Really gutted that Suarez is officially gone. Thanks for the memories Luis and the role you played in bringing us back to the champions league.

Massively important to spend the Suarez money wisely and not do a Spurs.

So 75 mill?

12 months on, we don't sell him to a direct league competitor (yes have to deal with him if we cross Barca in Europe), add 35 mill to the price, and all after watching a season where he nearly led us to the title.

Devastated that he's gone, but credit to Brendan and the owners for holding their nerve last summer. Holding onto him for the extra 12 months has given our club a potential future it would have taken years to get too had we sold to Arsenal

On a player note, can't complain about how he's handled himself, gave his all even when he wanted out, and was honest with the club in enough time during the window for us to spend the money in a considered fashion. Complete opposite to Torres, Luis will always leave fond memories rather than a bad taste like Fernando did.

Wish him all the best, but still :( last season was so much fun the way we played & as some of you have noted we will likely have to change that up somewhat now.

Remy 27 (10 mil, 14 goals) or Bony 25 (19 mil, 17 goals)?

Remy would suit our style of play better as he has pace to burn and can run through the wings simular to what Suarez was doing but ofcourse not as well

Bony is a finisher, this could mean that Sturridge would have to play the Suarez role.

I would like to hear your opinions and your reasoning.

So Utd are on the verge of signing Di Maria (and apparently Vidal too?), Chelsea have signed Fabregas and Costa, Arsenal with Sanchez (maybe Khedira also) meanwhile we've lost Suarez and look to replace him with Bony. Can't help but think it's going to be a lot tougher next season to keep our CL spot unless we sign some quality considering that's what our closest rivals seem to be doing, Bony doesn't strike me as the sort of player that would fit in with how Liverpool played last season.

Remy would suit our style. I watched a few Newcastle games and when he is on he is world class. Great touch and has plenty of tricks in the bag to run at defenders. Wouldn't be a bad addition at the right price.

I have also seen a bit of Bony but not sure if we would be doubling up with lambert-esque player. Not discounting eithers ability to play with the ball at their feet.

Bony's similarity (in stats and history) with Suarez is interesting too. Not suggesting he has the ceiling that Luis has talent wise obviously.

Finally on Luis - I am not sure why but I was way more gutted when fernando left. It makes no sense really but there you have it. Good luck to him and his family in barthelona.

The huge concern with getting Bony is that you're gonna miss a lot of creativity when you're practically replacing suarez with an out and out finisher. Suarez is the best "2nd striker" on the planet, he makes a ridiculous amount of chances for everyone else.

We need a Bergkamp not a Drogba

I'm not sure why people aren't thinking of Lallana as more of an AM, when considering who will replace Suarez? Sterling - Lallana - Coutinho switching positions behind Sturridge is formidable. Lambert is similar to Sturridge, without the same pace, but with better game intelligence and finishing from set pieces. Sure we want depth, and Sturridge has had his injury issues, but Lallana really is very good and at 26 can go straight in.

i.e. Evolution, not revolution.

Don't get sucked in by thinking that every other team's big money purchases are world-class. Why not think Man U, Chelsea or Arsenal are 'doing a Spurs' with their TV money outlay? Sanchez didn't cement a spot at Barca. Costa has to play under Mourinho. Man U still have an old squad. City aren't a team, they're a collection of buy-out clauses. With all the midfield talent on all these teams last season, BR still had our's playing the best.

Oh, and before I type [/optimism], can I just say I heard Luis wanted to save our wages while he was suspended and will be back in Jan.

I liked the evolution v revolution point but I don't follow your last line.
It's pretty optimistic to think that the signings Arsenal and Chelsea are making shouldn't be worried about, but not quite as optimistic as saying Luis will be back at LFC in January after he's had a couple of months to get match-fit again! :) Those 4 months off could be interesting however. If Barca play very well, then he might find himself more sidelined than he would like. If they don't play well, they might be trying to paper up their problems with Luis, who won't be match-fit and may miss the glory days...

Lallana doesn't really have the passing ability to unlock defenses, great worker, has a goal in him, good at running at blokes, but he isn't really gonna put in a splitting throughball. Though he could still surprise me

I would like to see him play third mid with Hendo and Gerrard but he could well play quite a bit out wide, who knows how Rodgers wants to use him

Putting aside the fact that Luis' main role wasn't playing defence-splitting passes either, I think you will still be surprised by Lallana's passing ability. It helps that Lambert and Lallana have a great relationship already, but with the speed of Sturridge and Sterling, Lallana will have more options to show this off with.

Yeah really can't wait to see Lallana link up with Sterling & Coutinho. I think I said a few months back that those 2 were the real driving force behind our superb form in the 2nd half of the season, they were literally untouchable at times, and I can see Lallana with his touch, speed and creativity complementing them perfectly. No doubt we're going to play some joga bonito with those guys on the pitch together.

