Well I'm sure there are many many people who are campaigning to the church regarding gay rights. Gary is a public figure, and his support for a prejudicial opinion was public. Once again, deserves to be called out for it.
It wasn't exactly hidden that Ablett has for a long time held a strong faith. Seemed to only have people up in arms when he pressed 'like' on a social media post - the more I type that the stupider this whole thing sounds. Screams of outrage culture, guess we just have to ride it and let them get it out of their system. Just a shame that this phenomenon has infiltrated football these days as well.

Strong faith does not necessarily equal homophobia. Its not outrage culture. Outrage culture is changing the little green man on the traffic lights to a little green woman in the name of equality, its not disagreeing with someone saying 'all homosexuals are going to hell'. That is just like being a good person...

Who gets to decide what is boo-worthy though? Stephen Milne was booed quite significantly a few years ago (after being charged with a criminal offense), was that wrong? Would it also be wrong to boo Ablett Snr after he killed that girl?

It's a personal preference and if there isn't the desire amongst the crowd to boo, then it's unlikely to catch on. Though the surefire way to make it widespread is to lecture people on it. Without the fuss keeping it in the news, people will get bored eventually and it'll die off fairly quickly.

We don't have to like them as players, we don't have to like them as people, but how (or whether) that is acted on isn't the AFL or the media's business when it's something as universal and basic as booing.
Yeah I can see your point and it's a valid one. It is hard to define the boundary of booing. If the AFL pursue this then it will be to the detriment of the game.

I guess my point is that booing shouldn't really be about ones choice in life (sex, religion etc). That's basically discrimination. But yeah, even it it is, people will still boo about that stuff and it's extremely hard to police. Comments (e.g. racial) are easier to police than the simple vocalisation of a boo.

That’s fine, those players left the club and deserve some booing for leaving a club. The booing of Goodes had nothing to do with that, who the hell knows why Ablett needs to be booed
There’s acceptable booing? You sure? Don’t get caught in the ban.

Some reasonable points but you’ve contradicted yourself simply by saying that they have the right to their belief but not to share it - in Christianity at least one of the fundamental tenets of the faith is that you are compelled to share the ‘good news’ as it were.
Sorry to break it you mate, but nobody is interested in your preaching of the Lord's word. Just keep it to yourself and people will treat you civilly and they won't roll their eyes & think you're a dumb c***. It's like being a vegan - it's a personal choice - no need to preach or convert or act morally superior to non-believers.

Oh my god

Just when I thought the AFL couldn't get any worse

How about we have a Gary Ablett round and give free entry to everyone who shaves their head bald?

We can have a minute's silence before the game starts while Gill McLachlan gives us a reading of The Lord's Prayer
At half time, the crowd can all hold hands and sing "Onward Christian Soldiers" and "Kumbaye"

Anyone who boos will escorted out of the ground by the AFL Gestapo into waiting vans where they will be transported to the "reprogramming" sheds and subjected to 2 hours of highlights of Ablett, Dangerfield and Selwood staging for free kicks and given electric shocks if they don't applaud & cheer

It's absolutely bizarre that the AFL and football media are defending Ablett.

On one hand they talk constantly about making those in the LGBTI community feel welcome at the football, and on the other defending a player who, lets be honest, agrees with Folau's view.

So why are you on a forum trying to tell others that your opinion is right on this, that and the other subject. Like all of us?

These are some facts.

2008 - Gary Ablett gets booed during Grand Final v Hawks
2009 - 2018 - some other Geelong player gets booed during game (maybe Selwood, Danger, Ablett)
2019 - Gary Ablett gets booed even louder during Round 5 game v Hawks

Why? Can I suggest that Hawthorn supporters think it's ok to boo good players.

Ignore the stuff about some media post or like. I attended the game and the Hawthorn supporters I sat with were (rightly) embarrassed.

Let's call it for what it is. A large number of Hawks supporters think its ok to 'boo'.

If that's what the HFC is about that's ok, just don't try and make it about something that it's not. The 'post' is a red herring.

God you talk like a twat.

How would it be a fitting end to the career of a more clean, skilful, and more decorated player than literally 99.99 per cent of players to ever lace up a boot?

1) He's a flopper and dives for free kicks/umpires pet/protected species
2) He's nothing but a cheap 1-2 chip scab stat peddler
3) His selfish "all about me" attitude
4) Being the worst captain of an AFL club in history...... Joel Selwood is a close second to that by the way ;)
Getting in teammates faces and telling them to block for him, not leading by example.
5) Creating the worst culture at a football club. He's supposed to be a captain and set the standards (both on the ground and off)
6) Signing a deal with the Gold Coast, then conveniently when the richest part of the deal had been completed he had no interested in finishing the rest off
7) Sprouting his religion
8) Showing his true homophobic colours

If anything the events of the past week should see him get booed louder :)

The prosecution rests!

I agree that the consistent booing of an individual is generally in poor taste, it should be proportional to their 'crime', and in most cases like this, it's not.

But it's not the AFL's place either, this needs to play out in its own way, even if that way is someone else in the crowd saying "pipe down, you flog" (which happens for plenty of other things) to anyone around them that tries starting it.
