It's not a debate. It was one person's concern, subtly expressed.

Expressing such a concern doesn't remove support.
This begins said segue.

My original post - the one which is no longer there - stated more or less my opinion on this, and where I stand as far as the notion of the expression of concern is at play here.

The reason why your post was deleted has already been explained. As has the reasoning behind it, which you accepted.

Not sure why you're bringing it up again. It's not necessary.

There's not much point going around in circles here though. We can agree to disagree. There were no rule breaches there, not was it mean spirited, so arbitrarily deleting it without a majority call to do so, is not a moderate thing to do.

I mean, your views have been taken into account. I understand them. We are just not going to take any further action at this point, and the poster obviously isn't interested in engaging on it, so it kind of stops here.

Cheers

Because I was advised to bring things up another way, and I was met with essentially the same thing.
I kind of feel like the continuing discussion highlights it more than that post ever did.
This is a mite unfair.

Do you want me to defend my point of view or not? Do you want me to explain why I find what I found objectable or not?

I agree to let things go here, but this is largely due to the fact that you - not they - have decided that they won't go any further.

IMO, it's a prick of a thing to do when the bloke's recovering from chemo.
Are you ok?

What exactly is "a prick of a thing to do"?

I may be hopeful that Doch gets back and to his best, but I am not confident. And if he doesn't, that's ok because there are more important things in life than football.

My concern for Doch is for his cancer to go into remission and never come back. Playing football is gravy.

My comment was intended purely in a list analysis perspective. I said I'm not confident he'll get back. This doesn't mean I am not hopeful.

Hell of a reach to find any ill intent into my original post.

Can we discuss whether a player will play again if they have recurring injuries? What about if they step away due to mental illness?

Cancer is something that is out of anyone's control.

Discussing contingency plans for a player not continuing their career is in no way a slight on them.

I don't want you to defend your point of view. You're entitled to feel however you want to. However, for the sake of not derailing a thread on something that has no resolution, you are being asked to move on.

Random question for those with better memories then me - We were so dominate in 1995 - why couldn't we make a dynasty out of this team?

straight sets exits in the '94 + '96 finals and missed finals altogether in '97 ... what happened in those years? why did it all jell together in '95 but not those years (leaving '93 out of the equation. my 8 yr old self is still crying)

Older team. Madden, Kernahan and Williams were retired 2 years later.

Parkin empowered the senior core to do what they thought was best. The players basically coached themselves that year. Definitely a player driven flag.

I contend we should have won 3 in a row (93 to 95) and with a bit of injury luck pinched 96 (I think we were 10 wins 2 losses at round 12).

By 97 we had squeezed the Lemon dry, how Parkin rebuilt it for a shot at 99 flag was genius.

95 we were an old team. Madden, Greg Williams, Spalding, Sticks, Bradley etc were past their peak but due to stuffing up 94 when we should have won the flag were so fired up to make up for it that an extraordinary season of dominance was the result in 1995.
96 those guys in general were going on probably a year too long. Or more accurately, too many of our veterans continue to play on when a few retiring with that flag was probably the better thing for our list. But you are a long time retired so I can always forgive players that go on a year too long. But the club itself with list management should have been more shrewd.
I think early 96 we still had some of that momentum of 95 playing out but the older guys essentially probably found another full season too much collectively.
Other teams hungrier and younger like North were ripe for a flag. We really should have won 94 and 95 flags.
1993 we stuffed up tactically on grand final day and outsmarted by Neale Daniher in Dons coaching box even though he was not head coach, he made their midfielders know exactly how our ruck to mids routine went and taught their mids where to be at virtually every centre bounce roving to Justin...
But overall in 1993 it was anyones flags. We were not even in finals in 92, so to get to grand final was probably a little unexpected and sides like North and Cats were probably better teams but missed making it.

1997 and 1998 we were rebuilding with Whitnall as the key forward and young Hamill still learning the ropes from memory and trying to develop a new ruck division. 1999 was crazy to make grand final from sixth spot. We were flogged by Lions in week one of finals at Gabba by 12 goals.
By 2000 though we actually were a genuine contender but injuries ruined our campaign in last few home and away round and first couple of finals.
After that, the rest is history in terms of list management and salary cap disaster after disaster for rest of that decade.

94 will always be the one that got away in my view. The best team that year was West Coast, and we thumped them at PP late in the season. That was point I thought we were good enough to win it. Instead, we lost the last H&A and then two final to massively inferior opposition. Completely fell off a cliff. WC were good that year, but at a minimum we should have been in there with them on the final day.

Agree, I'll add 4 in row 79-82. We finished 2nd and went out in straight sets in 1980. Then went back to back in 81 82. Parkin always says that group was the posted talented he has ever coached.

I've always felt our 1995 success had 2 main contributing factors, the embarrassing straight sets exit from the finals in 1994, including a loss to an understrength Geelong, & the embarrassing losses to Sydney & St Kilda in consecutive games in 1995, with the accompanying pile-on from the media questioning our premiership credentials.

The further we got beyond 1995, the more our failure to start taking the draft seriously hurt us.

Magnificent. It brought a tear to my ear thinking about Betts sitting there and listening to it for the first time.

Two questions.
First, will the mods allow me to create a new thread entitled “ Who wants Sam Maclure to support another AFL team?”.

Secondly, if I can do that what % of Carlton supporters on Bigfooty would say yes?

I just listened to him yet again on 3AW Sportsday. He managed to p*** off Richo no end. His constant claim that pretty boy Bailey Smith is better than Sam Walsh not only displays bad judgment - as Richo pointed out, with a strong note of irritation in his voice, Walsh is in the All Australian team whereas Bailey isn’t - but MacLure is like one of those overly enthusiastic adolescents who are really painful and annoying.

I’d be happy if he defected to the Bulldogs or Collingwood because he never hesitates to make, mostly glib, negative comments about Carlton.

Ignore him, everybody else does.

Maclure falls into the old trap of trying to appear impartial, so he pushes too hard in the other direction.

Like the kid in school who teases and throws things at the girl he secretly likes.
Ohhhhhh!
So that's what that meant.
