The Butters Cup: Changes vs Port in Ballarat

Watching Davidson and Freijah tear it up on the wing made me realise just how much I overrated VDM. Davidson's averaging more disposals(17.7) and score involvements(6.7) than VDM has had in any of his 6 seasons with us.

VDM was terrible last night with 6 disposals, 3 of which were turnovers. Dolan was even worse with just 3 disposals, 2 of them clangers.

Out: VDM, Dolan
In: Poulter, Arty

I'd give Arty a run on the wing, he can't be worse than 3 disposals/2 clangers..
You’re surely taking the piss here right?

Arty can’t find the ball at vfl level let alone AFL he literally had a game where he didn’t get a single touch

No I am not joking...

I don't think we've played him on the wing at AFL level? He's only played small forward which is probably the hardest position to play on the ground. And it's a position which you definitely cannot judge simply by possessions like you have.

Look at West, he only had 7 disposals last night but had a big impact on the game. Mostly through his pressure, his 6 tackles were the most on the ground.

It looks like Bevo is trying him out on the wing in todays VFL game and it's only half-time but he's been decent so far. If he finishes strong I don't see why we shouldn't give him a shot in that wing/high half forward position AFL level. Dolan is clearly a ways off it IMO. A few weeks in the VFL to develop more won't do any harm.

He was on the wing in round two.

Tried hard but couldn’t find the footy.

Arty has played wing at AFL and VFL level a lot and struggles to find the pill

Fair enough. My thinking is we can't possibly get worse than Dolan's 3 disposal 2 of which were clangers. He needs some more development time in the VFL so why not try out Arty or someone on the wing. Could try Mcneil or Gallagher there too. Anyone but Baker basically who I think will never be AFL level.
I put Baker in the same basket as Gowers, Hannan, Mccomb, etc who for whatever reason Bevo tried too hard to make happen thus wasting precious AFL game time that could of been used to develop a youngster with actual potential.

At least Arty has some potential X factor and leg speed, whether he will ever become AFL level is still a question though. But I'd rather find out now so we can move him on if he isn't.

We’ve found out he’s not good enough,

Dolans pressure ratings which are a better stat to use for a small forward are fantastic

Alright Arty we get it mate. Keep plugging away in the 2s.

Which pressure stats are you looking at exactly? Because Dolan's only made 2 tackles inside 50 for the whole season. 1 against the Kangas in rd1 and 1 against pies in rd2. He hasn't made a single tackle inside 50 in our last 5 games. Whilst Westy has made 7 in that same 5 game stretch. West has also made almost 3 times as many 1%'s as Dolan too.
Even just looking at tackles, Dolan has 8 for the year compared to Westy's 24.

I just think Dolan is a ways off AFL level and I think in the VFL he will get more of the ball and more gametime to develop.

Arty and Poulter would most likely offer you more than Dolan and Hynes right now. Although Arty has had a couple of very low possession games too...

There's positives to investing games in them now. Might pay off down the line this season. But it feels like we're using the injuries as a good reason to sneak some games into them ahead of schedule (which is quite sensible), Dolan has had a couple of moments but the two of them are definitely being carried.

Not sure I would bring one or both to Darwin in a couple of weeks - those games are slogs.

I would imagine the plan will be to insert Arty, or Poulter, or whoever at some point while we give the kids a spell, even if just for a couple of weeks.

this may just naturally happen anyway depending on injury luck and who has to make way for who.

Treloar looking fit

If we need to hold him back for a week I'm okay with that too

I don’t think having Treloar play in the usual artic windy conditions in Ballarat is good for someone coming back from hamstring problems, the warmer conditions up in Darwin the following week would be better to break him back into the game

Meh if he's ready he's ready imo.

Poulter sure you could make an argument Arty had 8 disposals last week in the 2s

Vandeemeer makes too many silly mistakes. He dropped that sitter of an intercept mark early in the game that cost us a goal. Stuffs many things up

His only saving grace was he tackled well as the game went on, and had a few pressure impacts which was good

I think he is at the cross roads.

Buku needs to impact the game more or he might be in trouble and left behind

I wonder if Bevo will play Treloar on the wing when he comes back because our midfield is humming along so nicely you wouldn't want to upset the momentum they have.

And so are Williams and Davidson on the wings

Treloar doesn’t have the capacity to play wing

West kicked 3 goals which is why his 7 touches were effective. But nobody's putting West in our best 5-8 players on the day (while he still had a good game), even with 3 goals, reflective of his only 4 touches otherwise.

Jones has agility and is a decent user of the pill but across about 15 matches equivalent of 75% TOG he averages less than 9 touches. That's enough of a sample size to prove that, despite all his traits, he just doesn't find himself winning enough of the ball to be of value.

It's not a mile different from the fact that a lot of us like Gallagher's traits as a footballer but kicks have a knack of getting smothered way too much over a large enough sample size that he also finds his way out of the team.

In any case if we need to find a wing player Davidson and Williams played less on the wing vs. GWS than they have for most of the other games this season, we can easily get them back playing wing and find other players to fill in the roles at key defence or at high-half forward (like bringing in the tall Jones again to play back, or even Gardner in a pinch, or bringing in Poulter or McNeil in the forward unit to Davidson)
