It is my view that the cheque-book war of the early 80's was that which started the spiral into cultural mediocrity, not the removal of Hafey 7 - 8 years earlier. This absurd obsession with throwing huge amounts of money at very ordinary players very nearly put us down the gurgler.
While we have had period since where we have regained the financial equilibrium, we have not been able to break the large money/ordinary players hoodoo.
At least GM is making some inroads in this area.
GM does appear to be a modern day GR of a fashion. He does appear on the right track as a football adminstrator, doing all the right things to rebuild our team.
Nonetheless, we must be wary of history. Like GR sending us into a spiral, do not forget that GM didn't leave the Kangaroos in a blaze of glory.
GM must only be limited to football admin and leave the CEO/non-football stuff to someone else.
