When you factor in the costs of owning this compound, i.e., taxes and rates, insurance, ongoing maintenance, replacing damaged stuff, cleaning, gardening, pool maintenance, advertising each house as a holiday rental, employing people to help run the holiday rental business, etc., etc. It wouldn't be such a great thing to win in a raffle, IMO.

The interesting trade off, if you were to take the whole compound as the win instead of the cash, is that by owning it all you would effectively have no body corporate. Fantastic, from a cash flow perspective, but then whomever owns the compound is 100% responsible for its maintenance & upkeep.

I don't see the upside in taking the properties myself. At some stage you have to unload them (unless you want to be/are able to be responsible for the upkeep and booking of all of them). It's pretty unlikely you'd be able to flog them all in a short period of time.

I've bought some tickets in the raffle and made it very clear to the wife that in the very unlikely event that we won, we'd be taking the cash in a heartbeat.

The upshot of this article is they don't get taxed on their winnings, but they also receive it in installments over 12 months to prevent them from talking bad about the show in that time. I thought that was interesting.

A previous contestant who appeared on The Block told Yahoo Lifestyle that although their money isn’t taxed, there is a condition put on their funds.

“You don’t get it for 12 months,” they shared. “It’s spread over that period so you don’t talk bad on the show and if so, you don’t get your money.”

2023 runners-up Eliza and Liberty also told the publication that contestants receive their prize money “in instalments.”

From what I've read in the local paper when the contestants arrive to start, they'll have the frames and roofing of the houses done (probably use that Truecore sponsorship again). Then, the contestants will complete the rooms inside as per normal.

Truecore only makes the frames and roof trusses. I think you're thinking of Colorbond, which makes the houses' outside cladding. But I suspect you're right. The houses will be giant boxy-looking McMansions like they usually make on this show in recent years.
