Cameron Rayner is an AFL footballer for the Brisbane Brions football 'club'. He is 18 years old and was taken with Pick 1 in the 2017 National Draft. This means he was rated the best junior footballer in all of Australia for the year 2017. Best out of everyone. Every single junior. This guy is the creme de la creme.

Now, don't get me wrong, I don't know young Raygun personally. He seems like a good bloke. Whatever. My question is:

Are YOU FITTER than Cam Rayner? Can you beat the Number 1 Draft Pick in one of the key indicator's used before the draft?

This thread aims to solve that question. Indeed, I'd like to know whether a bunch of bitter, largely useless, gone-to-seed internet warriors are in actual fact, fitter than the Number 1 Draft Pick.

No chance I hear you say. Never. I mean look at the kid. He's a freak. He's the best. He's had 12 possessions (total) in his first two games of AFL and spent less than 75% TOG -- he's an absolute MONSTER!!

Here me out here though.

As you may remember, young Raygun and a few other flogs did a private 2km time trial just prior to the draft, as they'd missed the main combine testing.

Now I have the results here somewhere... ah yes.

Raygun ran a 7:57.

Flogs of the Bay. Are you fitter than number 1 draft pick Cam Raygun?

THE CHALLENGE:

- Find you local athletics track. This is the most effective way to run the exact distance without hinderance, with no doubt similar testing conditions to those imposed on young Raygun and Co.
- Run 2km as fast as you can. That's 5 laps. No cheating. Run fast!
- Time your run on your watch (Garmin, Polar, Fitbit, whatever) and post a photo of your time in this thread. Extra validation points for posting a picture of the time/date screen as well.
- Enter Valhalla.

Now go run.
And you never know, old Fagan lips might draft you, too.

All results will be polled and analysed as part of this extensive study. Findings will be released in due course.

Also, I myself am making every effort to participate. I am, however, a Vet of many long, hard fought (Bay) wars. My arthritic bones and decaying body are not long for this world. But I pledge I will do my best to fall from this wheelchair one day soon, onto the local aths track, and give Raygun a run for his money. That's if I don't die in my sleep in the meantime.

Not sure about Rayner's, but if you post the results from Fatty McCartin's 2km time trial, I reckon I could beat that.

Thing is with Paddy's times, there's no median to go from, there's too much variance, as the speed he travels is directly proportionate to what's at the end of the time trial. For example:
A pie with sauce. Fast.
Billy Brownless' daughter. Fast with stiffy.
A pre-season. Really not so fast.

How awesome is this - if you type "fatty mccartin" into Google Images the Photoshop I did of him is the second image that pops up. Also works if you type in "paddy mccartin fat" but then its 9th on the list. :drunk::rainbow:

This is very mean. I hope you enjoy your Google Image tab fame.

7:57.

That's the magic number people.

That's what you gotta beat.

I have two bung knees and have put on a few kgs so cant do it now but I beat that time 2 years ago at local footy preseason session and then washed it down with a dart and a beer.

Cam Rayner is a shit truck

4 minute kms is more long distance than short distance pace.

TBH that's actually embarrassing. At a similar age we'd run 3.2 kms at the same pace after completing a series of other fitness tests (push ups, chins, sit ups, etc).

This morning I ran 5 kms in 22.40 with a backpack and having to stop for lights :$

But can you prove it?

Seriously tempted to have a rest day next week then the following get down to the local oval, get five laps in and photo of the stopwatch.

Bear in mind I'm a 40 year old and nowhere near the elite environment with the resources and support staff budding stars have access to.

Oh tell me about it. I'll soon be 39, have fought in 19 bloody wars and my modest 'training' routine is nothing in comparison to what the country's best and brightest stars must have prepared for them. It's like comparing apples to donuts. Guys like Rayner are incubated to perform at an elite level from an early age...

Dear Quixote

You campaigner

I write from my hospital bed. I woke here 15 minutes ago. Last I remember I was charging around Landy Field Athletic track in Geelong in response to your bold challenge. I think I got 15 metres in from a blistering start before everything went black. I do remember my lungs being on fire and my chest feeling like 1000 knives had been plunged into it, but that’s about it.

From now on I’m sticking to slagging off shit footballers from my keyboard

Get ****ed

Your only mistake was, you stopped charging. A valiant effort no doubt.

So far though, it seems like the 6 possession per game Raygun has everyone covered with his blistering 7:57. With the exception of perhaps Mofra if the cops get too close.

Sad.
