Doesn’t matter how many different cups soccer teams can win. Only one cup matters in Aussie rules - the Premiership cup.

Having in season competitions, pre-season competitions and any other type of competition to win a cup that isn’t the Premiership cup is just silly.
And nobody would ever take it seriously.

Winning a plastic cup that nobody cares about isn’t a substitution for winning the Grand Final.
Of course.

But it may give fans of struggling teams a little bit of joy when they win it. The memories of these second class Premierships fade as fans hope their team will eventually win the big one, but they may die before that happens.

And for Fitzroy fans who will never ever see a VFL/AFL Premiership again they look fondly of the replays of the 1978 Night Grand Final and the 1989 Reserves Grand Final, because that’s all they got.

I never seen Richmond win a Night Grand Final but having seen the Tigers win 5 Premierships I’m not so bothered about it or the Reserve Grand Finals we won.

But I liked watching the Night Series cause it was competitive fun games and I always went for the under dog. Liked when Fitzroy, Melbourne, St.Kilda and Sydney holding up the cup because that was a unthinkable sight in those days.

I hate the practice games, and don’t know why they even bother to show them on TV? Either a pre-season comp or just start the season earlier with more rounds…

I'll explain it to you how an equalized competition works dummy.

Once every 19 years you should be the best team
Once every 19 years you should be the 2nd-best team
Once every 19 years you should be the 3rd-best team
Once every 19 years you should be the 4th-best team
Once every 19 years you should be the 5th- best team
Once every 19 years you should be the 6th-best team
Once every 19 years you should be the 7th-best team
Once every 19 years you should be the 8th-best team
Once every 19 years you should be the 9th-best team
Once every 19 years you should be the 10th-best team
Once every 19 years you should be the 11th-best team
Once every 19 years you should be the 12th-best team
Once every 19 years you should be the 13th-best team
Once every 19 years you should be the 14tb-best team
Once every 19 years you should be the 15th-best team
Once every 19 years you should be the 16th-best team
Once every 19 years you should be the 17tb-best team
Once every 19 years you should be the 18th-best team
Once every 19 years you should be the worst team

My God you are dumb.
In a perfect world.

Can you give a example of any point in time in the VFL/AFL that these stats have happened?

And why do you keep insulting people?

Maybe you should have warned in your first post “ please discuss but only if you agree”

As usual I get bored with your threads that gets tedious as you paste and post same comments repeatedly and the consistent belittling of those that goes against you.

I hated your Finals idea but your responses and insults made me stop reading the thread… and eventually in time this one as well.

And I am for a pre-season cup!!!!!

But I also loved the concept of the Foxtel Cup, but the majority clearly didn’t.

And I guess the 75 000 supporters at the Night Grand Finals games are not on BigFooty to defend you. Or they changed their attitudes.

Get with the times and see how people respond here, which is what you originally asked for. Seems this time people were not in your favor. So what? It’s not gonna change a thing. If the AFL thinks it’s financially viable they will bring it back and take it from there.

But the more agitated you become then some posters will feed on this and try to make you more angry then you already are.

Sometimes the best reaction is no reaction.

I've thought the same thing, ie an 18 (or 19) team competition for one premiership is a bridge too far. We had clubs struggling to win a flag when it was a 12 team comp!

I'm not sure a secondary competition is the answer though. I've always liked the idea of two divisions, with a Grand Final in each, likely then a playoff between the two premiers.

We basically have that now. The two 'division' champions are on par with the two prelim finals winners.

The NFL has the AFC and NFC champions and one Super Bowl champion. The NBA has Eastern and Western Conference Finals then NBA Finals. MLB has the American League and the National League, then the World Series. Each setup is different but ultimately there is only one champion. The difference with the NBA is that you play everyone during the regular season. In the NFL and MLB you just play the teams in your conference/league.

If we split the AFL in half and played two 16 game H&A seasons then you could have a division A premier and a division B premier that could play each other to be the overall premier or whatever. But whoever is the overall premier would only ever play against 9 teams in a season. The alternative is you follow the NBA model where everyone plays each other and then the top 8 (10?) is decided based on geography or some other means. There was a 6-4 split of non-Vic to Vic teams in the top 10 last year. Do we want to see a system where Carlton or St Kilda make the finals over Sydney who won more games?

The real difference in the AFL is care. No one cares about making the GF or finishing on top of the ladder. These are just steps on the journey. Geelong should celebrate making another GF. It's tough to do hence they've only done it 4 times in 15 years under Chris Scott despite being in the top 4 most years. But the AFL is Talladega Nights. If you ain't first, you're last. That's the culture.

In my lifetime Hawthorn have been the best team once every 4.333 years.

I'd say the system is working perfectly :p

There is only one cup worth winning and and nothing will change that.
