Vettori has a good ODI economy but average is not that spectacular. Think sides were often happy to see off his 10 overs knowing that the NZ attack didn't have much else (especially when Bond was injured).

Bond had injuries? No way...:p

It's a shame, he would have had such an amazing record had he been fit consistently. :(

This player is, unfortunately, no longer with us. Some people may disagree on the unfortunateness of his loss, but there is no question in my mind, or in that of many of his countrymen, that his tragic death was a great loss. As a cricketer, he was ferocious, an attacking batsman, a very useful medium pacer and an excellent fielder. He was also an excellent leader of men. He is a welcome addition to my team.

Hansie Cronje.

Brave pick Glinn. I can't see you getting through this tournament without someone trying to argue that your team will be on the take because of Hansie. You might as well pick up Malik, Azharruddin and Kaneria to go with him ;)

I know I need a spinner, and there aren't a heap left, but I was surprised by this guy's ODI stats:

Graham Swann

67 games, bowling average of 25, bowling SR of 34, and economy of 4.5.

Outstanding bowling figures for an ODI spinner.

As well as that, he averages 14 with the bat at a SR of nearly 90.

Happy with that as coach!

It's time to sow my Saeed's! One dashing opener to partner Tendulkar at the top and a guy I consider to be the best spinner in International cricket right now...just ask England.

SAEED ANWAR

Majestic timing and placement were Saeed Anwar's hallmarks. He was an opener capable of electrifying starts in all cricket through graceful strokeplay rather than brute force. He loved driving through the off side with minimal footwork. He annihilated any bowler offering width outside off stump although he too regularly guided the ball straight into the hands of fourth slip or gully. He first came to prominence as a one-day player but soon achieved equal success in Test cricket.
Anwar is one of the best of all time, certainly in Pakistan's best ever ODI team at the top of the order. 21 hundreds with an average of 40+ is a terrific record, and a strike rate of 80+ is also excellent. Has a highest score of 194 (1997) which held the record for the highest ODI score for some years.

A few fun facts...
- Wisden Cricketer of the Year 1997
- Highest Test average against Australia by a Pakistani (59.06) - irrelevant but wow!
- One of the few cricketers to score 3 consecutive ODI 100s.
- On three other occasions, he scored 2 in a row; the first batsman to achieve this feat.

SAEED AJMAL

A modern-day offspinner who relies on the doosra as much as on other variations of flight and speed, Saeed Ajmal made a relatively late entry into international cricket, at the age of 30, but is doing his best to make up for lost time, quickly moving up to be regarded among the best spinners in the game today.

Ajmal first made his mark in international cricket in ODIs. He was called up for the 2008 Asia Cup, and soon after he had the Australians completely bewildered in the ODI series in the UAE; he gave away few runs and his doosra was almost unreadable. The ICC called him for his action, though it was cleared soon after. The pressure didn't get to him and immediately after, he played a crucial role in Pakistan's drive to the 2009 World Twenty20 title, regularly bottling up the middle overs with Shahid Afridi. He ended the joint second-highest wicket-taker in the tournament, with an exemplary economy rate as batsmen around the world struggled to get a read on his bag of tricks.
Average of 24 with an economy rate of 4.14 is excellent in modern day ODIs. He is one of the most improved cricketers of the past few years IMO and has a bag of tricks to confound the best batsmen out there.

Shoaib Akhtar

Rounds out my pace battery and bowling attack nicely. Tell me you'd enjoy facing:

Garner
Shoaib
Donald

with Botham and Swann to bowl as well. Brilliant one day bowling attack. I might try to pick up a part timer with my next pick, but I seriously doubt I'll use one!

Put simply, Akhtar was one of the fastest bowlers ever. Maybe the fastest, but why speculate? He was bloody quick, that's for sure.

What he had was remarkable. Early on, in 1999, there wasn't a more thrilling sight in the world than Shoaib hurtling in off an impossibly long run and beating the world's best batsmen for pace. Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar were clean bowled off successive deliveries at Eden Gardens and the World Cup in England later in the year was all but Shoaib's.

Other peaks came intermittently, but from 2004 to 2006, he rediscovered a spark; the trophy was the home series win over England in 2005-06 in which he took 17 wickets. By this time not only was he still very, very quick, but he had become an extremely smart bowler, an oft-underrated aspect of his development.

Well we all cant be perfect.

Would have loved to play but since I cant I am more than happy to judge the teams.

Lots of great value left to be drafted, up to you guys to find them.

Been watching for 30 thirty years so have all ODI eras covered.

Good luck all.

This selection is that of another New Zealand pace bowler. He was from the Hadlee era, playing second fiddle to Sir Richard for much of his career. But in his own right, he was an excellent bowler, especially in one day matches, most notably in Australia and New Zealand. It is for this reason that I have picked this master of economy.

Ewen Chatfield.
