder for such a massive bloke.

If his value in Test cricket was as an integral part of the most formidable pace attacks ever - they spread the load so that he took five wickets in an innings on just seven occasions - then in one-day cricket, particularly in the overs at the end of an innings, when the unhittable yorker speared in relentlessly, he was priceless. At Lord's in 1979 he simply blew England's slim hopes away with 5 for 38, the best figures ever in a World Cup final.

Ricky Ponting

Ticks a few boxes. Obviously one of the greatest batsmen in this form, also one of the best ever fielders and has also captained two World Cup winning teams. Also helps that the games will be played on some of his favorite decks.

Pick 7 - Wasim Akram (Pakistan)

Brilliant ODI bowler being one of only two players with 500 career wickets. Took his scalps at an average of 23.52 with an economy rate of 3.89 which compares well with other great bowlers especially considering the batting friendly tracks he played on. Was also a useful lower order hitter with 6 ODI 50's to his name.
