I was just reading an article about Spurs, geez there squad is miles better than ours. There midfield is just packed. Kranjcar, Modric, Huddlestone, Palacios, Lennon, Van der Vaart, Jenas and Sandro. Compare that with Lucas, Gerrard, J.Cole, Meireles, Poulsen, Jovanovic, Kuyt and Rodriguez. They are miles better.

And up front they have four genuinely good forwards in Defoe, Crouch, Pav and Keane. While we have Torres, N'Gog and Babel if you count him as a forward. After that it's Kuyt or Jova moved from midfield or maybe Pacheco. Were not very good.

Our defence is alright though...

Not really.

RB: Glen Johnson - he's woeful. How did you guys pay £17m or whatever it was for this spud? Can't defend. The attacking side of his game was what saved him last season, but even that so far this season has been shit.

CB: Jamie Carragher - He's over-the-hill. Slow, slow and slow. Wouldn't get a game for most clubs in the premier league, the only reason he gets a game for Liverpool is because he's a Scouser.

CB: Martin Skrtel - Used to be very good before he got fly kicked by Robinho (I think?). Since then he's come back pretty average, looks slow to react to things - and that's the thing. He's a reactive defender rather than a pro-active one, and that's only ever going to ask for trouble. Was very lucky not to give 2 penalties away on the weekend.

LB: Paul Konchesky - You signed him from Fulham. The worst part about it is that he actually improves your defence.

Agger is very good will go straight into centre back
Johnson an England international... blabla england are shit and so on he cant defend rahrahrah. He was worth that much for a reason.
Carra: People slag him off about being slow, i have not even seen him been beat once this year in a contest. He gets the job done still .
Skrtel played a blinder against arsenal, not so good against city and west brom but as a 3rd centre back he is handy.
Konch and Aurelio are reliable options for LB.

Our defence is not our issue at all.

I like how you put anyone in to support your argument. You dont even include our best defender in Daniel Agger. Skrtel is very handy as our 3rd choice central defender. The Greek is also handy, completely dominant in the air. Konch isnt even our best left back. Aurelio when fit is very good defensively and brings quality coming forward including his ability over a dead ball.

Johnson can defend, otherwise he wouldnt have been a defender for his entire career including England's first choice RB. This myth that he cant defend is just bullshit. He is a very attacking full back who does his job defensively. Is he the world best RB? No. But he is pretty good defensively and very good coming forward on the overlap. We have good cover at LB with Konch and very good cover across teh back 4 in the uber impressive Kelly. Our defence is fine, has barely changed since last season except for the purchase of Konch and Wilson, and we were the third stingiest defence last season in the league. We also have the best goalkeeper in england too.

Johnson is only worth that much because you significantly overpaid for him. No other reason.

He's rubbish.

The reason you haven't seen Carragher be beaten in a contest is because he always hacks the players down before they have the chance to.

He's slow - and as a result he's a dirty player who should get booked far more often than he is.

Also, I didn't say your defence was your issue, it's clear the midfield is, but your defence certainly has weaknesses.

I didn't put anyone in to suit my argument.

Skrtel has been playing CB to start the year. I'll take your word for it that Agger will start ahead of him - and if that's the case your defence improves, because Agger is a lot better than Skrtel.

Konchesky isn't your best left back - but are you trying to tell me he won't start? I would've thought it was 100% guaranteed that he's been brought in to start regularly on the left of defence. If Aurelio is so good, why has Hodgson preferred to play a CB at LB instead of him?

And the line about being the third stingiest defence is in no small part down to a certain Javier Mascherano, who doesn't play for you anymore.

The amount of goals a team concedes, is surprisingly enough not that strongly related to the ability of their defence. Teams with a very good midfield and a not so good defence will concede less goals than teams with a not so good midfield and a good defence.

Johnson call is fair enough this season, although i thought we was a very handy player last season, i personally don't think he was worth the price tag, but by no means am i saying he is shite, he is handy in a team like Liverpool because we have zero creativity.

Skrtel, i thought has had a good start to the season, i think Agger and Carra is much better partnership but, every football fan, that isn't a Liverpool supporter will say Carragher is shithouse and the worst/slowest footballer in the world, they are most probably just jealous cause we have guy who can hold jerseys and not let go of the oppositions shirt and get away with it. He will never be taken out of the starting XI either.

Koncheskey is a signing i'm actually pleased with. I'm sick of buying left backs from other countries with no premier league expierance and they end up as being spuds. Koncehskey has at least shown his good at this level and is a very handy left back. Him and Fabio, means good depth at left back(If Fabio is ever fit)

Carragher is not that bad. The problem is that every mistake he makes is highlighted whereas his good games (of which there are many) are glossed over. He does lack pace (hardly on his own there) and has little ball-playing ability, but he's still a decent (though not as good as he was) pure defender. His positioning is generally fine and he gets in a lot of tackles/last-ditch blocks etc.

Agger, on the other hand, is a good player and still young but is slightly overrated by Liverpool fans. He has not had a good run with injuries, has had to play out of position at left-back etc., but I don't think he's been as impressive as some of our fans think he has been. He is by far our best ball-playing defender and is quite an elegant player for a centre-back, but he lacks presence. I'd still play him alongside Carragher as the first-choice central defensive pairing.

