I too think Gerrard's best position in just off the striker. He was dominant in that role playing off Torres and I think he can be again playing off Suarez. In fact I think he could be more dominant and score more goals as Suarez creates and tears defences apart more than Torres did.

I like us playing 4-4-1-1 with Gerrard off Suarez. Carroll has to warm the pine, but back to midfield, that leaves a spot open next to Lucas. Game by game I think with who partners him.

On a sidenote, how far do you think Stevie can climb the goal scoring charts at Liverpool. He has 141 strikes next to his name and sits 9th all time in our scoring charts. I think Gerrard is one of those Giggs type players who will continue to play well into his 30's. He has a bit of an injury history but if his body holds, he is talented enough and has a huge engine to be able to play to 35-37. I think he could get to 200 which would be a great achievement from midfield.

I think Kenny needs to give the partership between Carroll and Suarez some time to develop. We haven't really had a proper look at what that partnership can bring us. But if it doesn't bring the results we can't really argue with him wanting to change things.

We played a midfield 3 of Gerrard-Lucas-Adam against United and it worked really well I thought. Maybe have Lucas and Adam sitting deeper with Gerrard playing further up.

Going from the Stoke game it looks like Lucas-Spearing is our best partnership though. So, maybe that with Gerrard or Suarez playing further forward. I'd also like to see Henderson given some time playing central midfield, He brings the same kind of energy that someone like Spearing does, doesn't fly into tackles as much, but will give us that little bit more with the ball at his feet.

Just a sidenote - How ****ing good is Daniel Agger, be one of the best defenders in the world. Would walk into Barca, Real, City, United defence.

Yes and we're gonna win the league with Henderson or Adam in midfield.... Spearing is a very good player, this stupid perception of him being shit because he's mid 20s and a midget should stop. Loads of great midfielders have developed late

Carroll's looking better, he seems to be getting more adapted to the system. Thought he was very good against Stoke, some of the layoffs were class. And a superb asset when defending set pieces. Could've scored, too

He needs a run of games, should get a run of games. Plus if we're gonna play Downing, then we need Carroll on the pitch. We bought Downing for Carroll, makes no sense to play one and not the other. Otherwise just play Maxi, better player than Downing

Where art though Raul Meireles. The decision to sell him was just mind boggingly stupid. ATM you simply need to persist with Adam or Henderson or change formation. Lose too much in a attacking sense by playing Spearing. He gets stuck in but his passing is worse then Lucas TBH. Lucas needs a better passer next to him then Spearing if hes to continue to lead the midfield defensively. Time to play a basic 4-4-2 with Kelly at RB and some wingers who track back. In that case id go

Reina
Kelly Skrtel Agger Enrique
Kuyt Gerrard Lucas Downing
Carroll Suarez

Its an attacking team somewhat but you really dont have a back four that can be relied upon to keep a clean sheet so its the best way to approach the game atm

He asked to be transferred, what were we meant to do?
We could easily have refused. Henry did the right thing with Torres, who has undoubtedly proven that whilst still a good player will never reach 2007-2009 levels that he achieved. So taking 50 million quid from Chavski was a masterstroke, especially as Suarez has proven a considerably superior player since.

Meireles we should have just given him the pay rise that he was due, it wasn't like the lad didn't deserve it. Last season superb. Anyway, what's done is done. We got a decent transfer fee for him and I expect us to buy a decent right winger in Jan with the proceeds.

But playing a midfield 3 makes us play narrow so Carroll doesnt get any service from wide areas to get his head on. If we play 4-4-2 then our best midfield partnership is Gerrard/Lucas but if we play Gerrard off Suarez then it really goes game for game as to which one of Adam, Henderson or Spearing should play next to Lucas.

Both Lucas and Spearings passing is underrated IMO, sure they aren't Xabi Alsonso but they can hold their own, Lucas' ball to Suarez for the first goal against Fulham last season, and it's not like Spearing is like Carra with the ball and just hoofs it aimlessly.

I like the team and any team with Agger in the back four means we are more than likely to keep a clean sheet. He just makes our back four so much more confident and helps us keep the high line.

You'd think with Enrique and Johnson/Kelly that you could play 3 in the middle with the width coming from the fullback positions.
So a 5-3-2...

Reina
Johnson Carra Skrtel Agger Enrique
Gerrard Lucas Spearing
Carroll Suarez

So Enrique and Johnson bomb forward to supply an outlet in wide areas? I dont know, could work.

It depends on who you're playing and what the makeup of the midfield 3 is.

Have a couple of defensively minded midfielders in there and there is no need to play 5 at the back. So more like (using the players in your XI except Downing for Skrtl):

Reina
Johnson Carragher Agger Enrique
Lucas Spearing
Suarez Gerrard Downing
Carrol

What would make this formation work is that both Johnson (or Kelly) and Enrique are more than capable of getting up and down the pitch to help out an attack.

Best midfield and forward combo we can have

Carra out though, for either Skrtel or Coates. Maybe Kelly for Johnson, then we have a side that can match most

Kelly easily over Johnson. Is clearly the better defender and while not as good as a fit in form Johnson(which we have not seen for a while) offensively, he is still pretty close. That being said I still would love to see Kelly played at CB, which is/was his natural position just to see how he goes as I would prefer having to play Johnson at RB than playing Skrtel at all, if that makes sense?

Thinking ahead I like a XI like this.

Reina
Johnson Kelly Agger Enrique
Kuyt Gerrard Lucas Downing
Carrol Suarez

Can be varied. As frustrating as Kuyt can be you can't overlook the pressure his constant workrate puts on defenders, especially when partnered with Suarez. He also provides some of the best positioning of anyone in the EPL no matter what role he is given, he always seems to be in the right spot... sure he might then miss it from 6 yards out but I would take this over someone lazy who shows up once in every few matches. Henderson could start when a more defensive approach is needed. A more offensively set 4-3-2-1 could also be good with that set of players imo with Gerrard and Suarez behind Carrol, takes out the width play somewhat but we seem to be clogging up the middle anyway.

Can't recall Kelly ever playing at CB for the first-team, would like to see it tried though.

Gerrard will be back but Suarez is doubtful for tonight with the ankle injury he picked up against Stoke the other night.

Suarez is bossing this game. Everything good we've done has had Suarez' name all over it. He loves a good nutmeg! ;)

Seen some positive signs from Carrol. I'd much rather him partnering Suarez than Kuyt.
