I reckon we've missed the boat on selling Gerrard.

Cant see it happening now. Plus even if he wants to go, we wont get what we would have for him a few years ago.
Agreed. The big spenders (Chelsea/City and co) are looking for players around the early to mid 20's range, so I guess they can be ruled out.

With the form he is in, he probably wouldn't even qualify for the customary 10+ mil English player levy. (Carlton Cole is easily worth 20 million pounds remember!)

Viera is mid 20's now is he?
You are missing the point. What I mean is they would rather spend big money on players who have yet to reach their peak/are just about within their peak and will offer their service for a good amount of time over players who have just about passed their peak stage. Look how much money Mourinho spent or how much money Real Madrid spent in the summer on these sort of players. BTW, if they are interested, do you really think they will make a big enough offer that will a; be enough for your club to find a replacement, b; suit your club's needs?

As for Vieira, he was a free transfer in the winter transfer window on a six month deal and not a big money signing. A stopgap who has previous EPL experience and will help them push towards the CL spot till the end of the season. Not many big names would move during January, if any, especially to a club like Manchester City who aren't even challenging for the title. In the summer, City will make a move for stars, especially if they are going to play in the UCL next season.

Watching Degen last night really was comedy capers. This guy has no clue what defending is.

He would just sprint forward even if we didn't have full control of the ball. Then because of that, there was a massive gap at RB and so Arshavin could do as he pleased.

I was very worried when he got the yellow card because he was still getting exposed and so he was a big chance to get sent off.

His defending for the goal was abyssmal. He started running forward a bit since he thought we turned the ball over, but we didn't so Diaby was free to stroll in and score. He looked like a deer in headlights, just standing there.

I never want to see him there ever again.

No surprise Benitez rabbits on about being denied a penalty at the end. There's always a ****ing excuse isn't there.... The offence wasn't even in the box Rafa you blind shit.

Refuses to be accountable for poor performance upon poor performance. It's always something else. The referee. The pitch. The linesman. The opposition kitman. The Arsenal tea lady. The weather. The state of the health system. The bus didn't have the right model TV. The dressing rooms were too cold. It's always something even more ridiculous than the last.

The staggering lack of accountability is even more infuriating than the shit performances themselves.

No doubt we'll see Benitez, Kuyt and Lucas in the papers or on the Offal tommorow sprouting "Our season starts here - and we are working really hard."

Only positive is that Tottenham lost and Villa only got a point. We werent very good. In fact we looked toothless. We need Torres and Johnson back, and Yossi, we look a far better attacking side with those three. Without them, we lack the creativy and pace to beat teams.

Arsenal werent great either though but they did enough. Losing Carra hurt, as I dont think we concede with him on the pitch. Could go into the City game with both Carra and the Greek now. I hope Kelly plays in front of Degen.

Maxi wasnt great, cant see why Riera isnt playing, we played really well in his last two starts then was benched for no apparent reason? Babel looked alright when he came on. At least he looked like he might score, cant say the same for N'Gog.

What a season we are having. It will be an absolute miracle if we finish 4th.
It's staggering that all the fans seem to be able to see things, but Rafa can't.

Again, a great summary from you, jod. Personally, I expected Arsenal to win. We have a poor record away to them and with the players we had out, we just don't have the depth.

I hope we smash Urea Urinzini or whatever there name is, just to get some confidence up before facing City. I just dont know where the goals are going to come from to finish 4th. No Torres and Yossi and Gerrard is just out of form and doesnt look like scoring. Kuyt to be fair has stepped up but he isnt a natural goal scorer like Torres. N'Gog and Babel arent up to it. N'Gog isnt a bad player just doesnt score enough goals, but he is young and can be forgiven. I think it's time to play Pacheco.

It's probably been time to play Pacheco for a while, but since when has Rafa liked blooding young players?

They are the exception, not the norm.

And Lucas arrived with a decent sized fee for a then 20-21 year old as well as a massive rep in the Brazilian league.

Rafa was always going to him.

With Insua, he was always highly rated and with Aurelio constantly being injured and Dossena being useless as a LB, Insua got his chance and took it, now he's firmly entrenched in the first team.

Ngog is playing because of the injury to Torres and the fact that in the formation Rafa plays, he needs to play.

I think the development could be good for him so when Torres gets back and Ngog comes off the bench later in the season (or next season) we should see a marked improvement in his game.