Would love to see BR buy a world class winger as well as Markovic. Would give us lots of depth in the wings and means Sturridge can play as his preferred striker position. Someone like Di Maria/Reus (both unlikely) or even someone like Griezemann would be fantastic. Means we could have Griezemann-Sturridge-Sterling as our front 3 with Markovic off the bench as well as Lallana being able to play there and hopefully a good backup striker (Remy, Bony etc.) as well as Lambert to come off the bench if needed.

But Suarez does play those passes, almost every game, quite a few times. He is amazing. Don't think Lallana is in that level in terms of passing yet

Anyway let's just buy Kevin Volland, too, that lad could be as good as Sturridge. Actually let's just buy Hoffenheim

Volland and Firmino would be way better than Bony, we would have to change the way we play completely to maximising Bony''s strengths. We cross the ball the least in the league, and you would have to start crossing to Bony's head. We counter attack with pace, Bony is quick enough but not in the first few yards, he takes a bit to get going. Plus he doesn't do as much defensive work as you'd like

He is a very good striker for a setup that suits him but he doesn't suit us

I'm surprised how fondly people are saying farewell to Suarez. The dude made us put up with his transfer rumours every bloody window, we had to put up with his racist shit, and we had to put up with his vampire tendencies every 12 bloody months.

I'm sad he's leaving - for the sole reason that he made our team better. The dude is and always has been a ******* though, for me it is a matter of "wish we hadn't lost you, good bye" rather than an "all the best Luis, we love you"

I said soon after the biting incident, when most people on this thread were calling to sell him, that we would regret selling him. A couple of others agreed with me, but most wanted to sell him. Now everyone is gutted. Well glory be me drunk, what's happened since to make you change your minds? You couldn't realise then what you realise now? I will tell you what has happened since... it is now a reality, he's gone, and suddenly some, who wanted him sold, are gutted. I was gutted when all the talk was about selling him. In the upcoming season when we're 5th or 6th around xmas time, then you're really gonna feel gutted because the reality of his departure will be biting....hard. I said two weeks ago no amount of money is going to replace his quality. I hope I'm wrong, but I know I won't be. 35 goal a season players don't grow on farken trees.
I realise he wanted to go but players talk about leaving all the time, yet most of the time, the big clubs hang on to their stars. Liverpool has problems retaining its best strikers. Owens (don't laugh, Owens was once a gun), Torres, now Saurez. Don't shoot me down, but does LFC have a culture problem? We keep losing quality strikers and I've had a gutful of it. Ronaldo left United, but only after he helped them win 3 league titles and other trophies. Rooney always talks about leaving United, but they hung onto him and he repaid them with trophies. WTF did we do to try and retain Saurez? Not offer him more money that's for sure because our tight ass owners think the club has spent enough. Seriously, if we couldn't hold onto Saurez after missing out on the league by a fraction and with the lure of CL next season, we must have a culture problem at the club. Either that or start releasing the purse strings a bit you freaking tight asses...even better, sell to Arabs, ala City.
Looking forward (not) to the next big name at Liverpool becoming world class, only for a big club to offer him dollars he can't refuse and LFC once again bending over...like a lame, defenseless fa.rk.en sitting duck...like snatching candy from a baby....letting the big club grab him. We must be seen as an international joke by all the big clubs.
And also, so much for the EPL being the top and toughest league in the world. Ronaldo, Messi and now Saurez, all playing in Spain....all wanting to play in Spain...for 2 clubs.
What a shite moment for the LFC.

Owen* and Suarez*. United at the time were no doubt a bigger club than us now. If BR can consolidate a spot in the CL, continue to possibly challenge for the title and have success in Europe, then no doubt players will want to come to us more than now. It's much easier to attract a player to a club that has been playing Champions league for 15 years straight rather than a team who has just made it back into the champions league. Every player in the world would grasp at the chance to play for Real Madrid or Barcelona. If you honestly think we have a culture problem then you seriously don't pay enough attention to the club. The club's culture is one of the best in the world. The fans, stadium, staff, treatment of players is superb, it was just a matter of fact that Suarez wanted to play for one of if not the biggest club in world football, which he thoroughly deserves after his form in the past 2 years in the EPL. Liverpool always knew that Suarez wanted to play for Barca or Real, and it would be just a matter of time before he got there. Just be thankful that FSG didn't sell him last season for 40mil, because holding him for an extra year got us an extra 35mil and a champions league birth.
Oh, and we did absolutely everything in the world to retain him last year, and made him the highest paid player in the EPL to retain him, money wasn't the issue, it was always his dream.

I didn't want to sell Suarez either but we gave him a contract of 200k per week so I don't know how you can argue we didn't offer him enough money. We can't keep upping that every 6 months - we aren't owned by billionaire oligarchs.

Losing players to Real or Barca hardly makes you a joke. There's barely a club in the world who can compete with them when they come knocking, especially for Latin American players who all seem to dream of playing for one of them.

The man has been a fantastic player for Liverpool during his time there, if I was Liverpool supporter I'd be remembering him fondly as well despite his shortcomings. He may be a questionable human being with some serious personal issues, but he tried his heart out for your club on the field and you can't ask for more than that as a supporter.
