Isn't this kinda the issue from many on this board/the broader supporter base re gauging performances from LOB and Plowman - the good stuff isn't appreciated?

This is an interesting comment. I think you could argue well for both sides to be fair.

On one hand, he's classier than LOB is on that footage, but you can't blind turn like that in modern footy. Tackling is a more necessary part of the game, and you're just not getting the space and the time he has in that footage these days. You put LOB back then, and he'd look a hell of a lot better.

There were also no goals by him in that vision. That means he must not have kicked any goals!!!!

That footage went for 10 minutes. There were under three tackles laid. In ten minutes of footage of AFL games. Not 3 tackles laid by Houlihan. Under. Three. Tackles. Period.

The AFL was different when Houlihan played, and one of the ways that difference bore out is in the amount of tackles per game. Houlihan had more space, got more separation.

It's a good article, I enjoyed it. Since the time we picked him up, he has been one that I really hoped would excel. Maybe because he is a country lad or maybe it is his canon left peg. Add his elite ability to cover the ground and it really would be a tragedy if he did not make it. Just love to see how Voss has impacted so positively on so many of our player's. Career best form is being shown by quite a few, including Fish, TDK, Charlie, Durds, Saad, Cottrell and a few others. Sensational to see.

Be great if every training session they do the first 30 mins on non preferred side for both hand and foot. Premiership sides seem to have players that can get out of trouble more

His kicking can be elite but does do some dumb shit, like out of bounds on the full as you say. I find his kicking of 2 steps is elite - when he kicks on instinct. when under pressure he can be bad and too much time to think about it he can be bad.

This reminds me of a line from Top Gun. "Don't think, just do it." Something like that. When LOB has not got the time to think he usually delivers perfectly. However, when he has time and space he worries too much that he could stuff it up. With more games under Voss in this good side, his self-confidence should slowly improve.

Biggest difference between Ryan and Lochie - Ryan very good burst speed, allowing him to get clear and hit up an opponent under little pressure.

Lochie is all slow twitch fibres. He's got the acceleration of a freight train. I don't think he lacks courage or is scared, he just lacks power in his legs to impact in a one on one. Opponents close in too quickly and he's under pressure. Once he's going he's pretty speed but he really needs to work on his acceleration over the first 10 metres.

The other big difference is speed of mind and footy smarts. Hoops was always a step ahead and knew exactly what he was going to do well before time.

It’s like on one hand Hoops had a super computer chip in his mind, refreshing millions of algorithms every millisecond whereas LOB is sitting there with a piece of a paper, a pencil and protractor trying work things out one step at a time.

A perfect example was LOBs attempted shot at kick goal in qtr 1 which was smothered. By the time he kicked the ball the Syd player could have just about headed the ball away.

but if you put a highlights package of LOB together that play wouldnt be in it and he would seem a better player......the good old highlights package

in the 2 mins i watched of the 10mins video, there was a clanger kick to a richmond player (after a nice pickup), a kick out of bounds on the full (after a nice pickup) and about 40 seconds of commentators saying he is a good player after both the beautiful rove and kick to hickmott and a piece of play in Freo (thats in 2mins of his highlights)

almost as if the person who made the video loves one handed pickups and not the kicks ....(they're probably on here so my apologies if i offend)

Running the wing, sometimes a long kick into the 50 is needed. And it gives our talls and smalls a decent chance. Sometimes it doesn't pay off.

I think it is more the kicks he continually does without looking for fear of body contact to be honest.

I only watched a couple of minutes of it - plunkett, mccormick, sporn etc

also found it funny that highlights include some nice clean pickups followed by a really shit kick or they stay on the vision because a commentator is giving him praise (as if that makes him a better player)

Yeah there were some really really good kicks in there (most to a perfect lead from Fev) but what struck me most was possibly his ability to grip the football regardless of what his arms were doing (and I felt they were doing a lot)

At one point he was able to spin 720 degrees to evade a tackler!

Careful, I tried to make this exact point and was stiffly rebuked and accused of making things up.

I think his consistency has improved since coming back into the side this time round. I can only recall one bad shank and it was this weekend, unless I'm mistaken. But traditionally I think exactly the same - his kicking looked great until suddenly he nearly misses his boot and kicks it 15m oob.

Touch wood he seems to have worked through that bit now. He's turning me but I'm not a full blown beLoBer yet, need to see it for a more sustained period before I'm convinced he's through it but he's certainly on the path now.

I think folks can get overly nostalgic around here sometimes. I grew up in Thomastown, used to go to the Marcou's fish 'n' chip shop often. Alex played footy with my brother. So I followed his career really closely. Loved him as a player, don't get me wrong, but I can always remember thinking that he just wasn't quite at the level of the rest of the mosquito fleet. He had some great games, and certainly played his part, but he wasn't a stellar footballer.

I said last year about O'Brien how good his last month of footy was. He's going pretty well. His offensive game has come up to standard and his defensive game is beginning to grow.

Considering one has played most of his footy in a decent team and the other a really poor side with the covid years they are pretty much even. Very similar trajectory.

O'Brien is going to become a pretty good winger when he nails the defensive aspects (halving contests, pressure acts, tackling, one on one defending) of the game consistently which he is getting there with.
