After watching Morton go around last night, I have reached the conclusion that he is ahead of his time, a pioneer of sorts. In the past, players have been rewarded for "Hard Running", but Cale has come up with the concept of "Soft Running". It's like hard running in that it involves working up and down the ground. Cale did this well last night - he was generally near the contest. But therein lies the difference - he was near the contest, not at it.
Far too often, he was 10 metres away from the hard work, creating an option perhaps, guarding dangerous space, waiting for the release. Only if he had no other option would he actually approach the contest and try to influence it.

GO GET THE BALL, CALE. DON'T ALWAYS WAIT FOR IT TO BE DELIVERED TO YOU ON A SILVER PLATTER. PUT YOUR HEAD OVER IT.

Soft Running. It's gonna be a thing.

Anyway, Cale either needs a well-defined role in the team, or a spell at Casey. Fair enough if the FD wants to give him the rest of the year in the team to show something, but GIVE HIM SOMETHING TO DO. Don't let him just piss-fart around the half back line.

Dane Swan already pioneered that mate.

Cale's an outside player, and for a lot of people around here, you're either a tough-as-nails inside player, a KPP, or GTFO. Aaron Davey and Cale Morton both cop it because they don't tend to win their own ball.

Cale has been poor the year. He has a few excuses, and in any other year I'd be just as outraged at the calls to get rid of him, but this is not any other year, this is GWS year, as we're quite aware thank you very much, and we might just be able to get a good deal for him. If we can't get at the very least a high 2nd rounder for him then I'd like to keep him, but if we can, we should definately consider it. He's skilled and has enormous potential but he has major attitude and confidence problems, and needs to put on weight. All of these issues can be fixed during pre season.

I dont mind outside players at all - although I admit my favourites are guys like Moloney and Trengove.

But Davey is super damaging with the ball and requires a tag. Morton is outside but just doesnt hurt the opposition at all.. I still think his trade value is too low at the moment so we should give him another chance next year.

Cale Morton showed so much promise in his first 2 seasons. I thought he'd be twice the player Cotchin is. Desperately needs to find some confidence and a permanent position to play imo. I recall him scoring three goals playing forward in 09 so that could be an option.

Seriously have no idea where he's at though.

How can you say Cale has attitude problems? Have you actually met the guy?

I too have been disappointed with his play, but it doesn't make much sense to me to move him on at this stage. Only way I would give up on a #4 pick at 21 years of age would be if I thought his trade value could plummet in a couple of years.

I'm assuming that if Melbourne, a bottom to middle third side doesn't regard him as a required player then his trade currency would be terrible.

If another club were to suffer a brain melt and give us what we got for TJ or Brock then sure, but I doubt it (maybe a club like GWS would be prepared to go above the modest market value). Otherwise, to deal him for a second or third round pick doesn't do it for me. Surely at that stage it's more unlikely getting something out of one of those picks than a former top pick who has showed a bit in his rookie in sophomore seasons.

Surely won't cost much to retain, and at 21 not nearly old enough to give up on at this stage in my opinion. Whether he should be playing at AFL level right now is another discussion entirely.

Melbourne FC obviously has big wraps on him for whatever reason. They're making sure he gets games into his legs.

That's why he's not going back to Casey, because on his recent displays he wouldn't even get a game for the Casey Reserves!!!

No heart, no urgency, no skills.

Morton had more score involvements for Port than the Dees on Saturday night.

At least he was involved in something... ;)

MFC Player Review from Port game read:
Cale Morton: Cale did some good things, and must continue to focus on positives. He fumbled a little bit, but must continue to back himself and work on the basics of the game.

That's not all that flattering, but it's a long way from what I saw!! I missed it but he must have had an awesome run through the banner. But then that's only one thing, what could the other have been? Doubt it could have been the team song.

They can hardly say:
Cale was as useful as a truckload of dead rats in a tampon factory. He butchered everything that came his way, all that he touched turned to shite and his confidence seems shot to pieces.

... can they? It's the official website. The fact he's been dropped says what they really think about where he's at.

He was the only real struggler for mine, a few guys didn't seem to cope with the heat very well & weren't at their best, but he was the one guy who stood out as playing below par & has rightly been dropped after consistent performance at that level.

Not sure what to think about him for now or the future, only that I'd sigh a big mother Effing sigh of relief if GWS signed him right about..... NOW.

From what I've seen he doesn't cope with the cold either!

He's finally been dropped and it should have happened weeks ago, but I can see it now. Dees get beaten by a good team and CM is straight back in. God I hope not on 2 fronts (Dees beat Hawks- genuine chance, and CM doesn't play for MFC again this year).
Happy for him to go away and harden the f@#k up for the next 6 months and prove his worth. If he's not prepared to do that then.... later princess!

The Adventures of Cale Morton at Melbourne lives on for Season 5!

That and the fact that he's doing a stupid MFC dance for the Footy Show or Grand Final breakfast.

If he does go to GWS, we should make sure the compensation somehow accounts for Scully too.
