All right… a question I should know the answer to, but don’t.
I actually just watched (for the first time) the final round game in 1987 between Carlton and North Melbourne. Growing up in Hobart, there would have been highlights on The Winners, but that would have been about it.
Anyway, part of the way through the final quarter, the comment was made that the attendance was 30,033. By the end of the game, it feels like there are a lot more people than that in the ground. Was there a system in those days, a bit like the cricket, where after a certain time in the game fans were let in for free?