Skrtel, as others have said, has not really been the same since he broke his jaw against Tottenham early last season. He looked pretty good before that after a nightmare debut against the mighty Havant & Waterlooville in the FA Cup. However, he was immense against Arsenal in the first Premier League game and if fit, will figure prominently this season.

Hard to disagree with the calls on Johnson. Not a great pure defender but very capable going forward. I always liked the unheralded Arbeloa who was a far better defender, but gave us nothing going forward. But I can understand the logic behind signing him, as we are not overly strong on the wings, and so need Johnson to get forward as much as possible to provide an option.

Don't really rate Konchesky, but we have him now, so we might as well get behind him. Aurelio is made of glass unfortunately, so Konchesky will probably play a fair bit. Aurelio is handy on top of defending as he puts in a good cross/free-kick etc.

Johnson is a winger more than a full back. I agree with f_c that he is simply an awful defender.

In fact, our whole backline is looking awful, and we are getting no help from Lucas and Poulsen. Our season is not looking too good.

Don't feel bad. Our forwards are ok and we have depth there but they don't have the absolute quality of anything near a Torres. I don't understand why Kuyt isn't paired with Torres up front more, they seem like they would both suit each other.

Because Dirk is rubbish and would only get in Torres' way.

Playing him on the right hand side is the only way we can get him out of everyone's way, without telling him he's benched.

Yeah thats true. Having played as a defender in a side with no central midfield this season, I can tell you it isnt fun.

Your sweeping statements are hilarious... like just announcing that Glen Johnson is rubbish. If he was so rubbish would he have played for clubs like Chelsea and Liverpool and be the first choice RB for England. So guys like Hodgson, Capello and Benitez are wrong because he's definitely rubbish. That statement is just shit, it's clear to everyone that Glen Johnson is not a rubbish footballer.

Your comments on Carragher are completely wrong too. Carragher rarely gives away free kicks in dangerous areas so he is never dragging people down because he got beat like you suggest. Carra reads the game exceptionally well and that makes up for his lack of pace, much like how Sami got around his lack of pace. Carragher is a very good defender despite what most people outside of LFC fans think. He's the first player on the teamsheet for me.

You are right on a couple of things though that RH obviously has differing opinions to me on who is best and where. Why was he playing Agger over Aurelio at LB. It says that he doesnt trust Aurelio at LB so despite me thinking he is our best LB, according to RH he is clearly behind new signing Konch and even Agger. It also suggest he rates Skrtel before Agger in the centre of defence which again I dont agree with.

Masch is a huge loss, you can see how our midfield got bitchslapped by City and we conceded 3 goals. Our midfield needs to get better to be the defence in front of the defence. All good managers defend right from the front. Poulsen and Lucas will have to up there games to help our defence.

You're not all that far away from describing Emile Heskey there.

Come on jod, you can't be that blind. Carragher is forever holding on and dragging people down. If we had reasonable referees that don't (for whatever reason) turn a blind eye to a lot of Carraghers defensive efforts he would give away 5 penalties a season let alone free kicks in dangerous areas.

Carragher doesnt do anything that other CB's arent doing. First name on the teamsheet for me, but you're a City fan, any fan outside of LFC fans think Carra is shit. So nothing I can say will change your mind.

It's not clear to everyone. It's clear to everyone who is a deluded Liverpool supporter, everyone else know's he's rubbish.

As moomba said, plenty of rubbish footballers have played for England and big clubs. Emile Heskey must be an awesome footballer.

Johnson is RB for England, because quite frankly, there's nobody else. It also has a lot to do with a reputation that he has made for himself previously (because he used to be good).

Your comments on Carragher are completely wrong too. Carragher rarely gives away free kicks in dangerous areas so he is never dragging people down because he got beat like you suggest. So only Liverpool fans are right and everybody else is wrong?

Come on jod. Carragher played 2 matches in the WC and got 2 yellow cards. Referee's that aren't blinded by him (for some reason the EPL referee's let him get away with murder), call him up for fouls and book him straight away.

At least one of you trolls has the balls to list your own team while trolling on the Liverpool thread.

Also had to LOL when every CB in the league does it.

Jod, if Carragher is the first name on your team sheet, Liverpool will never improve.

It's quite clear that since his amazing seasons in 04/05 and 05/06, he hasn't been the same player since.

Clumsy fouls, grabbing on to people, bringing them down, falling over fresh air.

He may read the game well, but his timing in the challenge is not as good as Sami's, nor is his heading ability, Sami had other strengths as well as reading the game and positioning to make up for his lack of pace.

Carragher doesn't have those strengths and is not one of Liverpool's best two central defenders.

Carragher will never step aside for the benefit of the team so we need a manager with balls to make that decision instead.

No manager that takes over at LFC will make that decision, he will not be prepared to risk losing the local fans by dropping one of their favourites sons, despite it being blatantly obvious to every single person in football (outside of LFC) that he's not in the best XI.

Is this the reason he isn't being dropped?

I think it could be that we have replacements around the same quality.. hence why I wanted a CB in the off season

Agger is a much better central defender than Carragher and Skrtel (prior to Man City knee injury) is a much better central defender.

Martin Kelly is also a much better central defender, despite never having played their for the first team.

I think the manager wont drop Carragher because of the fact he's a local and the fans will be displeased with him being dropped.

I'd even play Soto ahead of Carra.
