Well the Morton's are family friends of my parents. I feel i should stand up for him when he can't.

You talk as if Morton is giving up his time for free to play football for Melbourne.

He is a professional sportsman and is played a large amount of money to play at a high standard. He deserves all the scrutiny he gets, especially since he has been so abysmal this season.

I reckon we get rid of him. We may not get much for him, but at least we might get a bag of peanuts. Enron shareholders would've preferred a bag of peanuts rather than losing the lot on their investments.

I didn't think he played that badly tonight.

The only significant critisism was some fumbles but almost everyone did tonight.

Happy with him tonight. Keep him in foir the rest of the year. Let him develop, even if there are bumps

Gee I thought he was easily our worst. I reckon he only hit one Target by foot which was to Ricky who had twenty metres on his opponent. The rest of his possessions were either cheapies or kicks that were turned over. To me he just seems so down on himself. How long will they persist with him? His supporters will say he has enough of an upside but I haven't really seen it this year..

Would be better if used on a wing. More freedom to use his long kicking. Macdonald can take his role in defence.

Gee, that's someone who has been forgotten about!

Agreed - I thought he was shocking tonight. There was one good handball in the last quarter and other than that, plenty of kicks into the open that were mopped up by Port.

I can't imagine that Alistair Clarkson is losing sleep over him.

Some cheap points.
  • I suspect he is being over-coached at the moment.
  • I can handle outside players, but a Steven Stretch he ain't.
  • Surely we are entitled to ask when, if ever, a Number 4 Draft Choice will come good.
  • His brothers are duds - and irrefutably so. A breeder would arrive at a certain conclusion . . . . .

Yes, but he went in hard when required. No doubt he us down in confidence

And? Glenn Molloy could go in hard when required and it didn't get him anywhere. Your defense of Morton is admirable but you are basically defending the undefendable.

The way I see it, it's a journey with Cale. I gave him a lot of shit after the Tiger and Dogs games, but now as an MFC supporter, I see a player who's had his confidence killed but has obvious talent. It's going to be baby steps, starting with him putting his body on the line. When he does this, he'll earn the respect of the coach, team and supporters and we'll see his confidence up abd his skills up.

Give him a spell at Casey, make him earn his way back into the side.

I'll be interested to see how some of our players go for Casey this afternoon. There is a spot there if they want it.

In Davey; Out Morton?

That seems logical.

Morton needs to be told (if he hasn't already) that he is part of our future plans but needs to gain some confidence in the VFL.

I thought Morton was no worse than Watts, for example. If Jones hadn't booted in that goal in the first 5 than he would have been worst by a mile.

Davey can earn his spot back

After watching Morton go around last night, I have reached the conclusion that he is ahead of his time, a pioneer of sorts. In the past, players have been rewarded for "Hard Running", but Cale has come up with the concept of "Soft Running". It's like hard running in that it involves working up and down the ground. Cale did this well last night - he was generally near the contest. But therein lies the difference - he was near the contest, not at it.
Far too often, he was 10 metres away from the hard work, creating an option perhaps, guarding dangerous space, waiting for the release. Only if he had no other option would he actually approach the contest and try to influence it.

GO GET THE BALL, CALE. DON'T ALWAYS WAIT FOR IT TO BE DELIVERED TO YOU ON A SILVER PLATTER. PUT YOUR HEAD OVER IT.

Soft Running. It's gonna be a thing.

Anyway, Cale either needs a well-defined role in the team, or a spell at Casey. Fair enough if the FD wants to give him the rest of the year in the team to show something, but GIVE HIM SOMETHING TO DO. Don't let him just piss-fart around the half back line.

Morton was definitely worse than Watts.

At least Watts attacked the contest.

Morton has a future with us, but the AFL is not the right forum for him to work on his deficiencies.

Cale Morton is useless:

The "Spud" Morton will get murdered by the Hawks forwards if he is selected.

In fact , why is he in the side???

We are playing one short with this spud.

Get him the hell out of the club.

Confirmed: CM was absolute James Hird last night. Barely hit a target or took a clean possession all night against the probable wooden spooner. VFL at minimum; MFC should strongly consider a trade if they can get anything for him.

Given he was one of our best players in his first and second years, I think we'll be able to get something for him :/

Simple answer to your first point, don't play him back.

Has he ever spent a whole game forward? Even a half?

I still have faith that Cale is highly talented but down on confidence as many others have mentioned. To me he looks lost with no definitive role. He could go back to Casey, dominate with 45 possessions and 5 goals per game and still lose confidence from the current wishy-washy use of him. I reckon he's improved in the 'hardness' department and with the right role still hold out hope that he can become a damaging player - for us and not against us.

note - I don't think he'll ever bulk up either. He looks like a Dustin Fletcher body type to me so he can still become strong but will always be skinny.

Davey has played 150+ games and won a B&F, he has earned his spot many times over, straight back in please.

Considering he probably was going to get dropped before he got injured, he needs a couple of games @ Casey first

I'll say it again, we gain nothing from letting him go while low on confidence.

His value is diminished for one.

He has a close knit group of mates at the club, he has struggled to put on sufficient weight and is still growing.

He will come good IMO, has a great set of skills which haven't been showcased this year.

Good to see he's got a set of something then.

This. Watched the replay yesterday and couldn't but help to keep an eye on him. Horrible. Everything he touched turned to shizen. Almost every kick resulted in a turnover.

Having said all that, I'd love Cale to become the player we hoped he would. But his confidence, unsurprisingly, is just terrible at the moment. Give him a spell at Casey, get him on the steaks and protein shakes for next year. Pity steroids are illegal though - could give him the mongrel he needs as well as the size.

Morton had more score involvements for Port than the Dees on Saturday night.
