The Captaincy Thread....

I'd do this...

Captain: Goodes
VCs: Kizza, ROK
DVCs: Eski, Shaw, CBolt
Remaining leadership group (from): McVeigh, Jude, Tadhg, Braddy, Mummy, Hanners

I would like to think that in the next couple of years guys like Jack, Hanneberry and Kennedy will be vying for the role, but for the time being it has to be Goodes. I wouldn't mind someone like Malceski being vice, would like ROK to focus on his fitness and form, though a vice isn't too much strain.

I am not a fan of the three captains policy, and am confused as to how Kirk can be chosen as captain of the year when arguably he is not captain, not in the true sense, and it doesn't say much for the others (even though he was deserving of recognition of course). But why would you need 3 captains if he is that good? We have the best captain in the AFL and he has to share the role. Odd.

I am not sure I am a fan of the leadership group concept either but only those within the clubs know how succesfull it is - whatever works, works.

I'll have a crack:

Captain: Adam Goodes
Vice Captains: Kieran Jack and Ryan O'Keefe
Leadership Group: Tadgh Kennelly, Shane Mumford, Rhyce Shaw, Nick Malceski, Craig Bolton and Jude Bolton and Jarryd McVeigh

Is our leadership group really that big??

I thought it was only like 7 people. Having a 10 or 12 man leadership group is pretty pointless IMO and having 2 deputy vice captain AS WELL AS 2 vice captain is just as pointless.

Fck me ... you forgot a team chaplain, a treasurer, the women's auxiliary, the secretary, a stenographer to take notes in team meetings, and don't forget they'll ALL need deputies?!??!!!!

This is a heckin'g football team, not the next Labor ministry.

Pick a captain and a vice-captain. We've got an army of heckin'g assistant coaches and team management, how many heckin'g "leaders" do we need???

One captain, and one bloke to cover for him if he's hurt.

no need for an 'official' leadership group everyone knows who the leaders are at a club it picks it self, if players have to be told who the leaders are they probably shouldnt be in the leadership group anyway..

think that makes sense...

I think Goodes is the obvious candidate, but what effect do you think captaincy would have on him?

I think his involvement in games has been variable the last couple of years, though his efforts have been greatest when it really matters. Would captaincy be a great motivation for him?

On one hand I think being captian may motivate Goodes to be the great leader by example he has the potential to be. On the other hand I think his recent inconsistency makes him less suitable for the job.

I'm sure the team knows who motivates them, and I'm sure the club will respect their opinions.

He already is a captain and has been fine with it.

I realise that, but I just can't imagine him being sole captain would hurt his performance at all.

whats that got to do with anything?

Yawn. The same reason Paul Roos has been actively signing NSWelshmen from other clubs for the past five years.

I don't see how sole captaincy could really have a bad effect on Goodes. It's made Jobe Watson a better player, and Goodes is more experienced and more senior. It would inspire him if anything.

My only concern with Goodes as sole captain is his tendency to sook and remonstrate with umpires and team mates when things aren't going well.

Don't get me wrong.. I think he's really improved in this area and you don't see it anywhere near as often anymore but it's a risk. You don't want the younger players following that kind of example.

Traded in Henry Playfair and Ben McGlynn. Traded out Schneider. Hardly indicitive of a large scale NSW-driven recruiting policy.

For what its worth, trading Schneider was a mistake. At the time I didn't even know he was a NSWmen.

But then there are drafts like Paul Bevan, Craig Bird, and Kieran Jack that were made under Paul Roos. Unless you think 6/17 Senior New South Welshmen in one club is a coincedence and has nothing to do with a coach seeking local players.

John Longmire is also a NSWmen. Represented NSW in the under 18's I believe.

You don't think the fact that the Swans have exclusive access to any NSW players that don't get drafted, nor the fact that NSW Scholarship players will generally be cheaper for us (given we are in the same state, so logistics are a lot easier), nor the fact that we actually see these players a lot more by virtue of being in the same state, would have anything to do with that?

Paul Bevan - NSW rookie.
Kieran Jack - would have been a NSW rookie, but due to an admin error, couldn't be, and we had to take him live (technically he wasn't eligible at all, but no other clubs were interested, so they were cool with him being made eligible late)
Craig Bird - NSW Scholarship player

I think everyone forgets the reason of have a tri Captian setup.
Im all for it for a reason, it splits responability of the job and doesnt pressure the captian to allow there football to suffer.

Culture.

And damn, I'm fed up hearing about this NSWman crap.
It wont happen, never will. Bookmark it.
Our best players are all Victorians for a reason, maybe it will change in 5yrs and the players from NSW will all be around the same level as VIC players. But at the moment, no.

Winning Brownlows and AA selections doesnt make a Captain.
Though Goodes does provide the proper markings of a Captain, we shall see.

Better still - dont give it to him and we will pick him up next year when he's pissed off. ;)

Jack is also a target for GWS :thumbsu:
