Brains trust, do you think we are looking at a Jagga replacement ie. agile mid or a KPD to bolster our defences?
I'd hope we at least look at Dom Brew or Brayden Crossley, both of which would offer depth in areas of need

DGB is an option too, but given we opted to select a small forward ahead of him I'm not sure how far down the pecking order he would be. Must be behind Weiters, Haynes, Silvagni, McGovern and Kemp (I know, forward, but could fill a need down back too) and Young. In which case, why bother?

It's probably going to be a tough ask as we didn't trial a midfielder in the pre-season but I would prefer a mid over anything else with the Smith injury.

Just looking at our list and we have Cripps, Hewett, Walsh, Cerra, Lord and B.Camporeale as pure on ballers. 4-5 will play most weeks if available so I think bringing in another as depth would be prudent.

People hoping to replace Jagga with an SSP signing...

How many midfielders are out there that would get games in the Carlton midfield AND offer a point of difference (speed) and not already on an AFL list?

will all clubs have a talk with the AFL about the short pre season
One answer is addressing the soft cap to ensure the best staff and facilities are available to manage players

Pre season is an issue but, I’m not sure how big. You can’t compare to past eras and trot out the old “we did more in my day” ala Cornes, the game is almost a completely different sport!

If the pre season is longer, do we get more injuries due to fatigue? If it’s shorter are their preparation issues? Are players over managed to the point that there is very little point of difference from individuals? Remember the likes of Kink just bashing and crashing!

Not sure if anyone has the one right answer, just applying the best pathway with the universal rules, soft cap will help here

I must admit I’ve never seen so many injuries in the pre season across the league ever.

I am fairly certain it relates considerably to the AFLPA negotiated time off across off season.

Gone are the days of clubs starting slow with fitness work and skills. They are straight in to it from day one after 4-6 weeks off after the season, then get three weeks over the Christmas/Nee Year party period. Having a stop/start access, clubs are demanding players present “ready” to go straight in to serious competitive work. They try to cram more in to a preseason despite having circa three weeks less time overall to prepare and a party period hiatus where players have significantly varied application to fitness requirements.

We have been guilty of not tapering our loads as the practice matches play out. Last year we did not “taper” until the round 2 bye. I mostly subscribe to the pure, dumb luck theory, however it would be ludicrous to suggest that loads do not contribute to injuries.

Let’s not overlook the slow start to 2024 by the premiers. Was it form, or were they less “screwed down” physically early, building to the business end.

I wonder how much control the new fitness team has of our loads? Do they decide, or are the forced to try to meet the wishes of the coaches preparation schedule?
