Just wondering how many of you ex Fitzroy fans actually follow the Brisbane Lions.

It's a tough call, but if I was a Fitzroy fan I dont think I could follow the Brisbane Lions. They play in a different state and have virtually no resemblence at all to Fitzroy, you may as well still call them the Bears. To me it looked like they took a couple of your players, took your mascot and spat the rest out.

It's pretty sad, really.

Actually Brisbane took quite a lot of the Fitzroy culture on. Element by element, there is probably more reference to Fitzroy than there is to the old Brisbane Bears.

The question that Roys fans generally ask themselves is not whether Brisbane does MUCH for Roys fans, but whether they do ENOUGH. From experience, it seems that most supporters have judged the option on its merits. Some folk have deemed that its worth a shot, others believe its better to go elsewhere. This changes from fan to fan, depending on their own personal levels of attachment in the different in the elements.

I posted a poll here not long ago, basically asking which of the elements was most important. This included elements such as colours, name, all those sorts of things. Most reponses made mention that it doesn't quite cut it to categorise in this way, the decision-making process is more intangible.

Another thread talked about what percentage of Roys fans now follow Brisbane. Once again, it was subjective. Some folk looked at the 50% mark, but that was far from conclusive.

On top of this, many Roys fans chose not to actively follow the Brissy Lions, but DO at least have a passing interest.

I don't follow the Brisbane side, but I DO respect any Roys fan who does ... its their choice.

Well said Mobbenfuhrer.

BPP - I am a member of the Brisbane Lions, and I'm also a current Fitzroy member. I've been to a few Fitzroy Reds matches this season, as well as the Lions matches in Melbourne.

Neither is the same as supporting the Roys, pre-96, but we just have to make the best of what we've got - and people make their own decisions in this, as to what suits them best, and what they feel accustomed to.

I don't think there are any particular 'categories' that Fitzroy people could be put into - apart from the one which wants to see Fitzroy continue, or to continue to be recognised in some manner/form. I reckon that'd be most of us (even if we have different opinions on how it should be done)!

CARN THE ROYS!!!

Big Poppa Pump I disagree with you.

As Mobbenfuhrer said, there probably is more reference to Fitzroy than the Bears. First of all the team is CALLED the Lions, second there is a LION on the jumper and third the song we all like to hear after the game goes to the tune of Fitzroy's old song (They are also mentioned in the song too).

Yes there may be only one Fitzroy guy still in the team (two with M. Pike) but Brad Boyd had a career ending injury, Jarrod Molloy wanted to go home to Melbourne while Mal Michael has always wanted to play for Brisbane, and I can't remember what happened to the other ones.

I remember in the footy record a while back they had asked a few players what it felt like to play the first game for their new club. One of the guys was Martin Pike and he said something like it didn't feel too much different because he'd played with Fitzroy quite a while.

Obviously he sees some of Fitzroy in the Brisbane Lions!

I never said Mal Michael played for Fitzroy I was just mentioning the trade with Michael & Molloy.

Molloy wanted to go back to Melbourne while Mal Michael grew up in Brisbane and has always wanted to play for them.

I guess the question you should be asking yourself Big Poppa Pump (as a Melbourne supporter....correct?) is whether you would have followed the 'Melbourne Hawks' had they come into existance. If you answer 'yes', 'probably' or even 'maybe', or 'possibly', then you would probably have some inkling why some Roy supporters now follow a club that has so many echoes of Fitzroy in it. The recent FFC Team of Our Century Dinner is a case in point.

ex fitzroy with the Brisbane Lions

No one mentioned Jonathon Brown who the bris lions got under the father son rule and is going to be a superstar.

Anyone got any news about Brad Boyd a rumour up here in Qld that he was going to play in the QAFL this season but havent seen his name anywhere

Most of the proceeds went to the 'Fitzroy-Brisbane Past Players Association', as they are known now. Apologies, Mobbenfuhrer for being pedantic. ;)

Ok, I've finished my silent treatment of you, now, Roylion. Now that I've put you in your place, I consider it ok to admit that yes, you would be correct.

Let this be a lesson to everybody else, before any of you consider proving me wrong about anything. ;)

Think you may find that Brad Boyd is no longer is QLD......

from memory he went back to Victoria for a business venture.....

End of 2000 I think that was.....

And just on that past players association thingy.......they only ever hold functions in Melbourne......NEVER in Brisbane......

I don't follow any AFL team at the moment. It's interesting that some Melbourne teams have started playing home games interstate. I'd like to see Brisbane play two "home" games each year at Princes Park. I'd also like to see the club's name changed to Brisbane-Fitzroy. If they do both those things they'll have my support.

I'd have to presume that as the years roll on, and more of Brisbane Bears and Brisbane Lions plays head into retirement, then more of the focus will be placed on the Brisbane end of it.

Currently, the Fitzroy end of things have many more years worth of past players to draw upon than do the Brisbane end.

Time will even it up.

Well the official name of the Brisbane Lions is the "Brisbane Bears-Fitzroy Australian Football Club". They just trade as the 'Brisbane Lions', in the same way as the 'Footscray Football Club' now trade as the 'Western Bulldogs'. But yes it would be good to see the name Fitzroy up on AFL scoreboards again.

Considering that some regional clubs take on an acronymatic attitude towards merger-engendered nomenclature extent, how about doing the same with the Brisbane Lions

SMW Rovers - Streatham-Mininera-Westmere
TGP - Tempy-Goruya-Patchewollock
DWWW - Devon-Welshpool-Won Wron-Woodside
FLBB - Flamin' Legendary Brunswickstreet Brisbanites

What do you reckon about that for a go? I reckon its a good go. What do you reckon about that for a go?

BWCMB (They're the Mallee Bulls, from reports)

Actually they're recorded as the Bichip-Watchem FC, which is a pain for lil' old Corack (East?). The Corack name disappeared when the Panthers merged with the Swans.

The cricket up there is the same. Carron merged with Litchfield, then Carron-Litchfield merged with Watchem. Presume they still have that team. I grew about 25 clicks from that area!

Brad Boyd

the last i heard Brad Boyd was still in QLD and had a wine business not sure if he is still here or not .Was on Tv here last year on the local 7.What a waste of talent he was if not injured would have been a super star.

Teams such as Devon/Welshpool/Wron Wron/Woodside are much better that teams with generic name such as Ararat Eagles (Trinity/Caledonians/Miners, and a few others I can't remember), Shepparton United (Shepparton East (mark one) and S.P.C.F.C) and Echuca United (Echuca East and Echuca South)
