Correct. I'll just point out a few in my lifetime that are hilarious.
Gav Wanganeen > Carey in 1993. Palease.
Rob Harvey instead of Carey in 1998 was shameful.
Shane Crawford over Carey in 1999 was just as ridiculous.

Yep, Wanganeen deserved it. Obviously. He deserved his Port stuff, he was great. But to suggest he was better than Carey (or Ablett) in 1993 is absurd.
Carey was a 21 year Captain who had his team on top until the disaster that was Brisbane away that year.
True. Ablett was beyond that year. Wanganeen > Ablett in 1993 is even worse!

Would you prefer a system where the clubs submit their top 3-5 B&F nominations to the umpires who then can only select their votes from those nominated?
Certainly get a greater diversity of voting than we currently get. If you win by 10 goals and you nominate 2 forwards, a ruck, a mid and a defender, then you won’t get 3 mids picking up 3-2-1.

If it was re-named 'The Umpires Award' then we'd not have any controversy. Because that's what it is - it just happens to be called 'The Brownlow'. So we can't take voting off the umpires...otherwise it's a different award, to which we already have loads of those... (media, coaches, players etc...).
It has prestige because for decades no other award existed....this was the only individual player award (beyond &F's).
So take it for what it is. An award voted on by umpires who really have no idea who played well and impacted the game. It has very little credibility, and never has. Geoff Raines was favourite one year and didn't get a vote. Keith Greig won 2 of them. Priddis won. Libba won. Cooney won. KB, Carey, Dunstall, GAS, Buddy, Matthews, Whitten, Bont .....have none.
It has less credibility than ever as media saturation of the game ensure Nick Daicos receives votes for just showing up. As does Cripps. They can butcher the ball and do nothing of value, but because they got lots of disposals and the umpires have been told how good they are they get 3 votes.

The Brownlow lost its credibility years ago when it decided to only award votes to midfielders.
That the greatest players to ever play the game like Ablett Snr, Matthews, Carey etc never won the games highest honour just shows what a joke the award has always been.
