I know our CB's are much maligned but could it be that the goalkeeper behind them is just as useless at helping organising them? I don't trust Mignolet one bit, he just doesn't inspire any confidence. If we could concede less then we wouldn't need to rely on scoring at least 2 goals every match.
Mignolet was excellent second half of last season. Ignore the Stoke game, our season had finished by then.

His first half of 13/14 was also quality. I'm pretty happy with him now tbh.

He's a great shot stopper, but he's poor with the ball at his feet and at distribution, and just average at defending crosses.

I would not be averse to an upgrade.

Second half of last season he dealt with crooked & high balls fairly well IMO. Slight question mark with the ball at his feet but has improved there too. Shop stopping is excellent. Can't think of too many keepers available that would be a significant upgrade.

Yeah, would have loved Cech. But he was adamant about staying in London anyway.

Not that I'm against Mignolet, but Cech would have been an upgrade for sure.

An upgrade in goal is something that can be looked at but it's not a weak spot. Migs is very good but we could get better. Right now though we have far more pressing concerns elsewhere in the squad so Mignolet is safe for now. Im happy with him, his last half of the season was very good.

As for formations. What about the old classic 4-2-3-1

------------Mignolet
Clyne--Skrtel--Sakho--Moreno
--------Can---Henderson------
Milner-----Firmino-----Coutino
-----------Sturridge------------

Bogdan, Lovren, Flanagan, Lucas, Lallana, Ibe, Bacca

Squad depth, Toure, Markovic, Allen, Origi, Ings, Enrique, Ilori, Ward.

Bacca and Clyne I have named as names we have been linked to in positions we desperately need. So instead of just putting New RB and new Striker. I have just put names down to pad out the squad. Clyne looks close. No idea on Bacca though.

Pretty crazy that we spent 20M squid on squad depth Markovic.

He is quite a conundrum. Clearly has bags of talent, definitely lacking confidence, possibly lacking the gaffer's faith.

A loan is not out of the question.

Enrique will be shipped out BTW.

Well yeah right now he is squad depth which is bizarre for someone we spunked 20 million on. It's not because he is terrible either. He clearly has a lot of talent. It's just that Lallana, Coutinho and now Firmino are ahead of him in AM positions. Then arguably so is Ibe now. Milner also joining hurts his chances.

Hopefully he plays though, has a large ceiling.

It is interesting that Firmino wasn't leaked at all from our end (ie journalists w sources at Liverpool) until the very last minute, the story came from Brasil. It's not that the English media are clueless, it's likely just that they haven't received any information from their end and therefore have nothing to report.

It wouldn't surprise me if the club was keeping everything very quiet with respect to a few of their more complicated and high profile targets, and not leaking any information until they're almost certain that a player is attainable or almost over the line. Conversely people like Di Marzio are getting most of their information from agents, who obviously don't have the same incentive to keep things quiet.

There's so much money in the game now, quite simply £20m ain't what it used to be. Every club with any aspirations of challenging for trophies will have multiple £20m+ options in each position (and probably with a few key players worth significantly more than that), particularly in the final third where the fees are typically higher.

If true then it's interesting regarding Kovacic. Firmino stuff came out of Brazil first. English media had no idea. There has been a lot of stuff from Italy regarding Kovacic but nothing out of England.

Fingers crossed :)

With firmino in the door, and as discussed a hugely talented markovic still on the books I'm more than happy to get rid of sterling and his shit attitude for 40+mil.
Would be great though is say we signed Kovacic, Bacca and Clyne, didnt sell Sterling. Had a great year, made the CL, then he is happy because we signed great players and we have ambition, then signs a new long term deal.

We all win. :D

But seriously. He is gone.

High ceiling Jod, high. ;)

I don't want to give them too much credit but that rosy situation is a genuine possibility... Sterling is a 20yr old kid with a 35yr old nuffie 'advising' him. FSG are smart money. They know that Sterling's tune will change very quickly when he sees he is no longer as required at the start of next season as he was at the end of last.

For me - FSG get a tick here. There moneyball strategy may not ultimately work but they know where the power is in individual negotiations. Kudos.

I think there will be room for Markovic as I think that Brendan wants to continue playing 3-4-3/3-4-1-2. Obviously that formation will have to change from time to time depending on fitness and opposition but all in all there should be room. Clyne and Moreno would be the first choice wingbacks with Markovic starting from time to time on the right instead.
