How about we get Dean Solomon back to Essendon next year?
Reasons:
Am I crazy? Cross.
- We need some hard bodies in the side to teach and protect the kids coming through. Solly can crash and bash through the middle when we are light on. Tick.
- His form and running ability last year was pretty good. Tick.
- He's someone who deserves life membership of the club by playing 10 years. Tick.
- He looks to have got his body right to play a more running game and not KPP as what Sheeds was trying to do. Tick.
- We might get him real cheap (psd?) as Freo will look to rebuild and offload a lot of players. Tick.
- He's 29 and should have 2 good years left. Cross. Will hold up a younger player from getting a game, if Peverill gets delisted why then would you turn around and pick up another 29 year old with a lack of leg speed. Yes I would pick up Cuz, but Soli is no Cuz.
Could this be really happening?![]()

DO IT
I'd be fairly confident Solly's defensive days are over.
Forward's his business these days.
Wasn't most of his good work for Freo running off HB?
I agree - pass.
With this being the last draft before GC get involved - we have to make every post a winner and have every available slot open for a young kid to take his shot.
GC get involved in 2010.
In the 2009 NAB AFL Draft it will have the capacity to sign a dozen 17-year-olds born in January-April 1992.
At the end of 2010, Gold Coast will also be able to pre-list 10 players who had previously nominated for the AFL Draft, or were previously listed with an AFL club, and will be permitted to sign up to 16 uncontracted players.
maybe freo would bundle solomon up in a deal with kepler as well. he could teach ryder, daniher and CJ everything he knows about being a key position defender.
seriously, solomon was a good servant of the club, but he represents a lot of what has been wrong with essendon for the last 5 years. unskillful and undisciplined. i think our kids will develop fine without him and don't see what he has to offer our club.
He doesn't seem to be getting much wiser from where I'm sitting. Every pick is a chance to get a good player who'll be there for 8 or 10 years. Solomon will not be, full stop; and his value as a player is IMHO debatable. We will overdose on 'kids' if we are not careful
You have to remember that most don't make it anyway.
Reading the posts in this thread I am surprised at the repetition of this 'kids' call. I think you have to remember that there will be another 5 'kids' this year regardless and some fair agers exiting.
Anyhow, Kelvins post wasn't selling anything other than an opportunity to add to our list cheaply ONE, that would be expending just one pick [which is possibly worthless anyhow] for a hardened, half wisened footballer.
If that was solly I think it has merit. But i think it will be harder to get him away from the surf than freo over there. The peaks in Bendigo might seem more like troughs
And yet I deliberately played down his broader intellect. I did not, however, discount that on field smarts are a different kind of mental quotient. One that we do have and been shown to lack.He doesn't seem to be getting much wiser from where I'm sitting
In referencing Kelvin's op, I made direct reference to it's supposition status [see the 'if that were Solly" in my post above] and also that we do have scope for a mature recycled player of his type.for a hardened, half wisened footballer.
My point was that we have plenty of room to expend a pick in an experimental capacity and was offering criticism for the thread's repetetive drive for kids.there will be another 5 'kids' this year regardless and some fair agers exiting
And i certainly do disagree. 'Every pick', particularly at the later end of the draft, is more likely to cost us spots for two years and tie us up in the interim. What you advocate presents some opportunity costs Slattery.Every pick is a chance to get a good player who'll be there for 8 or 10 years.
