Martyn reveals role in Sobers' axing
Says all-rounder didn't fit team dynamic

In a refreshingly candid press conference ahead of their opening round clash with the Silver Sphinx, middle order star Damien Martyn has revealed the role his selection played in the dismissal of one time great Sobers.

"thorne89 came to me at our first training session, and told me that he hadn't expected a player of my obvious calibre to fall so low in the draft...I was surprised myself, to be honest. He saw a spot for me in the middle order, and I told him I intended to take it...after all, a ODI average of 40 beats an average of 0 any day of the week."

Talks of early rifts in the Boomers' squad were at first denied by thorne89, but it appears that the axing of Sobers has revealed the truth. The manager himself was more than happy today to stir the pot further, with the opening round game taking on an even larger significance with Sobers' selection in the First XI.

"Look, not everybody was happy when I read out Garry's name in the draft...and it showed at training. Garry seemed to think he had an inherent right to be here, when the popular line of thinking was his record didn't merit it at the time. With the latter selections, I have come around to this thinking too."

The man who took Sobers' spot in the squad, Mahela Jayawardene, had declined to comment. What is known, however, is that the Sobers-Martyn rift is set to light up Hobart, and the entire competition.

Jayawardene gets nod ahead of Yuvraj
"No need for second spinner at Hobart" - thorne89

In an interesting move, lower order basher and part time spinner Yuvraj Singh has missed out on a first round berth for the Boomers. Mahela Jayawardene has been selected to be a 'finisher', and as a more textbook batsman in the face of what is expected to be a challenging surface against the quicks. With their strong pace attack and Ajmal, thorne89 saw no need for a second spinning option for this match, with vice-captain Greg Chappell ready to provide nippy mediums if required.

The final XI for the Boomers for the match at Bellerive is:
1. Sachin Tendulkar
2. Saeed Anwar
3. Rahul Dravid (+)
4. Greg Chappell (vc)
5. Damien Martyn
6. Mahela Jayawardene
7. Imran Khan (c)
8. Malcolm Marshall (2)
9. Saeed Ajmal
10. Curtly Ambrose
11. Michael Holding (1)
-----------
12. Yuvraj Singh

thorne89 has indicated that his preference is to bowl first and make the most of any juice in the pitch.

Hobart has actually produced some rather large scores in one dayers of late. Not really the green juicy pitch you get for the longer form.

Valiant Chargers
Team for WACA

1. Matthew Hayden
2. Desmond Haynes
3. Dean Jones
4. Allan Border (*)
5. AB DeVilliers
6. MS Dhoni
7. Ian Botham
8. Nathan Bracken
9. Joel Garner
10. Shoaib Akhtar
11. Allan Donald

The Chargers have gone with a heavy pace battery for the bouncy WACA wicket. Coach Courtjester suggested if spin was required, Allan Border would provide it.

The Chargers will bowl first if they win the toss, and will probably bowl out the opposition for a low total. Garner and Donald will share the new ball(s).

When does the voting have to be in?
In theory, you can vote as soon as the matchups are posted. However, it's generally customary to let the coaches promote and debate the merits of their respective lineups first. If you've been persuaded one way or the other though, you can vote at that time.

Chargers go into game with 4 quicks plus Botham
The pitch at the WACA was regarded as one of the quickest and bounciest in the world. These characteristics, in combination with the afternoon sea-breezes which regularly pass the ground (the Fremantle Doctor), have historically made the ground an attractive place for pace and swing bowlers.
The Chargers plan to unleash hell on their opponents, Wild Oats 11, in this afternoon's clash. The pace battery is primed and ready, and promises to be spectacular and relentless.

Opening the bowling will be Joel Garner and Shoaib Akhtar, the tallest bowler ever and the fastest bowler ever, respectively. Following these two men are the sheer skill and artistry of Allan Donald, and the left arm canniness of Nathan Bracken. Rounding out the attack is "golden bollocks", Ian Botham, and the spin of skipper Allan Border if required. When asked how he would bowl to the opposition stars including Sangakarra and Gibbs, Joel Garner just smiled and said, "Same as I did in the 80s mon. Get the little suckers out". The opposition's attack, while skilful, holds none of the brilliance of the Charger's.

If the judges need my reasoning behind my team's selection (and why they will beat the opposition), I am more than happy to give it. Once Cricinfo comes back online.

Go for it.

Some of the games will be very tight so any reasoning may help.

Currently at work so I will hopefully put some results up tomorrow after I have had time to do some more research.

All tough to judge, some quick thoughts included. I can go into more detail if requested.

Match 1 Winner : The Young Guns in a toss of the coin affair.

Shane Warne & Harbajan Singh swing this one considering this is the most spin friendly wicket in the country. Although the young guns do not bat as deep I found the credentials of the invitationals attack to be suspect against quality batsmen. If this was at the WACA the result may have been different.

Match 2 Winner : BALLI BOOMERS

Have to judge sobers lower than others and coupled with healy in the top 7 the Sphinx batting is not as strong as the boomers and have to face a quality pace attack, so based on this fact the Boomers get the choccies despite not having a top drawer spinner in the attack. The sphinx definitely do not have a massive advantage with Qadir to make up the ground in the spin bowling department.

