VIA PM, courtjester picks Allan Donald

Allan Donald: I was hoping he'd slip to this late in the draft. Outstanding one day bowler who will combine with Garner to form a fierce attack. Great one day stats, 272 wickets, average of 21, at the remarkable SR of 31.

Quote:
If the credit for South Africa's success in the modern era could be given to one player, that cricketer would be Allan Donald. A classical action and top-drawer pace would have won him a place in any side in his prime, and for much of his career he was the only world-class performer in the South African team, spearing the ball in, shaping it away and always making things happen. His strike rate was below 50 in Tests and close to 30 in one-day internationals.

Wow.

I was tossing up between Donald and my pick. I went with this guy (in my earlier, now edited post) on the assumption that jester would be the only one to pick Donald (thinking that he had already picked), and he wouldn't pick again until after me.

But jester has forced my hand again, so, my pick:

If Bond doesn't get you, Binga will. Also one of the best one day bowlers of all-time - and that is not negotiable.

Was hoping for Donald or Holding... oh wells.

I will instead go for a batsman. Next pick is Hashim Amla.

Has an amazing record since making his debut. Averages 56 @ 92 playing up the order, averages a ton every 6 innings and 50 pretty much every 2nd innings. Might not have the games under the belt that others do but a great record.

Fun draft gents, really enjoying it. I had to play cricket today, so I messaged Kryptastic with my selections to post after thorne, which were Donald, Holding and Lee, in that order. Great minds think alike! They've all gone this round.

Good pick up on Sobers, I knew as a piece of trivia that he'd played a one-dayer, but I was going to wait til later to spring him out. He'd have been an awesome one-day player.

Also, well done on Amla. His one-day stats are huge, both average and SR. I didn't realise that until we started this.

Just as a reminder about selections and judging:

3.1 Arguments and Judging

When determining the results, Umpires should take into account the balance of the sides (ie Batting Depth, Averages and Strike Rates, Economy rates, types of bowlers, bowling depth) and the conditions of the ground. Fielding and leadership may also be used as a determining factor. They should provide some sort of explanation as to why they have made their decision. Umpires need to judge all matchups for the round.

Coaches can make arguments in support of their sides. They can also counter arguments used by their opponents (remember, attack the argument, not the poster). The judge's decision is final - any coach who argues with that excessively will first be warned, then removed from the game if it continues.

All arguments and judging must be made on the basis of ONE DAY INTERNATIONAL records only.

Just as a reminder about selections and judging:
It should be taken into account that guys in the 70s and 80s didn't strike as high as guys now. Better bats, roped grounds etc. I have a few guys I want to select, but their numbers are poorer than most modern players.

In the 80s a score of 220-230 was considered good.

I have a feeling that post above relates to my selection of Sobers.

Surely such a selection should be rewarded via common sense as opposed to saying he has a batting average of 0; delist?

I would think in your case at least his list A stats should come into play as a sort of guide.

Sourav Ganguly

Shane Watson

Needed an opener, as well as a batter that can bowl. Can open bowling and batting as well. Opted against keeper again as there aren't really too amazing ones left. I'm sure I'll get a decent enough one. Needed another bowler but I got quite a few in mind and they aren't ridiculously amazing choices either so I went with a bit of variety instead.

With regards to the Sobers issue, I've made the decision that anyone with under 10 ODI's played can have their ODD records taken into account during judging. They will, however, be judged at a lower standard than proper ODI records.

I have been asked about WSC records - they can be used to help build an argument, but not as the sole basis for one.

Cheers for the clarification...and setting this up, has been fun so far. :thumbsu:

Pick 42 - Mark Waugh (Australia)
http://www.espncricinfo.com/ci/content/player/8189.html

Should form a good opening partnership with Sanath Jayasuria similar to the way he did with Gilchrist. He was also a useful part time bowler and brilliant fieldsman.

Just an idea. Shoot it down if you wish. Considering we have a 14 man squad. Perhaps the last two rounds(picking players 11-14) could be done 2 players at a time to quicken it up. By then I doubt there will be a great deal between players and more everyone plugging up holes or strengthening a certain area.

In an era of relatively slow batting (compared to what we see today), this man stands out for his extraordinary strike rate. And it's not as though he sacrificed his average in return, for he still averaged 47.62, even though he was batting at first drop most of the time. Not a powerful hitter, but an elegant one. One of the most unsung batsmen of the past few decades, a Pakistan great.
