The game was decided prior to the match. Where Mick Malthouse and Brett Ratten faced off in a battle of spoons.

Mick was winning, took the early lead, gave Ratts a thumping, first smashing him with the 1976 Wooden Spoon, and then when Ratts thought the punishment would end, Mickey brings out the 99 spoon. Oh you should have seen Ratts holler and cry, begging for mercy, close to quitting like Carlton always does, but then suddenly, as all hope seemed lost, Ratts brings out his trump card, he smacks Mick with the 2002 spoon, and then straight after BANG! BIFF! KAPOW! Ratts imitates Darth Maul with a double ended wooden spoon with 05 and 06 on the ends. Mick was comprehensively beaten. Mick surrendered, said 'Tanks for the match' and then well... you know the rest.