Match 3 Winner : The Ginyu Force

Ginyus middle order is far superior here. Alec Stewart needs to be at the top of the order as I feel he would bog the team down coming in at 5, Waugh is not the big hitting player that you need at 7. Ginyus bowling depth is far superior as well.

Match 4 Winner : The Wild Oats 11

This was the hardest to pick, Batting depth vs all out pace attack. If Shoab has an off day then it is easy the batting depth will win. Bracken in at 8 is a real worry and he probably lacks penetration against the cream of batsmen, if Bracken gets taken to which is likely the lack of options for the chargers will hurt them. I think the wild oats top order would go well at the WACA, couple that with the query over batting and bowling depth for the chargers gives wild oats the win.

Flame away, happy to expand the reasoning.

Huzzah, cheers for the vote mate.

I would argue that Ajmal is a top drawer spinner, but I do understand that he might not compare to some of the greats going around in this competition!

Huh. I was sure I posted my reasoning?

Maybe that was when my browser crashed, and the post never got through...
Post it again, I would like to hear them.

Yes that is right, good spinner but does struggle when comparing to others in the comp.

Excuse me while I change your mind, Aces. :)

The SCG should not be over-estimated as a spinners pitch in the one day arena. Understandable with tests, but spinners don't have a greatly superior record in ODIs there overall.

My spinner has a very good record at the SCG - and is significantly a better spinner in ODIs than Harby. Obviously Warne is Warne, but I don't think it's that much of a benefit, particularly when my three main bowlers, Bond, Lee and Chatfield - the first two being some of the best OD strike bowlers ever, the latter being a great success in Sydney - have the records they do. I wouldn't expect the opposition - which is, with all due respect, a very brittle batting line-up - to score much against my team, while my openers, Gilchrist and Greenidge, would get my batting off to a great start, with the records they have. While, of the rest, only Lehmann has a better than average record at the SCG, I would expect their class to result in at least a decent score, and certainly my team should be able to chase down a total set by this opposition. The highest average in their team's batting is 41, by the notoriously unreliable Pietersen. The team as a whole could very well fall in a heap against my strike bowlers. Granted, they may manage to have everything come together against me, but I doubt it.

I will post my counter argument, not that it really matters now I guess! For starters my batting lineups are obviously quite changeable, Pollock can come in after a good start for example. Stewarts strike rate of a shade under 70 isn't exactly plodder like for that era(Dean Jones while a little earlier was 72, Bevan around the same time was 74), he also regularly batted in the middle order later on for England.

I would also argue the ground needs more consideration. I am assuming we are playing at the grounds basically as they have performed in recent times. For starters chasing at Adelaide Oval of late has been far more successful than batting first. Secondly I would argue two good spinners against a team batting first would help restrict the score, Mushtaq(Career average of 21 & 18 at AO, economy rate higher but takes wickets) and Underwood(CE of 3.4), while the opposition only has the one proven full time spin option(Murali, CE of 3.94 & 4.4 at AO) and one who struggles against good opposition in Al Hasan(Averages high 40's against India, Aus, SA, SL) with part timers who would be risky especially if Sehwag is still in. For the rest of my bowlers Younis barely took a wicket at AO but his economy improved to 4, Pollocks average improves to 15 at the ground with an economy of 3.9, Waugh has a poorer average but better economy at the ground. To Ginyu's batsman, has superior middle order talent no doubt but the fact they are setting and the wicket makes this a lot less of a factor than say on a greentop or a Test match. Clarke dominates at the ground, Mccullums SR flies down to 71 for some reason, Bevans SR @ AO is 71(same as Stewart) but worth noting just 248 runs @ 61(1x50) in 8 games, shows how little the middle order is often needed here. Kluseners batting in Australia is not good reading, in 19 innings he had 1 50 @ 22 with his SR dropping down 15 to 74!(sorry freofan).

While we're batting, once again ground consideration. Our top 4 is the key, no doubt in overall batting depth Ginyu have us covered but once again it's very unlikely our middle order will be needed early. Amla goes past 50 every other innings, Ponting is Ponting, the pitch is made for an in form Sehwag(apparently only played 1 game on it, good numbers in Tests there). Chanderpaul can keep things moving and averages over 40 in 5 games at the ground. I find it very unlikely we would lose a bunch of early wickets. Murali's average at the ground goes up from 21 to 26, eco goes up too, Lillee in 4 games at AO averaged 39.. well up from his 20.5 CA, a slight increase in his economy as well. Mcdermott improves at AO, average and economy improves but worth noting he only took 18 ODI wickets in 10 games at the ground... hardly the figures to indicate he will rip through us. Kluesners average and economy increase in Australia. Watson stays around his career stats, Bevan surprisingly bowled just 11 overs in 8 games at the ground.

In conclusion I think I have addressed why I don't agree with the reasons given and hopefully I can sway the other 2 judges my way! I like freofans team a lot so was very happy to get them at Adelaide and even happier to win the toss and send them in. Certainly other grounds I would have an uphill battle arguing my case.

*** Just a quick note. I only listed Adelaide Oval stats for those who had played at least 3 games there. ***