The defenders don't seem to kick lumps out of him like they do Nando, but it's just a matter of time before they do. He's starting to become more physical; so it will happen.

But he cant handle that yet.

N'Gog, Inusa, Lucas....
Insua is maybe the only one you could justify.

N'gog was bought for a small, but reasonable fee for the first team - and Lucas was a 6m pound signing - he has to play those two.

Have to laugh at going to the Emirates to counter attack - and have posssibly the slowest football players ever (Kuyt & Rodriguez) on the flanks.

We need to **** this 4-5-1 bullshit off - at least until Torres is back, anyway.

It doesn't work at all - and it's unfair on N'gog as well. He's always going up against 3-4 good defenders because he's so isolated.

Well, apparently...

Torres is going to play against Citeh.

He started running on Tuesday and is hopeful he can play...

His injury was originally listed as a 6-8 week injury (after he had surgery on his knee in Barcelona) and is has been out for four weeks.

If he plays and gets ****ing re-injured again. I will murder the doctors and physios at the club.

I don't think it's really an injury you're likely to injure straight after a return though.

It's either good enough to play on - or it isn't. It's not really like returning from a soft tissue injury too early (as he has in the past). Impact injuries are a lot easier to deal with. Hopefully he's only subjected for the last 20 minutes or so initially though.

Hopefully we play a mixture of kids and shite squad players against Unirea or whatever they are, and play the strong team against City.

For Unirea I'd like to see -

Reina

Kelly - Kyrgiakos - Skrtel - Insua

Degen - Aquilani - Gerrard - Babel

Ngog - Pacheco

Subs: Cavalieri, Darby, Aurelio, Riera, Spearing, Amoo, Kacaniklic

Then I'd imagine we'd probably go to City and turn out with the below:

Reina

Carragher - Skrtel - Agger - Aurelio

Mascherano - Lucas

Rodriguez - Gerrard - Riera

Kuyt

Subs: Cavalieri, Kelly, Insua, Ngog, Babel, Aquilani, Torres (hopefully)

The penalty you were denied against Arsenal came in the first half. Raised arm, unnatural position, inside box, blocked Maxi's shot. Clear handball. And obvious penalty.

The other one was probably slightly outside the box but did block a potential goal.

Yossi finally returns to training:

Yossi Benayoun has handed Liverpool a fitness boost by returning to training following a broken rib.

The Israeli hasn't featured since our Cup replay with Reading on January 13.

But Benitez told Liverpoolfc.tv: "Today Yossi was training with the team. Still we have to be careful with his rib but he was training."
Rafa on Pacheco:

"Dani is continuing to train with the first team," said the Reds boss.

"When we let (Andriy) Voronin go (to Dynamo Moscow), we immediately brought Dani into the group and every day you can see that he is progressing. His training is good.

"Every day you are thinking about when you can play, he has been on the bench a lot and sometimes you are thinking when it might be right to put him on.

"But you also have to think about senior players and giving time to others who need it. The one thing we know, though, is Dani is a player with quality.

"He has game intelligence and we know that he can make a difference. He is still very young but we are pleased with him and he is doing well."
Pacheco agreed a new deal to keep him at Anfield until 2012 last August, and Benitez is confident the former Barcelona forward has the talent to succeed at first-team level.

"Dani has no problems when he is in possession," he said. "He is clever and he always wants to try difficult things but that shows the quality that he has.

"The fact he is training with us shows what we think of him. He is with us all the time and that means he can play at any time.

"It depends on the game but, clearly, if he continues to keep working as he has been doing, he will definitely gets his chance."

Carra and Torres update:

Carragher limped out of the 1-0 defeat to Arsenal in midweek with a groin injury, but the problem isn't serious and the boss expects his vice-captain to make a speedy comeback.

"I was talking with him this morning when he was working on the bike and he is fine," Benitez said. "

"It wasn't very serious but he could not continue [at Arsenal]. I am not sure if he will be available for Thursday against Unirea, but maybe he will have a chance against City."

Benitez also confirmed Fernando Torres continues to make good progress in his recovery from a knee injury, but he insists speculation suggesting his Spanish striker could return at Eastlands is premature.

"I think it will be too early," he added. "He is training with the physios and the fitness coach, but he's still not involved with the team.

"We will see next week how he progresses."
